May I give you some news on the wiki encyclopedias for children:
I have let you know nearly one year ago about the launching of Vikidia
in English[1]:
Vikidia in English now has 1,445 articles and 32 active users. the
advantage in English is that we can pick up, choose, adapt and select
some existing material, especially from Simple English Wikipedia, and
from Wikijunior. Some of the first users on en.vikidia.org also come
from other Vikidia language and it even gather some Dutch teenager from
Wikikids.nl.
Vikidia was first launched in French and there is a similarly developed
counterpart in Dutch : http://wikikids.nl/ . these wikis are 8 and 9
years old now.
Vikidia in French has now more than one million unique visitors a month,
with a yearly growth of audience of nearly 40 %.
It's not a Wikimedia project, yet it is supported by Wikimédia France
that now funds our hosting costs.
Another wiki encyclopedia for children was recently launched in German,
and is supported by Wikimedia Germany. See some English explanation on
it here: [2].
There is some quite significant differences between the way each wiki's
aims, rules and functioning are designed, which we had the opportunity
to discuss between one and another teams/founders.
The guestbook on fr.vikidia show that this resource is really
appreciated by children (and even older peoples), and that there is a
need for such a wiki beside Wikipedia ([3] [4]).
Yet nothing can be done but with a significant community, that's why
your support (as individual people so as an organisation) really matter !
klexikon.de, which claim to be a content - rather than an educational -
wiki for children, directs a great part of its efforts (this is most of
the Wikimedia Germany support) on organizing meeting and workshop for
wannabe editors (teachers or other - mainly - adults). What about
Wikimedia UK supporting something similar? Yet it would demand some
peoples to undertake it... One can also begin with one (or some) blog
post about this project ?

I thought it would be interesting to share a summary I just pulled
from the database of how many posts per month the WikimediaUK list had
over the last 3 years. In this period the average numbers have
declined and now they are at 30% or possibly 20% of what they were in
2012.

Hi all,
Following Edward's email I would encourage anyone involved in editathons or
who is interested in becoming either an online or campus ambassador to
check out:
Wikipedia:Education program/Ambassadors
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Education_program/Ambassadors>
At the bottom of the page are links to apply for online and campus
ambassador userrights. These then show up on the Wikipedia:Education
noticeboard <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Education_noticeboard>.
Established Wikimedians will have no problem getting userrights, but
sometimes the process needs a bit of nudge to get it sorted out a bit
quicker.
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Education_noticeboard>
Currently this is very much addressed to supporting the Education Program,
especially in the USA/Canada. However, various wikimedians in different
chapters across the world (eg
Education Program:Cascadia Wikimedians User Group
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Program:Cascadia_Wikimedians_User_G…>)
are experimenting with using it to run editathons. the Cinema Museum
editathon is one of these in the UK.
This piloting will enable us to:
- identify how effective the extension is
- identify how it might be adapted to be more useful for editathons
- get feedback as regards how friendly people find the interface
Of course, obtaining campus or ambassador userrights also enables
wikimedians to interact more effectively with students on one of the
courses, whether in the UK or further a field.
One issue that warrants further consideration is the extent to which
students get involved with Wikipedia in one of these courses, but never
appreciate the existence of the broader Wikimedian community around them.
Whilst we wouldn't want to be disruptive to the class by pushing community
involvement too hard, we can explore appropriate ways to highlight
opportunities to the students with the approval of the academics running
the courses.
I think there is a lot of room for thought about this.
all the best

Hi all,
Just to let you all know that we are having an editathon at the Cinema
Museum on Saturday 7th March.
The editahon page
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Program:Wikimedia_UK/Cinema_Museum_…>
is a little different as we are using the Education Program
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Education_program> extension.
Feedback on the user interface would be very helpful. Please note, to
register you click "enroll". I intend to draw together a list of
suggestions as regards ways in which the page design could be imporved.
Another innovation is the publicity sub page. There are two ideas behind
this.
1. This allows volunteers to help with publicity online (putting posts
on facebook etc.) and to record what they have done to avoid repetition.
2. There is also a link to the page views which means that we can then
look for the immediate impact of a publicity action. For example, the page
hits peaked at 65 following the advertising of the event on the Wikimedia
UK Facebook page <https://www.facebook.com/WikimediaUK?fref=ts>.
It would be great to see you on the day if you can come, and any help with
online publicity would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: [Wikimedia Announcements] Join the Wikimedia strategy consultation
To: wikimediaannounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hello all,
Five years ago, I was part of the work on a strategic plan for the
Wikimedia movement. Much has changed since then. Now, I’m back...and
we’re working on strategic direction again. :-)
Today, we're kicking-off a two-week community consultation about the future
of Wikimedia.
I hope you'll participate in the online discussion about new internet
trends and how Wikimedia responds to these changes, which will help to
shape the future of Wikimedia.
The discussion is on meta, at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2015_Strategy/Community_consultation
For more background on this consultation, check out this blog post:
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/02/23/strategy-consultation/
Your vision matters. I look forward to hearing from you as we chart the
way forward.

Also I think there are fewer "me too" and "That's great,
congratulations" -type messages, which on the whole is a good thing I
think. I suspect analysis would show just as many topics and
substantive comments.

There has certainly been a shift to Facebook in that time and possibly
to Twitter and maybe the specialist sublists like tech and I think
education. I'm not sure I approve of all of that both for open source
reasons and because it excludes the pseudonymous amongst us. But it has
certainly happened, hopefully in the most part with specialised
discussions now taking place in specialist areas. Regards Jonathan Cardy

This Saturday 21 February there will be an Open Data Day event in a
Cambridge pub, the Panton Arms.
Map here:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Panton+Arms,+43+Panton+St,+Cambridge,+C…
So closer to the station than the regular meetups.
I have only just heard about this. Someone from ContentMine will be there,
and I'll go along. The event runs from 11:30 to 5 pm.
(ContentMine will also be represented that day in a Birmingham event: they
are the people scraping facts from scientific journals. There are 60+
events worldwide.)
