Dear All,
Just following the quick note I've put on the water cooler today: the Chapter is continuing to develop a privacy policy that will govern the usage and management of data in connection with the sites we host.
'Yawn' you say? Well, the sooner we can get a robust policy drafted and then approved by the board, the sooner we can move on with the formal transfer of the QRpedia domain, and getting to do all the fun stuff with the technology in the future :)
Link to the policy is: http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy
Feel free to ask questions in reply and on wiki, but I am on annual leave tomorrow (Friday 12th) so may have to ask others to answer in my stead until Monday!
Thanks :)

Have you involved the LCA team from the WMF in the drafting of this privacy policy? No doubt they would have some helpful comments. I could get in touch with Geoff and Luis about this, if you'd like me to?

" It is based on legal advice and following review of the Wikimedia Foundation's Privacy policyhttps://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_policy ." - not sure if that's WMF LCA, but yes, they would have some useful comments. I'd suggest finishing the basic Privacy Policy off first before asking them to read it though, as there are basic problems such as the link for "please click this link for further details" not existing.
"This policy describes what happens to personal information obtained through the websites hosted at uk.wikimedia.org and wikimedia.org.uk. This policy will be updated periodically." - WMUK wiki is currently on the Foundation's servers so is subject to the Foundation's privacy policy - not this one if I understand correctly?

Doesn't mean it can't be subject to both. And there are currently plans for WMUK wiki hosting to be moved away from WMF servers.

Is the hosting switch actually going ahead? I know we'd been discussing this, but I'd lost track of who was going to make the decision...
Andrew.
(still not convinced it's a good idea, for various reasons)

Ultimately? As far as I understand, the board, based on recommendation.
Staffs & our lovely technology contractor have been looking into the technical details over such a move, what it entails etc. The technology committee is due to meet on 18th to discuss this (among other topics) - https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/IT_Development/Progress_meetings/18_April_2013. Feel free to join in and take part in the discussion! :)

Thanks for sharing that link - one of the biggest problems I see with moving off the Foundation servers is the lack of SUL.
There's also the issue of keeping it updated etc, but that's less of a problem now that we have Tom and Emmanuel.

Morning all,
Darn my smartphone, I read this and couldn't resist logging in to reply to reassure
The idea that this needed to be put in place originated from conversations with Geoff. I hope to be meeting with LCA staff when in the foundation offices at the end of the month too.
The policy is not a polished/finished version - I just needed to get it out on the wiki before leaving the office yesterday. It will have a through tidy up/go through in due course (so, interlinking etc) but I wanted to get any community input at this stage. Feel free to correct mistakes you find as per usual :)
Lets deal with the hosting of the UK wiki at Tech Comm - http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/IT_Development/Progress_meetings/18_April_2013T... to move was made by the Board in March - we'll discuss the issues next week (all welcome to join what will be a telecon) and draw up proposals to mitigate/tackle issues. We've been in touch with WMF staff about the issue too.
Have a lovely weekend all!

My recollection from a board meeting is that we were instructed to go ahead with the transfer. I can't find which meeting it was though...

Indeed, at the 9th Feb board meeting. See the minutes (under 'tech committee') at: http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Minutes_9Feb13#Education_committee
Thanks, Mike
