Hello folks,
I have just submitted a patch to the problem, that sometimes a user is
blocked longer than is intended. The problem is described as following and
is submitted as Bug 856 in Bugzillar:
If a user is blocked, say for 2 hours. And he tries to make some edit
though. Then the IP he uses would be also blocked for the timespan. If he
tries to make some edit a second time, then his IP would be blocked for
another day, exceeding the priviosly defined 2 hours.
The patch I submitted should fix this bug. The auto-block should never
exceed the user-block in any case.
Thanks

Hi,
I pushed hard to get the
subdomain lad.wikipedia.org
established. And now that
it is up and running it has
become a target of vandals.
Earlier I'd asked how to get
admin/sysop access to be
able to administer the wiki
but I haven't heard.
Could someone help?
I'm willing to administer the
wiki and help promote and
aid its progress, but we need
someone who can grant admin
rights. If it is not done soon there's
going to be a lot of vangalism and
this is just not right.
Could someone please help?
Thanks,
Jay B.

... at least not for the past three months or so.
In the past you only had to drop the name of some
language you'd heard of and a new wiki for that
language was created right away. This surely wasn't a
very intelligent approach, for it left us with quite a
number of inactive Wikipedias.
Nowadays, it's the opposite extreme: there are heaps
of requests that have been discussed very thoroughly
by the community (cf.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages).
Some of them are pretty well-qualified and supported
by numerous native speakers willing to contribute.
However, not a single new Wikipedia has been set up
for quite a while now.
Some time ago there had been a remark that it was hard
for our developers to recognize which new language
proposals can be considered as accepeted by the
community (and therefore created). That's why I made a
separate page intended to list languages that
unambiguously qualify for a new wiki (cf.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Approved_requests_for_new_languages).
Since this can be a controversial question I only
placed those cases there that are 100 % unequivocal
(at least 5 supporters, at least 2 native speakers,
ISO code, no objections, etc.).
I then also mailed to wikitech-I asking for the
creation of the Neapolitan WP (in which I have no
personal interest whatsoever), just to start with the
one that seems to have the highest number of editors
waiting to get started. I got only one reply and that
one was not really helpful.
A few days ago, user ILVI filed his request for the
installation of the Ladino Wikipedia (another one that
qualifies without any doubt) at wikitech-l. He got no
reply at all.
Before any misunderstandings might arise: I know that
our developers are extremely busy (and AFAIK unpaid,
too - good gosh...). I was just wondering if somebody
has an idea how we could remedy this situation and
maybe have, like, one new WP per month (so we don't
lose too many potential new contributors)?
Regards,
Arbeo

Thought you all would find this amusing - Jeremey Wagstaff, WSJ tech
columnist, had a great piece about the Wikipedia as a new cliche...
http://loosewire.typepad.com/blog/2005/09/the_new_cliche_.html
The New Cliche: "It's the Wikipedia of..."
You know something has arrived when it's used to describe a
phenomenon. Or what people hope will be a phenomenon. Here's a
sampling:
* Laptops This from Nicholas Negroponte, describing his $100
laptop for the developing world (via Andy Carvin's Waste of
Bandwidth): "It's the Wikipedia equivalent (of hardware)," he said,
describing the spirit of the laptop initiative.
* Gasbuddy Poster at ezboard: "It's the Wikipedia of Gas pumps. I
use it whenever I need gas. I can't believe I forgot about it until
now."
* New York Times — This from a Xanga blogger: "It's the Wikipedia
of newspapers: great resource with plenty of interesting but useless
content. For goodness' sake, it's a newspaper, not Cosmo Girl."
* The UK Good Food/Good Pub guide, described on Wikipedia chat as
"It's the wikipedia of food guides"
* Urban Dictionary — described by this blogger as "the Wikipedia
of the streets beyach!"
* Sushi World Guide — "it seems the community is still growing. It
is the 'Wikipedia of Sushi'.
* Pure Energy Systems – " We will be the Wikipedia of alternate
energy technology."
* Wondir — hailed on the unofficial google blog as "the Wikipedia
of answer sites"
* Dermatlas — described here as "the Wikipedia of dermatology atlases"
* Math World — described here as "the wikipedia of math"
* GuitarWiki — described by a visitor as possibly becoming "the
Wikipedia of the guitar world"

I'm not worrying too much ;) But I am trying to help
Kinaray-a speakers get their own wp. Things look like
nobody informed the Yahoo group mentioned in the
request.

Hi all,
Since there is currently no shwiki-l, I am sending my message here.
I would like to know if http://sh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enigmopedija is
really encyclopaedic (not that article, but the contents of the
so-called "Enigmopedija"), or appropriate for Wikipedia.
Many of the entries are about abbreviations (kratice) which should
probably be redirects instead, or anagrams (for example, the page
"Sarajevo (u enigmatici)" is a list of anagrams of the word
"Sarajevo").
In addition, it seems that the majority of the entries in
"Enigmopedija" are copyvios: they are copied verbatim from "Leksikon
zagonetača Jugoslavije" (by Stjepan Horvat), which I am guessing is
copyrighted.

Hi,
I was wondering if the Aromanian Wikipedia could be
moved to a new subdomain since the language has just
received its own three-letter ISO code, "rup".
When the Wikipedia was set up, there was no ISO code,
just a SIL code, so the subdomain is at:
http://roa-rup.wikipedia.org
"roa" is the ISO code for "Other Romance languages",
while "rup" was the SIL code for Aromanian.
Danutz, another member from the Romanian Wikipedia,
applied for an ISO code last year, and received a
reply
recently that an ISO code had been allocated
to the language (which has about 500,000 speakers).
The e-mail is as follows:
The ISO 639 Registration Authorities' Joint
Advisory Committee (JAC) has decided to include in the
ISO 639-2 table (alpha-3):
Identifier: rup
English name: Aromanian; Arumanian;
Macedo-Romanian; Macedo-Romanian
French name: aroumain; macédo-roumain
Indigenous name: armâneashti
Best regards,
Håvard Hjulstad
(secretary of ISO 639 JAC)

So, I was wondering whether it was possible for the
Wikipedia to be moved to:
http://rup.wikipedia.org
This is now the ISO code and the convention states
that Wikipedia subdomains should be based on ISO
codes.

Usually, jubilees of individual Wikipedias announced
here are not as interesting to the readers as they are
to the one who announces them.
Nevertheless, here's one milestone that I think is
well worth being noted. It's not exactly the number of
articles passed - 100 - it's rather the Wikipedia that
has produced them.
I'm talking about the Waray-Waray edition which was
created not even a fortnight ago. Sure, it's still a
very long way to go from having 100 articles to having
a full-size encyclopedia. But then again, almost half
of all Wikipedias have not yet reached that mark even
though they have existed for much longer then
Waray-Waray.
Is there something we can learn from this example? I
most definitely think so. It's the fact that neither
setting up new language subdomains by the dozen nor
ruling them out altogether is the right answer to the
question of multilingualism. Instead - at least that's
what I'm convinced of - will having a clear set of
rules for new languages and as well as looking into
each case individually increase Wikipedia's value even
more in the future.
My congratulations to our friends from the
Philippines! Please keep up the good work.

Hi,
I would like to clarify why Kinaray-a has been removed
from the requests for new languages. I don't speak
Kinaray-a myself, but I am a Filipino, and our group
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/philwiki> has been
trying to solicit support for the creation of the said
Wikipedia.
I am moving it again in the new requests. Please wait
for us to gather enough support before it is
transferred again to no support. Thanks.
