Hi all,
I think I would have agreed with Fae, were it not for the fact that there
is no charge to attend this event. In fact I have contacted Stevie as
regards attending on behalf of WMUK (even though I doubt I have the sort
of charisma that Ed has suggested would be useful). As I now have an over
60s free travel card, there are no implications as regards travel costs.
So bearing in mind the zero impact on the Charities finances, I hope no
one regards my attendance as problematic?
all the best

Following on last year's announcement of a national Open Education
declaration for Welsh Higher Education, some good news from Scotland.
The Open Scotland group acknowledge that changing practice is the real goal
and the declaration is just a starting point, but it's a significant step.
Wikimedia UK are mentioned by name.

Dear all,
(Apologies for cross posting.)
In order to coincide with Open Education Week last week the Open Scotland
initiative released a public draft of the Scottish Open Education
Declaration http://declaration.openscot.net/ Open Scotland is a a
voluntary cross sector initiative led by Cetis, SQA, Jisc RSC Scotland and
the ALT Scotland SIG, which aims to raise awareness of open education,
encourage the sharing of OER, and promote the development of open policy
and practice.
One of the primary deliverables we agreed to produce following the Open
Scotland Summit (
http://openscot.wordpress.com/2013/10/09/open-scotland-report-and-actions/)
held
in Edinburgh last year, was a declaration supporting open education in
Scotland based on the UNESCO Paris OER Declaration. There was general
agreement that the Paris Declaration was a "good thing" however
many participants felt it was too focused on OER and that a Scottish
declaration should encompass open education more widely. The result is
the Scottish Open Education Declaration, a draft statement adapted from the
Paris OER Declaration.
The first draft of the Scottish Open Education Declaration has been shared
online using the CommentPress application to enable all members of the
community to add comments and feedback. We invite all those with an
interest in open education to comment on and contribute to this draft and
to encourage their colleagues to join the debate

Many thanks.

The sharing economy is the talk of the town.
There's certainly been a global shift in the business paradigm towards a
new mode of collaborative commerce, followed closely and supported by
Central Government.
There is much the London Legacy Development Corporation can learn from
these models to redefine an approach to regeneration in and around Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park. But what could the sharing economy bring to
established charities or businesses? And what could this landscape look
like a decade from now?
In your role as innovators, business, thought leaders and
practitioners, LLDC and Echo [link] would like to invite you to
an opportunity to explore and harness the growth and potential that can be
unlocked through the sharing economy - for our industries, and for the
communities we sit within.
The conversation starts with lunch on 29th April at 12 noon and continues
from 5.30 with a drinks reception.

Hi everyone,
As a chapter we have run the Wikimedian in Residence (WIR) programme since
May 2012, when Andrew Gray started his residency at the British Library.
We have now agreed to reflect on the programme's successes and challenges
through a review. The WIR programme has been seen as one of the key ways we
can engage with external organisations, extending our scale of activities
and outreach. These residencies are often a considerable investment for
WMUK (£2-8K) and need to deliver a meaningful impact.
We would like to see what the UK community thinks of the programme so far -
you are now invited to take part in the
survey<https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MKMJCVR>that will form the first
part of the review. Your answers will be an
important element of influencing the future of the programme.
If you are not based in the UK, you are still welcome to comment - we are
very interested in what our community thinks of the programme.
The deadline for responding is *24 March. *
Thank you!

I was puzzled by the statement that Wikimedia UK supports a Bill of
Rights for the "world wide web" in what otherwise appeared to be an
opinion piece published on the Wikimedia UK blog.
<https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2014/03/on-a-bill-of-rights-for-the-world-wid…>
The charity is able to use its funds for political lobbying in
relation to human rights, however I am unaware of any consensus by the
members or a published resolution that relates to this. In practice I
don't know of a draft Bill of Rights by Wikimedia to refer to. Should
there be one?
If the blog post was intended to be an editorial or personal opinion
piece rather than a statement of the official position or plans of the
charity, it might be less confusing if the blog post was amended to
make that clear.

Before I go through the survey, I would like to be able to compare the
original planned/proposed outcomes for each WIR funded over the last
year or so with the final reported outcomes. Is there a summary or
list of reports and agreements I can refer to? As I understand it,
this was a contract condition of funding in the standard UK WIR
chapter agreement.
Unfortunately, although I am quite aware of these projects, I have not
followed them in detail and so don't automatically know where to find
the reports on the UK wiki.

Hi all,
I can confirm that no Wikimedia UK equipment has gone missing. All of
Wikimedia UK's laptops and cameras are either currently with the office, or
based in Wales as part of the 'Living Paths!' project. The Wikimedia UK
office has also never received any complaint about personal properties
being stolen as a result of attending a Wikimedia UK organised event. Were
such a complaint to be received, it will be treated seriously and we will
assist the police in any investigation they may conduct.
Whether we are talking about a community organised event such as the London
Meetup, or a Wikimedia UK organised event, I would encourage participants
to exercise care for their belongings just as they would anywhere else.
The office operates an internal record of the chapter's volunteer equipment
both for tracking who has what and for how long, but also to enable us
produce appropriate reporting for the Board of Trustees and FDC.
Regards,
Katie

Dear all,
I pass on the following message:
---
Hi All,
We're seeing a sudden and unexpected ramp up in load on the Wiki and Blog
in the last week or so (nearly doubled over this time in February, I
think!). Which is causing a bit of slow down.
We have a mitigation plan which looks like this:
* Tonight upgrade the server to be much more beefy
* Over the next week work on an aggressive schedule to migrate the
databases to the new DB instance
* Assess whether we can then downgrade the server a little once it is free
of MySQL
This does mean some downtime tonight during the upgrade (say, 15 minutes).
And potentially a little more downtime over the next week as I move things
around.

assistance.

Hi all,
Firstly I would note that the item on Jimmy's talk page is from an account
with a one-off edit, that its language is inuendo and gossip with
potentially a significantly bad impact on the person being fingered.
I think this is trolling.
However, the term "Wiki-related events" could refer to the London Wiki
meetups, or events organised by Wikimedia UK. Also, there is a specific
allegation that WMUK procedures are so lax that there are no adequate
records concerning WMUK equipment. The vague nature of the slur offers a
number of interpretations, including that the allegedly missing property
belongs to WMUK, and that WMUK is implicated in not taking appropriate
action.
Mike Peel's comment that "Apparently WMUK's not missing any equipment..."
is useful, but I feel WMUK needs to issue official confirmation,
specifically addressing:
a) Whether any WMUK property has gone missing
b) Whether any complaint about missing property has arisen from any WMUK
organised event
c) If either the above situations have arisen, how it is being handled
d) Clarifying that the London Meetups are a community-organised event held
in a public place at which participants are encouraged to exercise the
same level of care for their personal belongings as they would in any
other public venue.
I feel we need to nip this in the bud.
all the best
