What Volunteer Equipment should we buy?

Hello all, Just a reminder that Wiki Loves Monuments is around the corner, andn coincidently we are looking for input on volunteer equipment. (Specifically photography and AV equipment) Here is a list of current equipment we have: https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Equipment_Loan_Procedure#Multimedia We’d ideally strive for some kind of balance between quality and quantity, but are not averse to a big ticket item if it will facilitate a specific piece of work. But ideas suggested to me by volunteers and other Wikimedians so far have been: More lapel microphones (to record panel events etc) Shoulder rig Video light box. Filters. Extra batteries and memory cards. A bigger telephoto lens A handy audio recorder A camera drone A selfie stick We have a budget of £1000. If as part of the suggestions, people could also look at prices and possible good value vendors, that would be helpful too. Wikipedia editathon for Samhuinn: Gaelic Festival for the Dead 31st Oct-1st Nov. <http://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/wir/2016/10/03/wikipedia-editathon-for-samhuinn…> Come join us as we set a place for the dead; through helping to create new biography articles and improving existing articles on Wikipedia as part of a day of celebration. On Halloween, Monday 31st October 2016 & continuing on 1st November 2016, the University’s Information Services<http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/information-services> team are running an edit-a-thon in two magnificent venues to celebrate the lives of those sadly passed on to mark Samhuinn: the Gaelic Festival for the Dead! The event page is located at bit.ly/WikiHalloween Samhuinn<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samhain> is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. Traditionally, it is celebrated from the very beginning of one Celtic day to its end, or in the modern calendar, from sunset on 31 October to sunset on 1 November. Samhuinn was seen as a liminal<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liminal> time, when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld could more easily be crossed. This meant the Aos Sí, the ‘spirits’ or ‘fairies’, could more easily come into our world. Offerings of food and drink were left outside for them. The souls of the dead were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality. Each day will have different guest speakers discussing the traditions of Samhuinn, Celtic history & folklore and the importance of remembering the dead on this day. Feel free to suggest notable lives & articles we’ve overlooked & should be creating too. Bring your best spookily carved turnip along and win a prize. We will have tablet skulls to munch on and guest speakers telling us about Celtic customs, beliefs & folklore. Hopefully, we may even be visited by the Faerie Porters<https://beltane.org/category/faerie-porters/> too….. Working together with liaison librarians, archivists & academic colleagues we will provide training on how to edit and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles covering areas which could stand to be improved in order to improve Wikipedia’s representation of notable lives; be they connected to the university, to Edinburgh, to Scotland or further afield. 6 people attended and we had an interesting couple of hours. But we only got one person actually signing up on meta. I am looking for some expertise, guidance, and ultimately someone to create the page in its entirety. Is this something you can help with? I would like to get the ball rolling with this fairly soon. Hi all, I have just spotted an announcement of a historic photograph digitisation project by the friends of the Somerset Life Museum Research Group (see https://somersetrurallifemuseum.org.uk/2016/10/13/digitisation-project/ ) aiming to digitise 15,000 images. I have made an initial contact asking about licencing and sharing and mentioned “mass uploads” but I know very little about this. I believe there have been some people who have done this for/with other GLAMS and/or developed tools to handle this. Who would be the best person to put them in touch with if they come back to me and they are willing to release under a suitable licence? Rod

Proposals for APG funding from the Wikimedia Foundation are open for community review

Dear all As some of you may be aware, the closing date for proposals for the next round of Annual Plan Grant funding from the Wikimedia Foundation was 1st October. Proposals are now open for community review until the end of this month, after which they will be assessed by support staff for the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC), then considered by the FDC itself, which makes recommendations for funding to the Wikimedia Foundation Board. Museums in Wikidata

I noticed earlier today that most of the museums in Birmingham were not showing on this query (they are now!): https://query.wikidata.org/#%23defaultView%3AMap%0ASELECT%20DISTINCT%20%3Fi… This was because they were not shown in Wikidata as a museum (or subclass thereof); some were simply marked as "manor house", "factory", "water mill", etc. Or it was because they had no "located in the administrative territorial entity"(P131) property. Dear all As many of you know, Richard Symonds left Wikimedia UK at the end of August. After some consideration of how to replace Richard, we have decided to create two new roles; a part time Finance Assistant and a new *Membership, Fundraising and Operations Assistant*, for which applications are now open. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with a high level of organisational skills and experience of providing administrative support within a not-for-profit setting. An understanding of membership organisations is desirable, as is experience of supporting fundraising activities. The closing date for applications is midnight on *Monday 31st October 2016*.
