Hi all, it was great to talk to some of you yesterday at the London meetup,
and especially the discussion around trying to better organise those
Wikimedians who are also software developers. I think we all agree that
some of the tools people have created to edit and improve Wikipedia,
Commons etc are really useful, but that they aren't very accessible or user
friendly. I think we could make a useful impact if we could organise
developers to put their heads together to work on improving and extending
the vast array of tools that exist already. To this end, I've started a
Slack channel for Wikimedia developers to discuss how we might move forward
with the idea. If you would like to be added to the channel to discuss with
other Wikimedia developers how to take the idea forward and share what you
might already be working on, please reply with your interest and let me
know your email address so I can send you an invite to the channel,
wikidevsuk.slack.com .
All the best,

Hello all,
Just a reminder that Wiki Loves Monuments is around the corner, andn
coincidently we are looking for input on volunteer equipment. (Specifically
photography and AV equipment)
Here is a list of current equipment we have:
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Equipment_Loan_Procedure#Multimedia
We’d ideally strive for some kind of balance between quality and quantity,
but are not averse to a big ticket item if it will facilitate a specific
piece of work.
But ideas suggested to me by volunteers and other Wikimedians so far have
been:
More lapel microphones (to record panel events etc)
Shoulder rig
Video light box.
Filters.
Extra batteries and memory cards.
A bigger telephoto lens
A handy audio recorder
A camera drone
A selfie stick
We have a budget of £1000. If as part of the suggestions, people could also
look at prices and possible good value vendors, that would be helpful
too. Please
reply all here, or alternatively, with suggestions on the wiki.
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Talk:Equipment_Loan_Procedure> Looking to
firm up decisions over the next couple of weeks.
Thanks

Dear all
As many of you will know, Wikimedia UK applies every year to the Wikimedia
Foundation for an Annual Plan Grant to support our charitable activities.
Proposals from the UK and other Chapters are considered by the Funds
Dissemination Committee (FDC) who make recommendations to the Foundation's
board for final approval.
Following our proposal submitted at the end of September, the FDC has
recommended that Wikimedia UK is supported with a grant of £297,500 for
2016/17, which is 96% of our total request and an increase on the amount
received for the current financial year. We are very pleased with this
recommendation, and I would like to thank all the staff, board members and
volunteers who inputted into the development of our plans for next year and
the funding proposal. The team and I look forward to working with many of
you on the delivery of our programmes next year!
You can read the FDC's assessment here:

I spoke about Wikidata at a conference today, and in the audience were
some journalism students. One wants to interview two people who use
Wikidata (as well as me), in order to write a feature on the project.
.
Is anyone willing to chat with them by Skype/ Hangout? If so I can
pass them your email address to make arrangements.

Hello all,
Just a reminder that we have this event coming up this weekend.
It will include a short tour and should be a great opportunity to look at
the ways Wikimedia can work with UK Parliament information and data.
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/house-of-commons-wikipedia-edit-a-thon-ticke…
Hope to see you there.
Many thanks

Hello WMUK folk,
Question: Is it possible to get QRPedia stats for individual links? i.e.
can I pick a page name and ask "how many people visited this particular
Wikipedia page title via QRPedia?"
Background:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2016_N…
We want to delete two redirects from the English Wikipedia but are worried
about breaking QRPedia because they *might* be used in a QRPedia code. So
if we can check *which* title the QR code actually links to, it would save
us a trip to the physical plaque.

Please disseminate as appropriate in your networks. This is an invitation to participate in Wikipedia editathon events run by the University of Edinburgh’s Information Services.
Robert Louis Stevenson Day Wikipedia editathon – Saturday 12 November
This is a final call for tomorrow’s Edinburgh Gothic event<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_…> at the National Library of Scotland for Robert Louis Stevenson Day.
This free event includes:
· Access to the Robert Louis Stevenson exhibition area.
· Gothic badge-making activities using original collage designs by Tessa Asquith-Lamb.
· The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde’ stickers and souvenir certificates printed on the Treasure Island press;
· “Jekyll and Hyde: Illustrating Stevenson’s characters”: a presentation by National Library of Scotland curator, Andrew Martin.
· Lunch provided for free by the National Library of Scotland and possibly also some moustache cookies too.
· The Gothic Wikipedia editathon itself which will take place with exclusive access to the National Library of Scotland’s reading room after it has closed to the public with its focus on improving the quality of articles about all things Gothic; be it creating a page for Robert Louis Stevenson's short story 'Thrawn Janet'; be it improving content on Angela Carter, Alasdair Gray, Louise Welsh or Ali Smith; or even improving Gothic architecture pages or Gothic film pages such as the Ken Russell's movie, 'Gothic'
Come along to learn about how Wikipedia works and contribute a greater understanding of Gothic. Book here.<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_…>
Festival of Architecture Wikipedia editathon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_…>
We are also putting on an evening editathon on Wednesday 16th November 3pm to 7.30pm in Room 1.12 of the Edinburgh University Main Library to mark the end of the Festival of Architecture 2016<http://www.foa2016.com/>. So many names, especially women architects<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Architectu…>, are missing from Wikipedia, the #1 Information site<http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/05/people-love-wikipedia…>, so if you’d like to take part and help redress the balance then you’d be more than welcome.
Full training is given along with suggested pages to work on (although feel free to suggest your own!). There are only 3000 or so very active Wikipedians in the world curating the world’s knowledge (which amounts to the size of a small town like Kinghorn in Fife... or half the size of North Berwick) so if you’d like to contribute to sharing knowledge globally and are interested in architecture, even if it is just to share some openly-licensed pictures to Wikimedia Commons, then please do come along. Book your place and find out more here.<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_…>
In remembrance
Finally, as today is all about remembrance, I thought I’d share with you the outcomes of the Halloween Wikipedia<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:University_of_Edinburgh/Events_and_…> event as there are now some fantastic pages on notable lives that were just not there before, including:
· Recognising the scientific work of Katherine Clerk Maxwell<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katherine_Clerk_Maxwell>
· Professor William Lindsay Renwick<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lindsay_Renwick>, the founder of the School of Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University (also commemorated on the Glasgow School of Art’s WW1 Roll of Honour).
· Ernest Francis Bashford<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Francis_Bashford> the influential British oncologist who pioneered the biological approach to the study of cancer.
· Brenda Moon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenda_Moon> – the first female chief of a university library in Scotland who played a role in bringing Edinburgh University Library into the digital age.
· Janet Anne Galloway <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janet_Anne_Galloway> (1841–1909) promoted higher education for women in Scotland. As a result of the limited educational opportunities open to women, Janet became an active supporter of the movement for higher education provision for women.
Full outcomes are detailed here<http://thinking.is.ed.ac.uk/wir/2016/11/10/samhuinn/> and you can find the Storify with pics & tweets<https://storify.com/emcandre/samhuinn> from the day here<https://storify.com/emcandre/samhuinn>.
