Good morning
Yesterday evening, emails were sent to all current members of Wikimedia UK
with more information on this year's AGM in Bristol, which you can sign up
to here
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikimedia-uk-2019-agm-tickets-62303110280>.
Volunteers who aren't members are also welcome at this event, although we
would encourage you to become a member
<https://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=4>
(for only £5 a year) to enable you to participate fully in the day. If you
believe that you are a member but did not receive this message yesterday,
please let me know.
*Notice of Wikimedia UK’s Annual General Meeting**Saturday 13th July 2019
at Watershed, Bristol*
The next AGM for Wikimedia UK will be held on Saturday 13th July at the
Watershed in Bristol. As a member of the charity this is an important
opportunity for you to have your say about how we work, influence how we
are run and potentially stand for the board, so we would encourage you to
attend.
The AGM itself will start at 2.30pm, however we have planned other
activities from 11am including talks and workshops, a photography walk of
the local area, and the presentations of our Wikimedian of the Year awards
as well as our inaugural Honorary Memberships. We are using eventbrite for
AGM registrations so please sign up here
<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wikimedia-uk-2019-agm-tickets-62303110280> if
you are able to attend.
*Invitation for candidates for election to the Board*
There are *five trustee vacancies* at this year’s AGM, with three existing
trustees likely to stand again. We are particularly keen to have more
people from the Wikimedia community on the board, so please do consider
standing for these elections. Any member fulfilling the criteria has a
right to stand, although we’d particularly appreciate anyone who has
experience in Legal, Fundraising, Communications or HR. If you wish to
stand please follow the procedure here
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Board/Becoming_a_trustee> and submit your
application to the teller no later than *Friday 28th June*.
*Voting Papers*
All current members of the charity will be sent AGM papers by post,
including voting papers and proxy forms. We would encourage you to make use
of your voting rights, whether or not you are able to come to the meeting
itself. If you are unable to attend, you can appoint another person -
including the Chair of the Board of Trustees - as your proxy to attend and
vote on your behalf.
If you have moved house in the past year, or you are not sure if we have
your correct postal address details, please do email
membership(a)wikimedia.org.uk with any updates by Monday 1st July. You can
also use this email to contact us if you haven't received your voting
papers by Monday 8th July.
*Annual Report and Accounts*
The draft annual report and accounts are in the process of being signed off
by the board and the Auditors, and will be published online prior to the
AGM. To save paper, we won’t be sending hard copies of the annual report to
all our members this year however copies will be available at the AGM. The
Strategic Report will also be available in hard copy or in a PDF online by
the time of the AGM.
*Lightning Talks*
Lightning Talks have proved a popular feature at past meetings and give
members the opportunity to hear about a wide range of projects and
activities related to Wikimedia and open knowledge more broadly. If you
would like to give a talk, please email membership(a)wikimedia.org.uk and a
member of staff will follow up with you directly.
We would love to see as many of our members, volunteers and other
stakeholders as possible at Bristol’s fantastic Watershed
<https://www.watershed.co.uk/> for our AGM
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/2019_AGM> on 13th July, so please sign up
below!
Kind regards
Katie

Hi all, we are doing a survey of our equipment and can't find where the

Hi all, at our AGM every year we give out prizes for the Wikimedian and
Partnership of the Year. We would love to hear your nominations for who
should win these awards this year. Last year
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/UK_Wikimedian_of_the_Year_2018>, the
University of Edinburgh won the partnership award, while Gwenno Elin
Griffith & Eiri Angharad of Wici Caerdydd won the joint Wikimedian of the
Year award.
Please see the nomination form here

and tell us who you think should win these awards for their work over the
past year.
We hope to see you at the AGM!

Call for expressions of interest
Scottish Volunteer Wikimedia Trainers - Train the Trainer
Following the growth of our work in Scotland, Wikimedia UK is keen to
increase our capacity to respond to requests for trainers for editathons
and other events across Scotland. We are also keen to increase our reach,
particularly outside the Central Belt.
We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from anyone who would like
to become an accredited Volunteer Wikimedia Trainer for Scotland. We are
looking for people with a certain amount of flexibility, who are willing to
travel, and who would be interested in proactively seeking out event
opportunities as well as responding to third party requests.
Priority will be given to applicants from Scotland; there may be limited
availability for applicants from outside Scotland.
Please note that places will be offered on the basis of suitability,
availability, and (potentially) geographic location. Please also note that
although previous Wikimedia project experience is highly desirable, we
would also be willing to assist in a self-directed programme of study for
the right candidate.
What we would expect from you:
-
Attendance at a 3 day training course (location tbc) in early November
(currently pencilled for arrival 7th, and course running 8-10th)
-
To lead training for a minimum of 2-3 events per year. This would be a
mixture of third party events which our Scotland Programme Coordinator
would field to you, and those you would organise yourself.
-
To be responsive to communication from Wikimedia UK staff and Event
Organisers, including in advance of the event, and to complete basic
reporting, including returning sign up sheets, afterwards.
-
To represent Wikimedia UK well during the time in which you are
volunteering.
What you can expect from us:
-
Full training and support to become a lead trainer for editathons and
similar events
-
Access to materials for participants
-
Ongoing support from the Scotland Programme Coordinator
-
Job references upon request (paper / email / LinkedIn as required)
-
Reasonable expenses for travel, accommodation etc paid to attend the
events at which you are training.
Course content will include learning about adult learning, session design
for different groups, presentation & delivery, and developing and
evaluating your training. The course will focus on the more technical
aspects of how to be a trainer, rather than Wikimedia content. There will
also be an opportunity to gain feedback on your work. The course itself is
free, and reasonable expenses incurred in order to attend will be covered.
If you would like to put yourself forward for this training, please email
sara.thomas(a)wikimedia.org.uk with a short statement outlining why you’d
like to volunteer, and your suitability for this position. Please include
your previous Wikimedia experience (including username if appropriate), as
well as any previous training, teaching, public speaking or other relevant
experience. The call closes at midnight on 10th July.
This call for expressions of interest can be found on-wiki here:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Wikimedia_in_Scotland/Train_the_Trainer_2019

Sara

This may be useful to those of you involved in GLAM partnerships.
I haven't checked, but for the £500 awards, ts possible that volunteer
time can be used for the matched funding.

Hello Wikimedians, I applied for Glastonbury tickets for Wikimedia
photographers, and our request was initially declined, but Glastonbury got
back to me yesterday and offered us a ticket to send a photographer. The
original person who asked me to ask for a ticket for them can no longer
attend the dates (Wednesday 26 - Sunday 30 June), so I would like to offer
Wikimedia members who are able to take good quality photos the ticket. We
need to tell Glastonbury who is going ASAP, so if you would like the spare
ticket, please email me today if you are a member and have a decent camera
to take photos with. Preference will be given to people who have experience
of submitting quality photos to Wikimedia Commons, so please let me know
your level of experience as a photographer.
All the best,

Last week, on its chatty back page, the Times Literary Supplement commented that the Scottish novelist George Blake (1893–1961) didn't have a Wikipedia article. Well, he does now:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Blake_(novelist)
The comment came in an announcement of a new "series" on Writers Who Are More or Less Forgotten. Which would bear watching, therefore. I found a couple of issues, now fixed, with
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novel_in_Scotland
which also might be more or less forgotten as an article.
