Hello,
as you know at the moment Wikipedia is stil blocked from the china mainland
gouvement. But this is probably not their only measure against the
WikiMedia-projects.
Please take a look at the following site:
http://www.wikicn.com/wiki/%E9%A6%96%E9%A1%B5
This site is named as Wiki China and is hosted from some chinese companies.
They call themselve the first chinese wiki encyclopedia and had (machine)
copied over tens of thousands of articles from the chinese Wikipedia site,
without mentioning their source, and without any hint of GFDL. Most articles
has stil the interwiki-links in them, natuarally without any other language
provided from this site. Further more they have cencored most of the
sensitive articles, which could probably be the reason of the blocking.
Is there any possibility from the board to take any action? A mention of the
source and GFDL is in my oppinion the fundamental action, which they should
take.
Greetings
Ting (:en:User:Philopp :de:User:Wing :zh:User:Wing

Hi all,
I'm sending this because I noticed a request for a Bosnian Wikisource:
http://wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Language_domain_requests#bs.wikisourc…
Now, Jimmy Wales said IIRC that it was due to ignorance and that it
was a mistake that we had separate Wikipedias for these so-called
languages.
For this reason, it strikes me as counterproductive to start up a new
project in Bosnian.
Yês, there are already Wikisource subdomains for Croatian and Serbian,
which in itself strikes me as unfortunate and counterproductive, but I
think that it would be even more counterproductive to promote such a
farce of forced separation of what could be fantastic combined efforts
when there is a clear path to stop the nonsense without hurting the
status quo -- with Wikisource, there is no Bosnian version yet, and
Croatian and Serbian versions are small, compared to Wikipedias.
Just as Angela said with regards to Simple English projects
(Wikiquotes and Wikibooks), a source is a source. Since Croatian,
Bosnian, and Serbian are 99.9999999% mutually intelligible, it seems
nonsensical to me to separate Wikisources, given that Wikisource isn't
even supposed to have original content.
Now, for all the people out there who would like to tell me that
Croatian, Serbian, and Bosnian are really separate languages, that's
obviously nonsense.
The best explanation seems to be that it's a single language, called
different names by different people.
After all, how else is it possible that people who a decade ago spoke
"Serbo-Croatian" now speak a different language? The answer is, it
isn't. They still speak the same language, they just call it different
things.

I just deployed an LVS load balancer in front of squid at the Korean
cluster, we're sending all Asian traffic through it. The change in IP
address means users in China will probably be able to access the site for
now, until the authorities block us again.

"SUBMIT! SUBMIT TO WIKIPEDIA!" heh :-)
The use of "logged" in two different ways is (apparently) very bad. How about:
Your IP address is recorded when you edit. If you are not
logged in, it will be shown publicly. See
privacy policy.
Can anyone go even shorter and not lose important info?

Just a warning to everybody; I [Brion] will be moving the file storage
for Commons from our overloaded image server to another machine in a
few hours. Temporarily the ability to re-upload over existing files is
suspended to ensure that files won't be lost in this process -- sorry
for any inconvenience this causes.
Also during the actual switch, some of the latest uploads may also
appear to be missing until the final bits are copied over. I'll put up
a site notice warning when that's ready to happen. --Brion VIBBER

The Great Wiki Raid of '05
Futurists from around the world conduct a 24 hour "knowledge assault"
on Wikipedia.org for the purpose of demonstrating how knowledge is
created in a digital world.
(PRWEB) October 30, 2005 -- The Great Wiki Raid of '05 begins at 12:01
A.M. 31 October. For 24 hours futurists from around the world will
mount a "knowledge assault" on Wikipedia.org, the world's largest
collaborative online encyclopedia. Their goal is simple: to improve
public knowledge about the field of futures studies.
The World Futures Studies Federation is the organizing force behind
The Great Wiki Raid. WFSF "raiders" will endeavor to add as much
information as they can, in multiple languages, regarding the topic
"futures studies" over the course of one day. Choosing Wikipedia as
their "target" acknowledges the dramatic way in which digital
technology is transforming knowledge creation and distribution.
Wikipedia, "The free Encyclopedia that anyone can edit," has grown in
less than five years to include editions in 200 languages. The English
language version alone contains over 790,000 articles. Articles from
Wikipedia have been quoted by the media, referenced in scholarly
journals and books, and even appeared as sources in governmental
debates. As its popularity continues to grow collaborative knowledge
making will become the norm. In the future, knowledge raids like this
one, and even knowledge wars might be frequent occurrences. How these
changes might impact the larger issues of culture, academics, and
politics are just a few of the topics that futurists are working to
better understand.
Those interested in observing the wiki raid as it takes place should
visit www.wikipedia.org. From the main page type "future studies" in
the search box and click on "go." The raid will be taking place from
00:01 GMT on 31 October until 00:01 GMT 1 November.

We've now moved ms.wikipedia.org, th.wikipedia.org and ja.wikipedia.org to
the Yahoo cluster in Seoul. With the addition of ja, it's now getting most
of its planned traffic share, there's only a few other small wikis which
could potentially be moved. It's dealing with the load quite well.
A few teething problems were reported, and there might yet be some to be
discovered, but for the most part, it's working as planned.

Dear all,
I'm proud to announce that today (29th October 2005) the Frisian Wikipedia
has reached 2,000 pages. The lucky page is Willem Loadewyk, the Stadtholder
of Fryslân from 1584 until 1620.
* The first 1,000 pages toke almost two years.
* The second 1,000 toke about a year and 4 months
* The last 250 pages were created in the last four months.
I think you shall ask for other language expert for some judgement about this issue.
My english is bad so I may not have the skill to give you what I have in mind. But I think some Indonesian words is not recognized in Malay and vice versa, some recognized in both language but have different meaning. It is so difficult for making article but satisfying users from both language.
As far as I know. There is no Malay (ms) subdomain language wikisource ever requested. So there is no point why id subdomain can not be created.

You think, perhaps, but linguists would beg to differ.
The differences between Indonesian and Malay are mostly on the level
of US vs UK differences -- minor differences of spelling, a few dozen
different words...
But even most reasonable Indonesians do not believe that they truly
speak a different language than Malaysians.
Are there any _true_ differences between the languages?
I think a particularly telling proof is that if I copy the text of an
article from the Malay WP and run it through an Indonesian
spellchecker, there are 0 mistakes. Hmm.
