Hi,
Sorry for the short notice, but I've just learned of a London Editathon
next Saturday<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/London/Wadewitz_memorial>that
some people here might want to join in on.
It is part of the Wadewitz memorial programme worldwide.

There is a "bar camp" happening in Birmingham on 7 June 2014 (see below for
details). It would be good to have someone from a Wikimedia perspective
there if anyone is interested, and maybe use the opportunity to advertise
Wikimania this August (the Wikimedia UK Wikimania team are all busy that
day).
*What is a bar camp?* A bar camp is a conference where what happens is
organised by the delegates on the day. The event organisers have to arrange
something, the main one being the venue, but the rest is down to the
delegates. So all the hassle of talk submissions, review and scheduling is
taken away.

Hello all,
Just a reminder that the National Library of Scotland's Wikimedian in Residence will be running an afternoon workshop on 6 June in Edinburgh from 13:00-17:00 at the University of Edinburgh's Main Library. Learn how your organisation can work with Wikimedia projects (not just Wikipedia!) to share your material and your knowledge with a regular audience of millions. Help contribute to a growing a nation-wide Scottish open knowledge movement by bringing together interested local participants, experts, and material to show Wikipedia users from across Scotland and around the world what your organisation has to offer.
There are still some places available in this workshop, so if you are interested please contact a.crockford(a)nls.uk<mailto:a.crockford@nls.uk> to reserve a place. More details about the event are available here: https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Working_with_Wikimedia_workshop,_Edinburgh
Please feel free to share this information with colleagues working in galleries, libraries, archives and museums near Edinburgh who might find the event of interest.
Hope to see you there!

Yes it did get very messy. As I remember it, cards were actually printed
for some volunteers before it had been approved by the board, and then
"recalled". The cost seemed very high, and Wikipediocracy (or was it WR
then) took a keen interest. But I think it remains a useful idea, so
long as: the people getting them and "job titles" used are clear and
agreed, perhaps there is a light agreement of the type Stevie mentioned
to limit WMUK liability, and the cost is reasonable (even if it means
square corners). I think there should be a page on the WMUK site
clarifying the status of those using them, for outsiders to see and
verify who they've been talking to etc.

Hi all,
As everyone is aware, Results of general elections are going to be
announced on 16th of this month.
In this regard, we are planning for a Wikidata labelathon for Indian
parliamentarians who are declared win - constituency wise in these
elections.
This will involve creating label for each parliamentarian and a description
that says which constituency, state and party that politician is from.
This will ensure that each language has at least a single line about each
of the elected public representatives.
Those who are interested, please fill in your names in the event page here
:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge/Events/Indian_Par…
This project would run for 2 month period, and ensure that this labeling
happens in all Indian languages.
For any other help, please feel free to contact.

I would like to propose two simple expectations for moderation of this list:
1. Where a post is rejected from a regular contributor some feedback
is given to explain what the issue is.
2. An appeal process is defined.
In the current set up, I am seeing email disappear without
explanation. It is not a process that encourages reconciliation or
improvement, just disenfranchisement.

Application for scholarship support to attend this year Wikimania is now
open. Wikimania 2014, the 10th annual international conference of the
Wikimedia movement, is being held between 6 and 10 August 2014. The venue
is in the Barbican Centre <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbican_Centre>,
London.
To qualify for assistance, you must either be based in the UK or a UK
citizen living abroad, and agree to produce a public report (which may be
published on the Wikimedia UK blog and/or in our newsletters) summarising
the key things that you have taken from the event. Applications may be made
for the cost of conference registration, accommodation for the duration of
Wikimania, and/or travel within the UK.
Application should be made by completing this application
form<http://bit.ly/wm2014scholar>.
The deadline for application is Sunday 8 June. After the deadline, we will
be in touch to offer scholarships as soon as possible. Anyone UK residents
who have previously made an application for scholarship through the
Wikimedia Foundation process and had agreed to share their application
details with their local chapter need not apply again.

Katie

Reading about the making of videos at Eurovison:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/05/10/no-interviews-except-wikipedia-docume…
I was stuck by the positive response to the "Wikiepdia
representative", not least engendered by his use of a branded
microphone windshield (see third picture in the above post) [*].
Similarly, my local branch of OpenStreetMap issues mappers with
branded high-viz vests; these often reassure the public (or at least
facilitate the opening of a discussion), when someone is walking down
their road noting house numbers and other features.
I suggest some thought is given to providing WMUK volunteers who are
likely to attend press calls and related events with something to
identify them in a crowd; this could include microphone windshields,
tabards, baseball caps, or perhaps something else.
I strongly suggest that the primary brand used should be Wikipedia,
with Wikimedia and WMUK (or WikiNews or whatever) beings secondary, as
it is the former which the lay public recognise most readily; and
which elicits the positive response referred to above.
On a related note, are we ever going to get the promised business cards?
[*] That windshied is far too big for use on the Zoom H1 which I use
for the voice project, but something smaller would be useful.

2. When providing business cards for *one person* costs £100
(I think past actual costs have been quite a bit higher), this looks like
an expensive way to invest the donor's money in open
knowledge. In the past Harry printed out his own versions, this may
be a suitable thing to do so that if a volunteer just needs some
cards for one event, they don't end up with a box of 1,000 business
cards, 90% of which will end up in paper recycling. One past solution
has been standard charity business cards with no specific name, that
may still be the most economic and least contentious option. If a
volunteer uses up their first 200 cards, it might be worth getting
their own named set printed. This policy could equally apply to
trustees... always good to set responsive procedures for efficiency.
It is all in the page archives, both from the old version of the Water
cooler and in board minutes talk pages, along with some posts to this
email list, I think. It has also been a topic of discussion on
Wikipediocracy several times - something that you may want to safely
ignore, but considering that apparently the new WMF CEO's parter is
active there right now, many might be following it. I'm sure someone
can track this stuff down if you wished to review it.

Dear all,
I am working on a set of proposed amends to standard policies covering how
the charity treats data that may be of interest.
I posted about this yesterday in the Engine room, and am now sharing here
in case anyone didn't see it but would like to contribute.
I will aim to 'fix' the proposed amends after discussion by next Friday
(23rd) with a caveat that if anything is seen to be really complex or
controversial I will hold off on recommending that in time for the board
meeting in June, and we can propose it to them later after fuller
discussion.
A lot of this is pretty non-controversial and standard, but I am conscious
that we do have some people who are very knowledgeable in our community and
welcome your input as ever - thank you!
See my post and links
