"C of E laser scanning project and free website to make ‘huge
difference’ to family history researchers"
"Funding for the programme has come from Historic England, the
National Lottery Heritage Fund and Caring for God’s Acre, a charity
which helps care for burial grounds, and genealogy research websites."
It is to be hoped that NLHF's new requirement, that the results of
what they fund be released under open licence, will apply, and that no
exemption to that has been granted.

Subject: University of Edinburgh Library Wikimedia Engagement Survey
Hi everyone, with apologies for cross-posting
At the University of Edinburgh Library we’re looking into how we can better engage our collections and services with the various Wikimedia projects. As part of this, we’ve put together a quick survey – if you have a spare 5-10 mins, please do complete and share with your networks.
Survey closes 9 July.

Hi all
Wikimedia UK's summer/autumn newsletter will be going out at the end of
September. Please let me know if you have any news to share as we'd love to
feature the community.
If your news is unrelated to Wikimedia UK's work but still in the
Wiki-sphere, we're happy to highlight the wider movement's activities in a
dedicated section.
Best wishes

Dear members of the Wikimedia Community,
This year for Wikimania 2021, Wikimedia UK is delighted to announce that we
will be awarding scholarship grants to several individuals within our
community. The aim of these grants is to help facilitate the participation
in this year's conference, providing those who need it with financial and
technical support so they can immerse themselves in the Wikimania
experience. Participants do not need to be a member of Wikimedia UK, and we
encourage all those interested to apply.
In order to be considered for a scholarship award, participants need to
complete* this application, <http://bit.ly/2VKbzlD>* highlighting how they
intend to use the grant and their main reasons for wanting to attend this
year's conference.
With Wikimania fast approaching, we are kindly asking all those who wish to
apply to do so soon. In addition, if you know of anyone who would greatly
benefit from this grant, please share this with them so that they too can
have a chance of being considered. Good luck!
Best regards,
George

Good news:
The British Library have today announced:[1]
"Today's the day - one million 19thC newspaper pages free to view (and
download) on the British Newspaper Archive. And this is just the
start. https://blogs.bl.uk/thenewsroom/2021/08/free-to-view-online-newspapers.html
"
The linked blog post includes a list of titles.
The bad news is that they clarified:[2]
"...Essentially, you need to register to access the free content, but
won't be charged anything"
and said in the blog post:
"The fact that we consider newspapers made before 1881 to be in the
public domain does not mean that we can [SIC] make all pre-1881
digitised titles available for free"
and that this release represents just 2% of the BNA's digitised newspaper.
Still, a start is a start...;
