A big welcome to D'Arcy who has started as an Interim CEO at WMUK. I am
finishing up jobs that make more sense for me up until the New Year while
D'Arcy is quickly getting his feet under the table. He is an experiecned
CEO with specialist experience in being an interim CEO. To quote his
Linkedin biography:
I was educated at Douai Abbey ( a community of monks of the English
Benedictine Congregation ), the Berkshire College of Agriculture and
Cranfield University. I spent about eight years working in marketing and
business development. In 1993 I went out to the independent Kingdom of
Tonga in the South Pacific with VSO. This experience led me to work in 32
countries around the world from Africa, the Far East, Europe, the former
Soviet Union, and the USA. I am passionate about professionalism within the
voluntary sector and believe that the leadership within the sector is key
to this change. I am active within the sector and amongst other things I am
the founder of the Corporate Social Partnership and a trustee for the Small
Charities Coalition. I am a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing,
a member of various third sector institutes, the IoD, and a school governor.
I am sure he will be keen to met members of the community. You can email
him on darcy.myers(a)wikimedia.org.uk

Hi all,
The Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) has published its recommendations
several days early
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/FDC_portal/FDC_recommendations/2…
Whilst this means a reduction of funding for Wikimedia UK, having the
information a week before our Volunteer Strategy Gathering is certainly
helpful.
Wikimedia UK is keen to ensure as many of our volunteers as possible
participate in this gathering, and so is willing to cover reasonable
volunteer travelling expenses and accommodation where appropriate.
The gathering will be in Birmingham (see details here
<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Volunteer_Strategy_Gathering/November_2014>),
with a further gathering planned for the end of February.
In light of Jon Davies' resignation and the initiation of a process to
choose a new permanent CEO in the New Year, this gathering is likely to be
of pivotal significance. With the publication of the FDC recommendations,
the discussions will take place with the benefit of a better understanding
of the financial environment in which WIkimedia Uk will find itself.
all the best

Dear all,
Would you like to go on a 'behind the scenes' tour of the Victorian railway
works in Eastleigh, Hampshire?
We have just heard from Marek69 that the attendees at this Sunday's meetup
in Eastleigh <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/English_South_Coast_1>will
have the opportunity of a free tour of the Eastleigh Railway works.
Photography allowed except for certain exhibits. We already have a category
on Commons <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Eastleigh_Works>.

Hello all,
The Great British Public Toilet Map [was launched yesterday] providing
details of over 8,000 public toilets in the UK including council
facilities, train stations, community toilet schemes as well as
shopping centres and libraries.
An alarming finding from the research by Royal College of Art Helen
Hamlyn Centre for Design, is just how few public toilets are now
available."

Hello all,
I wanted to highlight to those of you that missed it that the WMF has put a
call out for volunteers to act as a part of the grants advisory committee -
the deadline is the 30th December.
This is a really interesting role within the movement, scrutinizing
applications for project funding. You would get to review everything from
engagement events, to research proposals to software projects - you might
end up approving a pilot that turns into the next Wikidata or
WikiLovesMonuments.
I would be happy to talk to and encourage any UK based wikimedian volunteer
who is interested and would like to chat more about this type of movement
role as it would be great to get more members of our community involved who
could perhaps help engage more UK contributors in grant applications. Its
also fantastic stuff to have on a CV as a volunteer.
The criteria for candidates are as follows:
*Mandatory*:
1. Experience with the Wikimedia movement and at least one Wikimedia
project <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_projects>.
2. Ability to edit basic wiki-markup (grant proposal discussions are
largely conducted on Meta).
3. Understanding of diversity, including cultural, linguistic, and
gender differences. Reasonable facility with English, for reviewing and
discussing grant proposals.
4. Experience with programmatic or project-based work, e.g. editor
engagement, outreach, events, partnerships, research, education.
5. Have a track record of constructive engagement in community
discussions and an orientation toward collaborative problem solving.
6. Ability to actively engage in the review process at least once every
2 months. Members who have not engaged for at least two months will be
asked privately if they're still interested in serving on the GAC. GAC
membership of those who do not step down but who remain inactive for
another month will expire.
*Preferable*:
1. Experience leading, coordinating, or managing projects with an
intended on-wiki impact.
2. Experience applying for grants or working in grants programs (in the
Wikimedia, academic, or wider non-profit world).
3. Experience handling externally provided money and working with and
within budgets, preferably in a non-profit context.
4. Experience with organizational issues, including governance, due
diligence, accountability processes, auditing, and finance.
5. Ability to read and write in multiple languages.

Hello Everyone!
We're sending out another call for new Grant Advisory Committee (GAC)
members!
The GAC are community volunteers who are explicitly invited[1] to review
and evaluate grant proposals made in the Wikimedia Foundation Project and
Event Grants Program[2], and offer advice to both grant applicants and the
Foundation.
Read all about it on the Candidates page[3]. The deadline for signing up
for this round is December 30, 2014, so be sure to step forward before
then. New members will be inducted by the middle of January 2015.
Please help this message reach as many people as possible, by relaying it
to appropriate lists and village pumps.
And many thanks to our current and former GAC members[4]!
Cheers,
Alex

Morning,
Fasthost are currently experiencing a major network outage that means they cannot serve DNS queries. Unfortunately, they are our Domain/DNS provider! As a result, you will find that our websites are not accessible this morning. It may also affect email addresses.
Unfortunately there is nothing I can do; I have messages Fasthost on twitter but that is the only avenue for contact I have because their own site is down :(
I will update you as I hear more!
Cheers,
Tom

Hello everyone,
I've been asked to speak at an event next week and one of the topics will
be explaining how releasing content under open licences via Wikimedia
projects increases audiences for cultural institutions.
We have lots of those, of course, but one of the themes is the First World
War. Does anyone know of any digitisation projects related to the conflict
that I might point to as examples?
Thank you for any help!
