Wiki Loves Monuments deadline rapidly approaching

Hi all, Just a reminder to anyone with photographs of (Grade I / Grade II* / Category A / Grade A / Grade B+) listed buildings hanging around on your hard drives, now is the time to upload them. The easiest way to do this is to find each building's listing on Wikipedia (e.g. [1]), and follow the upload link there. Even if you took the photographs ages ago, they will still qualify for Wiki Loves Monuments, the world's largest photography competition -- assuming you upload them before midnight. Why participate in Wiki Loves Monuments rather than upload them, say, next week? * Your photographs can win prizes * You'll be helping make this year's WLM the largest ever (14,000 more uploads needed!) Open House 10th of December

WMUK Bid for 2014-15

Our application<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/FDC_portal/Proposals/2013-2014_round1/WMUK/…>to the FDC (the funding committee of the Wikimedia Foundation) for next year has now been submitted. Thanks to everyone who helped. It is based on the board's agreed budget and contains quite a bit of detail. It is however not carved in stone. We will have a great deal of flexibility within our programmes and we will be asking the community where our emphasis should be as we plan the work for next year. I hope you find it interesting. Welsh language Wikipedia update

All, Notifications (AKA 'Echo'), will be going live on the Welsh language Wikipedia on 8 October 2013. You can read more about it at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Notifications - it's already live on the English project. Scots, Gàidhlig and other languages are apparently pencilled in for November. We are happy to juggle the date to suit work and school diaries, so please do give feedback on the page if October is no good for you. This session applies to any Wikimedia project, so if you want to create an interesting weekly analysis of Wikipedia articles in multiple languages, fancy creating a super house-keeping bot for the Welsh Wiktionary or want to reliably upload and categorize 100,000 images to Commons without protests from the regulars, these are all good cases to discuss. Python gives you the (free) tools to pull in data from any internet source, so in the field of open knowledge these techniques are not limited to Wikimedia projects (I used the same methods to pull metadata from the Ministry of Defense API and the XenoCanto birdsong API). I know from past pub discussions that Roger always wanted to do some bot scripting, Andy could do with smarter ways of batch processing audio files and that Rich has and endless wealth of experience to share. Photographer help needed for the Wiki Loves Monuments competition in the UK

Hi all. I have a couple of requests, directed particularly to the photographers amongst you. 1. Enter photos into the Wiki Loves Monuments competition As some list subscribers may may know, I'm organizing the Wiki Loves Monuments competition in the UK. Although we have received over 8000 UK entries so far, the majority of those have probably been taken by users who are more interested in Wikipedia than in photography, and we are in need of some more high-quality entries from talented photographers. If you have any nice photos of UK listed buildings in your portfolio (for example from a previous UK holiday) please could you look them out and submit some entries? The website is at http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk/, and the last date for submissions is midnight UK time on 30th September (next Monday). If you have images taken outside the UK, they can be entered via this page. 2. Help with pre-screening of the competition entries To avoid overloading the three-person UK jury with 10,000+ images to be judged, I'm looking to recruit around 20-30 volunteers who can help with some pre-screening to eliminate entries that have no prospect of winning one of the top 10 prizes. We have an online jury tool for that purpose, and all you need to do is to click through one day's worth of entries and quickly mark those that the judges don't need to see. No complicated scoring or judging ability is needed - just the ability to separate a potential prizewinner from the obviously lower-quality entries. For consistency, there will be two people independently reviewing each image. The work involved would be a minimum of one hour, to a maximum of 10, and would need to be done over the next two weeks. It would be fantastic if a good number of people from these mailing lists could help out. You can enter the competition as well as help with the pre-screening, as you wouldn't be asked to pre-screen your own images. Thanks for anything you can do.
