Hello,
I am not sure yet whether I want to join or am able to, being under 18
(I'm 15) and needing parental consent and also because, looking at the
recent posts to the mailing lists, it all seems to be just starting
out and organising itself. Lets say I did want to join, I paid £12
and my parents signed the form (which, by the way, doesn't seem to
exist at the given link on the website,
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page#Join_up.21), could I do so now?
I mean, at this general time.
Thanks,
Isabell.

Over the next three months I will be providing as many details regarding the wikimania bid as possible.
The idea being that as events unfold with the bid, those involved with wikimedia uk can be kept
informed as chapter support and involvement is key. Any tasks that need doing on and off wiki will
be posted here as well, any time that be given to complete these will be greatful.
1) Bidding Date
2) Jury Announcement
3) Travelwiki content
4) Other Bids
1) Cary Bass recently moved the start of the bidding to 28th January so for the time being it seems
thats the closest thing so far to having an official start date.
2) Several days ago the voting members of the jury were selected, along with 3 advisors from the foundation office
and board and one moderator. The voting members are below. The full jury can be found
@ http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2010/Jury
Ting Chen (Wikimedia Foundation Board - community elected member)
Delphine Ménard (Wikimania 2005, 2006 & 2008 organisation, chapters)
Samuel Klein (Wikimania 2005 & 2006 organisation)
Austin Hair (Wikimania 2005 & 2006 organisation, chapters)
Mohammed Ibrahim (Wikimania 2008 organisation)
Frank Schulenburg (Wikimedia Foundation Head of Public Outreach)
Teemu Leinonen (Advisory Board)
3) To assist in gathering information for the bid i suggest using content from the Travelwiki page on Oxford.
Not everything on that page should be included in the bid, but alot of it is useful. As far as i am aware the GFDL
allows CCBYSA contribs but not vice versa. Hence why info from Knol can be used on wikipedia but not the other
way around. An attribution page will be created as well to ensure compliance. If someone wishes to check that my
understanding of this is correct i would appreciate it.
4) Work on the other bids has now got underway. So far the two active bids are amsterdam and gdansk, the
latter being created off site right now and i assume will be copied over. The amsterdam bid is someway off but
the gdansk is practically complete. I have been told that the language of the bid is not a factor in the bidding process.
Hope this is helpful

Hi all,
We're looking for one or more people who is able to help the chapter by volunteering to act as a teller for the AGM. Ideally we would want one or two people who could manage the process from start to end:
- receiving candidates applications by email
- checking candidates qualify (e.g. they are over 16 and have filled out the form correctly)
- sending out the ballot papers to voters with the candidate statements
- receiving postal votes back in
- attending the AGM (which is expected to be at Birmingham University on a Sunday around mid March) to receive physical votes
- counting the votes and announcing the results
The only restriction on who can be a teller is that they cannot be a candidate for the Board. Other than that, we would welcome all volunteers.
The full details are set out in the Election Rules that were adopted at the last Board meeting and are set out here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=1355885
Please let me know if you would like to volunteer to do this for the chapter. If you would like to volunteer but can't do all the parts please contact me and we will try to work something out!
Regards,
Andrew Turvey

Nope! Hopefully we'll be through to worst of it by summer 2010,
though. No way to know what the exchange rates will be.
> It would seem to me that planning any event in 2010 will need some nerve!
I don't think we need to worry too much, it's not like the rest of the
world is doing much better.
After browsing around the 2010 wikimania pages at meta i noticed that an edit had been made to the gdansk bid page. I
went to the web address linked to the email address posted on the page and stumbled accross a very complete looking
poland bid. The link is http://www.wikimania2010.pl/wiki/Strona_g%C5%82%C3%B3wna . If we are all serious about making
a bid this year then we need to get our backsides into gear because we have some work to do. For the time being, working
on the empty sections of the bid is a good start. A huge amount of work isnt needed from everyone, what needs to happen
is for everyone to give a little time to editting the page. Even the odd sentance to a section helps.
We have probably the best opportunity to host wikimania now than we will for many years to come if it ends up going somewhere
else in Europe. I think that its also a chance to get rid of the stigma held by the foundation and other chapters, that the UK
did nothing but procrastinate. We can be finally be put on the map and stand shoulder to shoulder with other chapters and
not be simply looked over. It can get the chapter known within the uk and not simply when there is drama on the english
wikipedia. Let's get to work people :)

You need to be in the know in order to get the joke, I see no need for
everybody to get the joke.
