I wanted to announce the creation of a new mailing list for Scottish Wikimedians. This is part of an attempt to bring together existing Scottish Wikimedians and encourage new contributors to participate in what we hope will be an increasingly active Wikimedia community in Scotland.
With the WiR-ship at the National Library of Scotland, and the possibility of more WiRs at other organisations in Scotland, there should be many more events and much more activity throughout the country, and we're hoping that this mailing list will lead to even more growth.
Everyone is welcome to subscribe at http://lists.wikimedia.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/scotwiki, and please share with anyone you know who might be interested, or post on relevant talk pages!
Cheers,
Ally

Hi all,
One thing that Wikimedia UK's technology committee (which I am on) has
discussed a couple of times is the idea of a blog "planet" [1]
(aggregator) for use by UK Wikimedians.
Regular Wikimedians will know that there's already an English-language
planet at http://en.planet.wikimedia.org , automatically collating
blog posts from around the web that are both about Wikimedia (or
similar projects, eg. FOSS in general).
The idea with a "UK" planet would be the collation of blog posts from
(British?) Wikimedians' blogs, with a strong focus on activities
in/around/involving the UK. The hypothesised criteria for inclusion
would limit posts to those in English, Scots, both forms of Gaelic,
Welsh, and the many other languages of the UK. I envisage that, at its
best, it could be a great place to follow as diverse set of events as
wikimeetups, chapter activity, GLAM initiatives--not to mention
everything else that is (and has been) going on.
These are things that are already being blogged about, but many of
these blog posts (I venture) are on individuals' own (under-read)
blogs. By collating blog posts, they are easier to find and hence each
blog post reaches a much wider audience.
Blog planets are not difficult to setup, and would not particularly
resource intensive; it's just a question of whether people would
appreciate such a thing.
Any thoughts?

practice one would use a newer fork, as the WMF-hosted planet does.
Hello everyone,
I've just encountered a Wikipedia essay from a user called Antandrus. It's
from 2006/7 or so initially but much of it still holds true.
It may be familiar to you but thought you might like it, too -

Thanks and regards,

Dear all,
We need to do a couple of batch extracts from Wikimedia Commons including a
copy of the "Wiki takes Chester" photos. Is there anyone who could do this
for us or show us how?
The extract would be expected to fit on a memory stick, and we would supply
the memory stick. Needless to say the extract needs to comply with reuse
policy<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedi…>so
some metadata will also need extraction.

Hi all
Bit short notice, but if anyone is around on Friday afternoon and fancies
meeting Sara Frank Bistow to talk OER & Wikipedia I'll be meeting her at
around 3pm. We'll either meet around the office (/pop in if anyone in the
office wants to say hi?) or around Bloomsbury I think.
Sara is an OER Research Hub Fellow and has been visiting the OU on that
fellowship for the last week or two. She is also involved with the
Wikipedia:CommunicateOER project which is aimed at improving the quality of
OER related articles on Wikipedia and the WikiSOO (Wikipedia School of Open)
course on editing Wikipedia. Some links:

As I'm emailing around, on a related note I went to a University of London
seminar on OER and Open Access in Distance Education yesterday, which was
(understandably) very focussed on the UoL distance program rather than more
generally (so no mention of some of the great Wiki initiatives), some v.
brief thoughts on the session blogged here:

All,
Take a look at the following email: there are a series of free OpenData
Ordance Survey masterclasses happening around the country. Something rather
interesting for those who like maps!

We are offering you the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of open
data and the tools and techniques to use open datasets, through a series of
*free masterclasses*, hosted by Ordnance
Survey<http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/>and supported by Horizon
Digital Economy Research <http://www.horizon.ac.uk/Home>. The
masterclasses are ideal for those of you new to working with location data
or anyone wishing to brush up on their skills. They are a great
opportunity for you to experiment and start to develop with Ordnance
Survey’s open data products and services and will provide you with the
tools and techniques needed to use, analyse and style a range of open
datasets relevant to them.****
We’ve updated the workshop material and the masterclasses follow the format
of previous workshops in combining theory and practical sessions. They
follow the journey of downloading the data, importing it into open source
software and mashing with other open datasets to provide analysis. During
the workshops we’ll also be working with OS
OpenSpace<http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/innovate/innovate-with-open-space.html>,
Ordnance Survey’s free web mapping service that allows users to display
up-to-date Ordnance Survey mapping in a web page or online environment. The
workshop will explain how to create file formats that can be easily
imported into web mapping to show a list of locations. ****
For the more advanced users, we are introducing our cartographic design
principles and run through how to style map data features using open source
software, and add the finishing touches to their map such as legends and
scales bars.****
Ordnance Survey is able to offer up to 40 free places at each master class,
running from 9.30 am until 5.00pm each day. Locations and dates of the
sessions:****
- Thursday 7 November – Southampton, Ordnance Survey head
office<https://os-odmc-southampton.eventbrite.co.uk/>
****
- Monday 11 November – London, Royal Geographic
Society<https://os-odmc-london.eventbrite.co.uk/>
****
- Wednesday 13November – Cardiff
University<https://os-odmc-cardiff.eventbrite.co.uk/>

****
- Thursday 28 November – University of
Nottingham<https://os-odmc-nottingham.eventbrite.co.uk/>

Just a quick note to anyone who was planning on attending the Early Photography in Scotland edit-a-thon at the National Library of Scotland on Saturday: owing to the fact that some kind soul saw fit to give me the mumps, I will have to postpone the event to a date as yet to be determined.
Please accept my apologies, and keep an eye out for notice of the reschedule date, which will be sent around once alternate arrangements have been made.
If you are available, you may wish to join us for the Edinburgh Wikimeet which is still taking place on 27 October at 13:00, in the Malt Shovel Inn (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Edinburgh_4)
With many swollen apologies,
Ally

Wikimedia UK is committed to supporting our volunteers and to encourage
them to teach others how to edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, we
are running a weekend training workshop. This will take place on the
weekend of 23—24 November 2013 in Cardiff. This session is targeted at
volunteers in Wales and the immediate surrounding areas. We are especially
interested in editors of Wicipedia Cymraeg who work through the Welsh
language. However, both English and Welsh language editors will be welcomed.
The workshop will be delivered by a professional training company and aims
to improve delegates’ abilities to deliver any training workshop. It’s
especially relevant to anybody who already runs Wikimedia-related training,
or is very interested in doing so in near future.
The workshop is a chance to:
- Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and
training skills
- Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when delivering
specific Wikipedia workshops
- Share your skills with others
- Help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long
term.
The course will run from 9:30 am—6:30pm on Saturday and 9am—5pm on Sunday.
A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. We should also be able to
cover travel and accommodation if you let us know in advance.
If you are interested in attending, please indicate your commitment by
signing up on <
https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Training_the_Trainers/November_2013_event>.
Spaces are limited to 12 places.
If you are not able to attend this time but would like to take part in the
future, please add it to the event page or let me know by email to <
katie.chan(a)wikimedia.org.uk> — we will be offering more sessions in the
future.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I can also put you
in touch with past participants who will be able to share their experiences
with you.

Katie
