Dear all,
I am currently drafting a survey for members - here https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/WMUK_membership_survey_2013/Survey_draft#Gender- which by the way anyone is welcome to review and critique/edit as they wish (I'd like to draw it up to a final draft state by mid-next week) It will be sent out to Wikimedia UK members of which there are about 225.
However, I had aspired to administer a survey following on the from the main one that asked demographic questions. It would always be anonymous, and all questions optional, to try and encourage people to complete as much as they wanted to. The idea would be to get a sense of how diverse our membership is, and in the long term, tackle under-representation.
One section that I am particularly sensitive about is whether and how we ask questions about gender identity - the current question draft is herehttps://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/WMUK_membership_survey_2013/Survey_draft#Gender- and I have been having a discussion on wiki exploring the concerns herehttps://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Talk:WMUK_membership_survey_2013/Survey_draft#Gender_questions .
What I would like is for anyone who is affected by these issues as a result of their gender identity and experience to drop me a private email if they have any thoughts on the matter.
It boils down to a basic problem of leaving groups invisible by not monitoring them as a part of community versus intruding into people's private experiences.
What matters most is that those it could affect have a chance to contribute to that discussion so I'd be grateful if anyone this relates to gets in touch - I'm katherine.bavage@wikimedia.org.uk
Thanks all!
