Hello everyone,
At the Wikimedia Conference I have had a meeting with Wikimedia Bangladesh.
We discussed the possibility of working together to develop a project
focusing on the Bengali Wikipedia.
It is early days but we would love for you to get involved in supporting a
collaboration and sharing ideas.
I have created a page on the Wikimedia UK wiki for interested peeps to
sketch out some ideas and perhaps develop them further. The page has also
been shared with Wikimedia Bangladesh and we are hopefully of creating
something interesting, useful and fun.
The page is here -
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Wikimedia_UK_and_Wikimedia_Bangladesh_collabo…
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

I have made a proposal to relax the scope of the Commons so-called Precautionary principle to allow the site to host more of the locally public domain files that are being deleted because of the US URAA law, and also to keep more photos that have freedom of panorama in their home country but which might (or might not) be copyright-protected in the US.
This proposal comes out of an extremely long and complicated argument about copyright, which you don't necessarily need to get into, but it is an attempt to allow Commons to host more media files while at the same time ensuring that the site remains fully legal under US law. We can legally take a much more nuanced position than 'Definitely Free' or 'Definitely Unfree', which is pretty much what we do at present.
Some editors have suggested ignoring US law, which the WMF simply cannot allow to happen, and this is an attempt to allow us to keep more non-US Public Domain material while still remaining on the right side of US law.
Put simply, do you agree that Commons should aim to host more files that are public domain in their home country even if they *might* still be copyright-protected in the US?

Hi everyone,
Wikimedia UK are looking for two people to act as Wikimania support
contractors <https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Wikimania_support_contractor>.
It's a fixed term contract at London living wage to support Wikimania.
Check out the page for details of what the post involves and how to apply.

Hello everyone,
I'm very happy to report that there is now a Trademark Agreement in place
between Wikimedia UK and Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.
Thank you to the Trademarks team at the WMF for their work in making this
happen. Thanks also to Jon Davies and Michael Maggs for their input, and to
Mike Peel for highlighting the need.
You can see the agreement at
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/File:WMUK_and_WMF_trademark_agreement.pdf
If you have any questions about this please do let me know.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

As a four-time[1] Wikipedian-in-Residence (indeed, as WMUK's first
Wikipedian-in-Residence), I would be interested to know more about the
"Wikipedian-in-Residence summit", which was apparently held by WMUK
yesterday.
I don't seem to be able to find anything on the wiki, not even an event listing.
[1] More , if you count short stints under other titles.

Oh dear, I seem to have started this by referring flippantly to the
meeting as a "summit" in an email to Ed Saperia about the early-June
Barbican event, which I cc'd to Andy as he has signed up on the page for
that. The term was entirely my own invention for that email, and not
used by anyone before or during the event. I must say I assumed during
the meeting, without asking, that Andy had been invited but couldn't
make it. I think we would have benefited from his presence. The
meeting did not cover Train the Trainers in much detail at all (while I
was there; I missed the start), except in terms of talking about the
trainers and helpers available to WiR's for training events.
It was a useful SWOT-based discussion on the issues we all face, sharing
experiences.
Sorry to have stirred all this up.

Thanks for that explanation. Could you provide a link to the review
meetings that were held in advance of designing the survey?
If this was a model for the WIR review, then I presume that as a Lead
Trainer I was invited to contribute to that stage, not just the
general satisfaction survey that is completed by both unpaid
volunteers and paid volunteers.
