I was reading the history of LINX (London Internet Exchange) and was interested in how this organization got started.

LINX is a mutually owned membership association for operators of Internet Protocol networks. We provide a neutral interconnection facility and peering platform, known as an Internet Exchange Point (IXP), and represent the interests of our members on matters of public policy.

Back in November 1994, using a donated piece of equipment no bigger than a video recorder and without any legal contracts, five UK-based Internet service providers (ISPs) linked their networks in order to exchange data and avoid paying astronomical transatlantic bandwidth costs.
