Hi all,
The Guardian Education Supplement's planning on writing an article on the use of Wikipedia in academia, and they're looking for Wikimedians who are also UK-based academics that they can talk to (and also academics that have an aversion to Wikipedia). If you think you'd fit the bill, or know someone that might, please could you get in touch asap? They need to talk to someone today ideally...
Thanks, Mike

What about Wikipedians who used to be academics (like me!)?

I think they're ideally after current academics, but if you're willing then I'll send them your contact details.
Thanks, Mike

Coming late to this discussion, but I'm an academic and wikipedian, & have argued with colleagues about the use of wp by students - but if they are looking for someone who uses wp in a module/course then I can't help.

Thanks for everyone's recommendations; I've passed as many of them on as I could. I also talked to them for about 30 mins about my edits to Wikipedia (although I keep forgetting how small my enwp edit count is, considering how much time I spend on Wikimedia...) and everything that the UK community + WMUK's trying to do with education at the moment.
Thanks, Mike

One further question from them, which is a rather interesting one:
"Is there any way at all knowing who the TOP UK academic author is?"
Thanks, Mike

Do you mean generally top in the academia, or the top UK academic in terms of Wikipedia edit count?

That means we basically have to find a list of all academics who are Wikimedians anyway!
On a separate note, I also came up with the possibility of using Wikipedia as a metric for academic prominence: rank academics by the number of Wikipedia articles in which they've been cited.

I'm strictly speaking not an academic but I edit extensively articles on my field of expertise (in fact, I've pretty much single handedly rewritten the whole field on WP due to a lack of interest...) and so some of the question angles synced with what I experience. I flicked through the questionnaire, and came away with the feeling that many of the questions seem to largely miss the point, or misunderstand the WP eco system. For example:
"Researchers are not allowed to write about their original research in Wikipedia"
Is nowhere near a simple agree/disagree question. Is it asking whether WP resists people writing about their own research on WP, or is it talking about unpublished OR Academics are trying to push in. These are two distinctly different questions!!
"Is there any way at all knowing who the TOP UK academic author is?"
Another ill defined question :) by (general) edit count maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:William_M._Connolley

Its difficult to know who counts as an academic (with usernames & people only declaring what they want to declare on their user pages), & whether you mean editcounts or number of FA, GA etc but thinking about those I interact with who might fit the bill...

Dear Wikipedians,
Further to the conversation already on this thread I would like to announce the first event our student club is holding. If possible we would love to link up with efforts to engage the Guardian, and are also close to getting the BBC involved so please do send academics our way!
The London Wikipedia Academy is a mini-conference aimed at starting a conversation between academics and Wikipedians in London, moving from ethereal opinions to organised, evidence based, informed discussions. There will be a number of exciting speakers all engaging in a vital conversation for modern higher education.
Students, librarians and academics from across London have been invited by the first official student Wikipedia society in the UK, Wikipedians at Imperial College, to meet at their South Kensington campus April 13thx-apple-data-detectors://0 545-8pmx-apple-data-detectors://1.
This unique and original event promises to allow those pro and anti Wikipedia to discuss the key issues around its inevitable use by staff and academics, on every topic that is taught at higher education institutions in the capital.
Please register your interest by adding your name or emailing the address at the bottom of this webpage:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/London_Wikipedia_Academyhttp://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/London_Wikipedia_Academyhttp://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/London_Wikipedia_Academy
If the above details could be forwarded to relevant mailing lists, or if you would allow and direct us towards the relevant mailing lists, we would be most grateful.
We hope to see you there!

President, Wikipedians at Imperial College

Hi all,
The Guardian Education Supplement's planning on writing an article on the use of Wikipedia in academia, and they're looking for Wikimedians who are also UK-based academics that they can talk to (and also academics that have an aversion to Wikipedia). If you think you'd fit the bill, or know someone that might, please could you get in touch asap? They need to talk to someone today ideally...
Thanks, Mike
I regularly get a letter published in the Times Higher. So does Keith Flett? Am I an academic?
Does that count?

Not sure. :-)
What sort of letters do you get published - have you ever sent in a Wikimedia-related one?
Thanks, Mike

Hi all,
Resulting article at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2011/mar/29/wikipedia-survey-academic-co... Although I kept feeding them details for others, and sending emails to suggested users, they ended up leading the article with the interview I did with them, including my picture (eek), as I was easily accessible and met their criteria (academic? yup. wikimedian? yup. available for picture? erm... I guess so...).
Thanks for everyone's help on this.
