Does anyone of the messing-around-in-boats persuasion have an English
translation for this German term, meaning a waterway sign on a pile?

Hello everyone,
I know many of you are interested in open access so wanted to share this
with you. The Wikimedia Foundation has just announced its new open access
policy.
The announcement and the new policy can be seen here -

Ally's question is very interesting, and as shown by the responses, we
can't really be sure what's effective.
An experiment I have been running for the recent Cinema Museum Editathon
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Program:Wikimedia_UK/Cinema_Museum_…>
has been to set up a publicity subpage
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Program_talk:Wikimedia_UK/Cinema_Mu…>
which includes links to the page views for the sign up page.
I would welcome comments on this on the event talk page
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Program_talk:Wikimedia_UK/Cinema_Mu…>.
I am already aware that this was a somewhat clumsy first step, but what i
would like to refine is a publicity template that can be added to event
pages and which
- provides prompts for suitable ways of conducting publicity
- a record of what has been done so that a group of people preparing for
the event can pick up on jobs and not repeat that which others have already
done
- a record of when things were done (see below)
- a link to the metrics for the page, so that we can easily compare
publicity actions and hit count (but we need to remain aware of the
limitations of any such correlation)
Perhaps we could find somewhere on-wiki to share our thoughts on this. Any
ideas where would be best?
all the best

Hi all,
I've been having a think about meetups and regional outreach. A casual/occasional contributor in Scotland mentioned that he didn't know about the meetups until too late and would have been interested in coming, but as he wasn't always logged in he was missing the notifications and wasn't seeing notices elsewhere.
I was wondering whether it would be possible to track a specific category's newly-added users (i.e. users who add [[Category:Wikipedians in Scotland]], to make it easier to post messages about meetups etc. on talk pages?
I know I've been contacted on my talk page as part of the Gender Gap task force for things, but I'm not sure whether that was someone manually contacting participants or if there's a way to streamline this.
Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Ally

Hello everyone,
Apologies for cross posting.
Wikimedia UK, along with the Open Coalition <http://open-coalition.org/>
and Demos <http://www.demos.co.uk/>, are developing a project called "From
ticks to clicks - understanding and building digital democracy".
We have just made a proposal
<https://www.newschallenge.org/challenge/elections/entries/from-ticks-to-cli…>
to the Knight News Challenge and we would really appreciate your feedback
and support. If you can spare just a couple of minutes please do take a
look and let us know what you think. Comments on the site, rather than
here, are especially appreciated!
With thanks and regards,

I thought it would be interesting to share a summary I just pulled
from the database of how many posts per month the WikimediaUK list had
over the last 3 years. In this period the average numbers have
declined and now they are at 30% or possibly 20% of what they were in
2012.

Hello!
Just a quick message to let everyone know that the National Library of Wales has just contributed 450 images from Welsh Photo Journalist Geoff Charles. These images highlight the advance of modernity into rural Wales c.1940-1960. The images were added using the Flickr2Commons tool but we plan to upload much larger collections soon using Glam Wiki Tools. Watch this space!

/Statement by D'Arcy Myers, interim chief executive:/

As a part of my work as the interim chief executive of Wikimedia UK the
board asked me to undertake a review of our structure and organisation.
This task has been ongoing for some time and concluded with the board
meeting held this past weekend.
With the board, I have concluded that some changes to the composition
and structure of the staff team will position the charity to deliver
best impact against our charitable objectives.
These changes may result in some redundancies, and the staff affected
are being informed. This has been a challenging time and I thank the
staff team for their professionalism throughout this period of review.
I look forward to continuing to lead the charity through the ongoing
transition until a permanent chief executive is in post and ready to
take over.

Hello everyone,
Wikimedia UK and Wellcome Trust <http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/> are delighted
to welcome session proposals for the Wikipedia Science Conference – the
first of its kind – taking place in London on the 2nd and 3rd of September.
The two-day conference reflects the growing interest in Wikipedia and its
sister projects as a platform not just for communicating science but for
scientific research and publishing. Last year, a clinical review paper
authored on Wikipedia was published in a peer-reviewed academic journal.
Meanwhile, scientists and Wikipedians are using papers, data, and figures
to improve Wikipedia and related projects such as Wikidata .
Using these free, open platforms, scientific content is benefiting both
from increased impact and an increased opportunity for checking and review.
This in turn is a benefit of open-access publication models which make the
outputs of research free for anyone to reuse and repurpose.
The two keynote speakers are Dr Peter Murray-Rust
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Murray-Rust> of the University of
Cambridge and Dame Wendy Hall <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_Hall> of
the University of Southampton. Professor Hall was a founding director of
the Web Science Research Initiative and is a Fellow of both the Royal
Society and the Association for Computing Machinery, previously leading the
ACM and the British Computer Society. Dr Murray-Rust, a chemist, campaigns
for open sharing of scientific publications and data. He leads the Content
Mine project to extract data from published papers and has called Wikidata
“the future of science data.”
The rest of the programme will consist of invited speakers, sessions
suggested through this call, and an “unconference” block in which
participants create their own sessions on the day.
The conference is arranged by Wikimedia UK and will be hosted by the
Wellcome Trust at its premises on Euston Road in London. The Trust is a
global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary
improvements in health by supporting the brightest minds.
You can learn more about the conference, and submit your proposal, here
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Wikipedia_Science_Conference>
Thank you,
Stevie
