Dear all
We are currently advertising three vacancies at Wikimedia UK! Please
consider applying for these yourself and/or circulating to your networks.
As some of you know, I will be going on maternity leave towards the end of
March and so the board is looking for an *interim Chief Executive*. The
successful candidate will also take on some of Davina's responsibilities as
Director of Finance and Operations, to cover a period of around 12 weeks'
leave from April. The interim CEO role can be freelance or PAYE and will be
part time. Other aspects of both mine and Davina's work will be taken on by
other members of the team, in particular Daria Cybulska (who will be taking
on specific aspects of my role) and Rich Matthews (who will be taking on
more day-to-day financial control, management and reporting).
Richard Nevell is taking a year's sabbatical to work at English Heritage as
their Property Historian for castles. We are therefore looking for a
new *Programme
Co-ordinator* on a full time, fixed term basis to join the programmes team,
based in London.
We are also recruiting for a part time *Programme Co-ordinator in Scotland*
to lead and develop the programme there. This is a new post and can be
based anywhere in Scotland, with the postholder reporting in to Daria as
Head of Programmes.
All posts are detailed online here:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Job_openings. If anyone would like a
confidential discussion about the CEO role, please feel free to contact me
- or get in touch with Daria about the other two roles.
All best

Dear all
I just wanted to give the Wikimedia UK community a heads up that Wikipedia
may be in the spotlight in the coming days, as the Daily Mail and the Sun
are planning to run a story tomorrow about how MPs have (apparently) been
given briefings about concerns Russian trolls are planting ‘fake news’ on
Wikipedia to corroborate the false information they spread on Twitter. The
stories are likely to say that not enough checks are being done by
Wikipedia to make sure the content on the site is not fake.
I'm not personally aware of any such briefings to MPs regarding Wikipedia,
although the most recent oral evidence to the DCMS Fake News inquiry does
refer to known Russian sources on WikiLeaks (with particular reference to
the US election). Obviously I'm assuming that the UK press will know the
difference between Wikipedia and WikiLeaks, but the claims are apparently
linked to the inquiry and this is all I've been able to uncover this
evening.
The Wikimedia Foundation press team has sent a short response to these
claims, as follows:
Wikipedia’s open, transparent model is uniquely resistant to
misinformation. Anyone can edit Wikipedia, to fix mistakes or expand
articles, provided their contributions are neutral and based in reliable
sources. Thousands of people do just this on Wikipedia every day. Nearly
every edit ever made to Wikipedia is available to the public, so anyone can
see how an article has changed over time. Wikipedia is always improving,
and this open model creates accountability and means that bias tends to be
rooted out quickly, leading to a more balance version of the facts over
time.
Best wishes

Hello Wikimedians,
I'm currently testing out a new type of video which I hope will be more
shareable online. I watch a lot of short history explainers, and a lot of
these get a good number of views on YouTube. Neither our YouTube channel or
the WMF one seem to get many hits for their videos, and I think that this
is probably because people just don't search for keywords like Wikipedia,
Wikimedia or other terms directly related to our projects. So what I tried
to do is make a short history of how women artists have been viewed and
treated throughout history that tries to cover as much ground as possible
within a short time, with a short note at the end that explains what
Wikimedia groups are doing to make Wikipedia better represent women online.
Please share the video on social media if you feel like, and let me know if
you have any feedback or if you have ideas for videos that could help
people to become aware of our projects and get involved in them.
Here it is <https://youtu.be/MuGER3tp6G4>.

Hello Wikimedia UK community and Happy New Year.
Firstly, we would like to encourage people to attend the London Meetup
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/London/126> this weekend on Sunday
14th at Penderel's Oak pub in Holborn, which (almost) coincides with
Wikipedia Day (the 17th anniversary of Wikipedia's 'birth' on 15th
January). Wikimedia UK would like to celebrate this with our community and
will be putting some money behind the bar for drinks.
We would like to support the community as much as possible over the coming
year, so please do let us know if there are Wikimedia activities you are
working on that might benefit from the charity's involvement - or apply for
a small project grant here <https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Project_grants>.
If anybody would like to write about their projects for the Wikimedia UK
blog, please get in touch with me and I can help edit and publish your
ideas.
Applications for Wikimania - taking place in Cape Town in July are open here
<https://scholarships.wikimedia.org/apply> until 22nd January; and the
Wikimedia Hackathon, to be held in May in Barcelona, is accepting
applications for scholarships
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2018/Register_and_Attend>
until
30th January. There is also Wiki Indaba
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiIndaba_conference_2018> coming up for
the African and diaspora community in Tunisia in March which is still open
for submissions.
The 1Lib1Ref
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref> initiative
to encourage librarians to contribute to Wikipedia begins on January 15 and
runs until February 3. If you you know of anybody who would like to run a
library editathon, we can help support their efforts so do get in touch.
Please also watch and share our #1Lib1Ref video
<https://youtu.be/AWosehU71ZY> explaining what the initiative is about.
Lastly the annual Art + Feminism <http://www.artandfeminism.org/> event is
taking place at the start of March, and we hope to support events taking
place here in the UK. If you would be interested in organising an event for
this, please also let us know.
See you on Sunday!

Well, you probably don't need to actually be in Ealing, but I've been
passed a query from someone working at a GLAM who in their spare time
is trying to improve Ealing-related articles and who is confused
category structure for articles related to Ealing. Shout if you can
lend a sympathetic hand via email :)

Subject: Free Parliamentary event - RecordDNA – developing an
international research agenda for the future digital evidence base
To: FREEDOM-OF-INFORMATION(a)jiscmail.ac.uk
There are just a few additional spaces left on this event due to last
minute cancellations. This free event aims to share the findings of
the RecordDNA international research network. These include the ideas
gathered from multiple disciplinary stakeholders – both practitioners
and academics – about the components of a digital record and their
vision of the ‘ideal’ useable digital evidence base. The key aim is to
gather further input about the research and practice needed to deliver
the vision in order to finalise a research agenda. This work will
inform policy makers and build future research partnerships.
The task is significant and challenging. The RecordDNA project team
has therefore engaged people around the world in workshops and
crowdsourcing activities. This is the final event at which you can
hear about the work and add your ideas to the question ‘what research
and development is needed?’
The event will be held next to Westminster Hall, UK Parliament 11-1pm
on 30 November 2017. To secure one of the limited number of places
register at
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/recorddna-developing-an-international-resear…

Happy New Year!
The BBC have put image-scans the entire run of the Radio Times
magazine, for the 1930s, online, as part of the BBC Genome Project.
There is a mixture of programme listings (also digitised as text by
the Genome Project), magazine articles (not as text),
specially-commissioned artwork, advertisements, and photographs, with
mixed copyright status.
I've started a discussion on Commons:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#BBC_Radio_Times
to decide how we can best make use of this content. I'll also notify Wikisource.
Your comments, and contributions to the work needing to be done, will
be welcome there.
