All,
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Wiki UK Limited is now inviting membership applications! You can download the application form in PDF format from: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ Image:Wiki_UK_Ltd_membership_application_form.pdf
Information is given on the form about membership fees (£12/year standard, £6 for concessions); these need to be paid by cheque initially, although we hope to accept other forms of payment in the future. Applications should be submitted to me at the address given on the form. If you have any queries about the application process, please let me know.
We will formally start accepting members once we have a bank account, as we cannot process membership fees until that time. We will be submitting our application for a bank account in the very near future, and we hope to have this set up by the end of December at the latest.
Thank you for your support so far; I look forward to receiving your membership applications.

You really need to do something about that very quickly - many of us do not have cheque books.

Book and books of cheques and money in the bank have so little correlation...

The big advantage of cheques before we have a bank account is that you will hold on to the money until we are actually able to process the membership applications, which obviously isn't the case with e.g. cash or postal orders. Plus, I don't really want cash / postal order membership fees hanging around in this initial period, as it is easy to dissociate them with the application form, and they're difficult to return if need be.
To summarize the other possible payment options for the future: - Cash: has to be in person, not sent through the post, plus the above issue - Postal orders: see the above issue. - Bank transfer: requires bank account - Direct debit: requires bank account + extras - Paypal / Google checkout: requires a bank account; also has fees charged which means we would get less money through this mechanism - Debit / credit cards: requires bank account, plus extras (or a paypal/google checkout account); also has fees charged.
Once we have a bank account, then we can start accepting some of these other options. Until then, I think that just accepting cheques is the best approach. My apologies to those that don't have them. I thought that they were pretty standard from 16+, and people younger than that can normally get their parents to write one, or am I showing my age?

Cheques constitute a credit facility, I believe, so you need a certain level of credit worthiness to get one (which may make it 18+, for a start). Also, since cheques are becoming used less and less I guess some people just don't bother to get one any more. (I, however, do have a chequebook and will be posting my application in the next couple of days.)

I've not had a cheque book for my private account for over ten years - I find absolutely no need for them in the modern world, but it is true that they still send them out unless you explicitly ask them not to.

A possible solution might be to setup a PayPal or similar account.

As far as I know, no bank account is needed to setup a PayPal account and use it to receive funds. Which is kind of true for cheques too, unless you are cashing them which would be a terrible waste of money (in fees...).

Ian,
On further investigation, a bank account is not needed to open a paypal account, but it is required to withdraw funds from the paypal account. It may be possible to use this, temporarily storing the fees in the account prior to us having a bank account, but we may want to pass the fees onto the person sending the membership fee rather than paying it on receipt. There are other issues, e.g. anyone with access to the account could do whatever they wanted with the money held in it, and the time difference between sending a paypal fee and sending a membership application form.
I'll raise this at the next board meeting (next Tuesday) for discussion.
BTW: we won't be cashing cheques; they'll be held until we have a bank account. Note that cheques are different from paypal accounts in that money leaves the person's bank account at different times; one when paying the cheque into the account, the other when the payment is sent.
Thanks, Mike

Just a little obvious comment here: not having a bank account was probably
the biggest limitation WMUK 1 was facing, so IMHO opening one should be the board's top priority. Cruccone

Everyone is aware of that, and we are in the process of opening an account.

I see the form has a field for $country: does this mean the overseas applications (of UK citizens or otherwise) are accepted?

Just to confirm, yes, anyone can be a member. I believe that you have to be a resident / citizen in the UK if you want to stand for the board, though (although I can't find anything saying this in the AoA...?); otherwise you would be exactly the same as any other member.

I don't think there are any legal requirements in that regard, we made it a requirement for the board elections because it's impractical for someone not in the UK to sign forms, etc. I would probably vote against any candidate not usually resident in the UK for the same reasons, but I don't think there is anything to stop them standing.

The board discussed that and decided not to. I'm not entirely sure why not (something to do with increasing our independence from the projects/foundation, I think).
No, we deliberately chose not to (ask what their Wikipedia alias is), for the following reasons amongst others:
* E-mail will be the chief line of official, legal, communication with members. On-wiki communication is not appropriate for this since people may not check their talk page etc etc. * Interested parties will be engaged with on-wiki via the newsletter, and members will certainly be encouraged to sign up to it. However we gain nothing by forcing members onto the newsletter sign-up list or similar. * Both the company and its members are better off if it does not officially know any links between people's names and their usernames. The members since it preserves their anonymity more rigorously (otherwise we could potentially be subpoenaed to hand over such information) and the company since it makes it perfectly clear that the company is in no way responsible for the activities of its members on a particular wiki. * It also means that we will not be tempted to refuse people's membership based on their onwiki activity, at least as long as they keep their onwiki username private. (Though of course if they are disruptive in meetings etc then we reserve the right to revoke their membership at that point.)
