Free as in beer

So... BrewDog, a Scotland-based "hipster brewery" - for want of a better phrase - have just "open-sourced" their entire recipe collection. You can read more at https://www.brewdog.com/lowdown/blog/diy-dog. It's not entirely clear what "licence" they're using but they say: *"copy them, tear them to pieces, bastardise them, adapt them, but most of all, enjoy them. They are well travelled but with plenty of miles still left on the clock. Just remember to share your brews, and share your results. Sharing is caring."* I guess "free as in beer" has a slightly different meaning now! Collating/editing information about the benefits of open knowledge

Hi all WMUK would like to provide better materials aimed at the general public which explain the benefits of open knowledge. I have already been signposted to some existing resources (provided by other organisations) but if you know of any really good materials on this, please let me know. Also, if anyone would like to take on the task of writing a short, simple guide to open knowledge from a Wikimedia perspective, please let me know! This will go on our website but will also be a document that we can email to people as necessary. Commons image request help

Hi all, Sorry if this is something I really ought to know :/ Is there a standard form of words - either from OTRS wiki or that you have used - that is helpful when you are contacting organisations or individuals to ask for image donations? Context: I would like to contact artists to ask if they have image shots they would be prepared to donate to commons to support creation of articles about them. Problem: I need to be able to say a) What the benefit of donating the image is to them and to us b) what the consequences of CC-BY-SA donation are in terms of that images use for a non expert. Also it would help if anyone can share the easiest process for managing uploading when you don't hold the copyright but the image donor does (but they are a non-expert/non editor) Thank you! Kat

Global Art & Feminism events, Trainers requested! Last call.

Hello all, As you may or may not be aware, the Art & Feminism initiative is running a series of editathons at art institutions around the world <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/ArtAndFeminism>. We've had numerous requests (most at quite short notice), to assist in running events around the UK. WMUK staff will be supporting in person, but really we need at least one volunteer lead trainer for each (or some kind of superman trainer who could cover a couple if needed). So if anyone is free on one or more of the dates above, we're happy to cover travel expenses etc. Regarding times, the weekend events would be morning/afternoon. I have yet to determine the times for the Dulwich Picture Gallery one. The content will vary between institution, though most will be referring to the existing redlink lists created (or not created) here <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/ArtAndFeminism/Tasks>. Having spoken to the curators and academics who are leading on these events, I've asked them to research the areas they see as needing more coverage on Wikipedia, and to try and find verifiable sources to support these. Additionally, you will see on the list, there is the Women of the World Festival <http://wow.southbankcentre.co.uk/> at the Southbank Centre, who have asked us to be involved and run an editathon. We haven't been able to pin down the day of that with the organisers, but it would be dictated somewhat by when a trainer could be available, so let us know if there's a date that could work for you. Finding articles without photographs near your current location.

I've just been introduced to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Nearby which lists articles near your current location and from the thumbnail it is fairly obvious whether it has an image or not. Has anyone tried using this in outreach to photographers? WereSpielchequers

Old Bailey plaque: image wanted

Working away this morning, I came across Bushel's Case, which established in 1670 that a judge can't really lock up a jury without food and drink indefinitely to get the required verdict from them. Quite a lot hangs on that. (NB some sources say Edward Bushel(l) was the jury foreman, which is not the case, per the ODNB.) What would be nice would be a photo of the plaque in the Old Bailey, commemorating William Penn and his "partner in crime" William Mead, who were in the dock in the relevant case. http://www.duhaime.org/LawMuseum/LawArticle-1335/1670-The-Jury-Earns-Its-In… has a photo, not usable on Commons as such I think without some further ado. The plaque said to date from the rebuilding of the Old Bailey (https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=4n4qvZo9QxsC&pg=PA170 <https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=4n4qvZo9QxsC&pg=PA170> ) which puts it at about 1907; and if it is flat then it would be OK to reuse the online images out there. There is a mention in the The Journal of American History around 1910. There are other Old Bailey plaques on Commons. If anyone could oblige with a photo of this one, I think it would be worthwhile. I don't know how easy it would be to photograph afresh, though. The Open Plaques page http://openplaques.org/plaques/10523 has no image. This page http://www.britannia.com/hiddenlondon/penn_oldbailey.html says it is in the entrance lobby (good); but that the lobby is closed to the public, cameras not allowed (not so good). Charles
