Speak up for open knowledge and a free internet: Freedom of Panorama Consultation

Dear all As I know most of you will be aware, in the UK we have the legal right to take photos of public art and buildings and share or publish them in print, on social media, photo sharing websites, Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. This right, known as Freedom of Panorama, does not exist across Europe, with restrictive laws existing in France, Sweden and a number of other countries. The European Commission wants to harmonise the rules concerning the sharing of these pictures across the European Union, and is consulting on this until 15th June. Wikimedia UK believes that the EU should replace the current inconsistent set of laws with Europe-wide legislation allowing people to share images of public art, buildings and skylines for all purposes. This includes commercial use, which would enable people to share pictures on social media and image sharing sites such as Facebook, Flickr or Instagram without being in breach of copyright law. It would also enable images to be used for free educational purposes on the Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, and reduce the time and money currently wasted on rights clearance issues, for example in guidebooks to works of art or architecture in countries including France, Italy, Sweden and Belgium.Please respond to the consultation by next Wednesday 15th June, ideally using You Can Fix Copyright's public answering guide <http://youcan.fixcopyright.eu/limesurvey/index.php/591338?lang=en&newtest=Y>, and ensure that the UK’s rights are preserved, whilst supporting the extension of Freedom of Panorama across Europe. The Commission is also consulting on Ancillary Copyright, which Wikimedia UK believes is both unnecessary and unfair on ordinary internet users. We would encourage you to respond to this at the same time as the Freedom of Panorama consultation. UK Wikimedian of the Year awards nominations

It is an annual award given by Wikimedia UK to thank those in the UK or abroad who have helped the UK Wikimedia movement. TLS review of Jack Lynch, You Could Look It Up

Enjoyable two-page review today in the Times Literary Supplement by Peter Thonemann, flagged on the front page as "The triumph of Wikipedia?" Lynch's book You Could Look It Up has the subtitle "The reference shelf from ancient Babylon", and WP is duly mentioned in the review at length, with Rich Farmbrough getting a namecheck. Thonemann is at Wadham College, Oxford, and gives good quotes: e.g. "Wiki-editors are, in my experience, an exceptionally friendly and helpful bunch". Charles

AGM and Meet Up on 9th July

Dear all I'm pleased to confirm that this year's Wikimedia UK AGM and WMUK Meet Up will be on *Saturday 9th July* at Impact Hub in Birmingham. We will be finalising the schedule over the next few weeks but are planning to start at 10.30am, with half an hour for tea, coffee and networking before moving into talks, workshops and other activities. The AGM itself will be at 3pm and is scheduled to finish by 5.30pm at the latest. We would encourage you to come and stay for the whole day, particularly if you are a member and can vote at the AGM, although all volunteers, editors and potential volunteers and editors are welcome. We will circulate registration details soon - please make sure you do register if you are planning to attend. We will provide a light lunch and refreshments. We have scheduled time for a series of '*lightning talks*' after lunch, which will generally be short, five minute presentations on any subject relating to Wikimedia, open knowledge or the open sector more broadly. If you would like to give one of these talks, please email Richard Nevell on richard.nevell(a)wikimedia.org.uk with your name and the subject you'd like to speak about. We are also looking for a *volunteer photographer* to lead a 'Wiki Takes Birmingham' tour of the local area, along with Richard Symonds (as the local area expert!) Again, please let Richard Nevell know if you would like to do this. Any member who wishes to bring forward a resolution for consideration at the AGM must inform the charity, and supply a copy of the suggested text, by no later than Friday 3rd June 2016. Participants to Wikimania 2016 filled in information for posters here : https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Posters Before printing them out, we think it could be a good thing to review them, mainly to make sure they're understandable and avoid as many mistakes as possible. As most people who submitted their posters are non-native English speakers, I'm turning to you for some help : who would be willing to review the posters ? Consultation on new draft strategic framework for Wikimedia UK

Dear all Over the past few months I have been leading the process of reviewing and refreshing Wikimedia UK's strategic framework, and developing a new business plan for 2016 - 19. The draft strategic framework sets out a new vision for the charity and I would love to hear from volunteers, members and other stakeholders about whether you support the proposed direction of travel. The process so far has involved a board away day in December, a planning session with the staff team, and a review of the draft documents at the board meeting in March. Community consultation on the strategic framework forms an important part of this process and will run until the end of this month. https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/2016_Strategy_Consultation The planned outputs from the strategic planning process will be a clear, concise strategic framework for the period 2016 to 2019, which outlines our vision, mission, values, planned outcomes, strategic goals and objectives and major programme strands, plus a three year business plan which puts the strategy in context, articulating the external context and drivers, planned priorities and programmes for the three year period and internal resources including staffing and funding. When considering the draft strategic framework, I would be particularly keen for you to bear these questions in mind - although please don't feel that you have to answer all (or indeed any) of them: 1. Do you agree with the overall strategic framework proposed? If not, why/what changes would you like to suggest? 2. Is there anything missing? 3. How should WMUK prioritise activities? 4. How can we work with you on delivering the strategy? Hello all, With the local UK elections out of the way it's full steam ahead to the EU Referendum on June 23. Our friends at independent, nonpartisan factchecking charity Full Fact think it's important that we make this important decision based on facts rather than feelings, and to that end they are hosting an editathon <https://fullfact.org/blog/2016/apr/eu-wikipedia-edit-thon/> at Newspeak House <https://www.nwspk.com/> on Bethnal Green Road in East London from 10.30 to 5 PM this Saturday (14 May) to make sure all the Wikipedia pages about the EU, Referendum and related topics are as accurate as possible. If you care about this important decision, why not come along and support the democratic process by making sure the electorate has the best, most accurate and impartial information to hand when deciding on the future of the UK.
