Dear list,
A heads up that there is a new database of historic (c19th) English prisons: https://www.prisonhistory.org/ This is a pretty canonical database - I can't think of anything like it for any other place or period - with a wealth of detail, and much fine supporting material. Have been adding links to it on historic prisons pages, but obviously can be used to create and enhance entries.
John
I am importing the list here: https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/#/catalog/1505
Should be done in a few minutes...

Is anyone writing a property proposal for this?

Thanks, Mike
That's a fascinating resource.
As I'm sure everyone on this list knows, castles are always relevant. So one thing that occurs to me is that in some instances buildings will have been converted into prisons (eg: Lancaster Castle). It might be worth creating separate Wikidata items where that is the case and linking the two, as otherwise you may have an inception date in the 1090s for a prison. That's the approach being used for data from the Atlas of Hillforts, as where a castles was built on a hillfort (eg: Caus Castle) you would end up with two inception dates which is a bit messy.

If anyone is into matching these entries to wikidata entities, there's a wikipedia page listing UK prisons, inc. historic & closed, at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prisons_in_the_United_Kingdom and of prison hulks (ships): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_prison_hulks
