Hello everyone,
As you probably know Wikimedia UK has been developing a Virtual Learning
Environment (VLE) to teach people about Wikipedia. Progress is going well
and we'd like to invite you to a workshop day on Saturday 9 November at the
Wikimedia UK offices in London.
The workshop will highlight the features of the VLE, look at how we can
make good use of the tool, seek community involvement in the content,
maintenance and localisation of the tool. Lunch will be provided on the day
and I'm hoping very much to see you there. Please do feel free to drop me a
line with any questions.
If you'd like to attend please do let me know so I can keep track of
numbers.
Thanks and regards,
Stevie

Hi folks,
As part of Wiki Loves Monuments, I'm organising a one-day photography contest in Chester on 7 September. The aim is fairly simple - to get good-quality photographs of some of Chester's most important listed buildings. Contestants will be given a target list and will have most of the day to take photographs before returning to the venue to start uploading. Chester is an incredibly beautiful city with some truly unique buildings, so nobody should be short of something to photograph!
The aim is for the event to be a fun day out for experienced Wikipedians and newbies alike, so of course I need people to come and take some photos! I also need some experienced editors to come and help the less experienced through the upload process and generally be on-hand just in case.
For more information, including a link to the (very simple) registration form, please see http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Takes_Chester. Please feel free to share with anyone you think might be interested.
If you're willing to assist others with uploading, please also email me off-list.
Thanks,

I have around an hour of audio from one of Tony Benn's appearances up
here at the Fringe. Sadly, Real Work is leaving me with zero time to
transcribe that into anything I can work from.
I won't, publicly, share the link to that; but, if anyone is
interested in helping out, ping me. I have asked if the trailer for
the film - an "audio-biographical" as they label it - can be released
under a free license, which (with some hilarious confusion over
Wikinews versus WikiLeaks) was in-general agreed to.
I also have an open invite to get in touch with Tony's assistant Ruth,
should I be visiting London, to go one step further than Andy's
current suggestion of recording an audio intro of Wikipedia bio
article subjects, and capture a short video clip of Tony introducing
himself.
Any help making that happen would be greatly appreciated. Since - at
my request Tony spoke to his son Hilary, and got the photo currently
adorning his Wikipedia bio gifted from Hilary, there is also an
opportunity to request more images, from earlier in his political
life, be donated to Commons.
Tangentially related, I've run out of some of the brochures I had.
I've been leaving them lying around Fringe venues, and would like to
keep doing so. But, obviously, with a Wikinews leaflet in-addition to
all the Commons and Wikipedia stuff.
Someone in the office should have my mobile number, please reach out
to me as I'm ridiculously busy with work.

Good morning all!
Members of Wikimedia UK will already have received a copy of our annual
accounts, but for those of you who aren't members, you'll find a copy of
our audited annual accounts at

They will be uploaded to Companies House and the Charity Commission over
the coming weeks. Please send any questions to myself, or leave them on the
talk page for the file.

Hi all,
For those who haven't been following the progress of the WLM competition to date, we have a small group of dedicated volunteers and staff who are working hard to ensure that the UK's first contribution to the world's largest photographic competition goes without a hitch. The organizational site is at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013_in_the_…
We also have a nice external competition website to attract competitors (many of whom will not be Wiki savvy, and will be new contributors & editors) at http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk/
We are expecting this competition to be quite a big deal, and the staff at WMUK have been busy making arrangement for publicity as well as helping out with the lists. We hope to get press notices and image spreads in the Metro, which publishes in Bath, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Newcastle and Sheffield, as well as in The Times (thanks Stevie). The high-profile nature of the competition has been strengthened by the agreement of Steve Cole ABIPP, Head of Photography at English Heritage, to join the national judging panel (jury) (thanks Richard N.)
The WLM volunteers will do everything they can to make sure the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland lists are in a good state on the English Wikipedia before the start of the national and international competitions - September 1st is just three weeks away now. We are all very aware that the deadline is looming, and that a quite a lot of work still remains to be done. Everyone is working as fast as they can and due to the rapidly approaching deadline it appears that unfortunately a few errors have slipped through. Really, we need more people to help out.
There is a particular need for editors who are experienced with bots or scripts to pitch in now, not only to help fix some of the errors, but also to help put up the remainder of the listed building data using the standard WLM templates. If you can help in any way, please make yourself known to the WLM team, either via my talk page, or by adding your name to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013_in_the_….
If you can actively help now, you should also, please, sign up to the Wiki Loves Monuments UK mailing list (link below), where you can obtain detailed information. You can see the current status of the data uploads by going to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013_in_the_…. You can see there, for example, that we still need someone to deal with the uploading of almost all of the Scottish data. We can provide structured lists of data for those who can help with this.
If you can't help with bot work, but are able to contribute by tidying up or correcting the WP lists for your area, that would still be very much appreciated. You can get to the lists by going via one of the following Wikipedia links:
Listed buildings in England
Listed buildings in Scotland
Listed buildings in Wales
Listed buildings in Northern Ireland
The best place to report systematic list errors, to ensure that the WLM volunteers see them, is not on this email thread, but rather at the main WLM-UK help desk, which you can find at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2013_in_the_…
Given the fact that the competition will be starting in just three weeks time (whether the UK team is are ready or not!), I would ask that editors do not make any radical changes to the Wikipedia lists at this stage which could inadvertently destroy the competition. In particular, please do not make mass reverts, unless you are able to put everything back correctly, and please do not remove or change the WLM template structure. This is essential for the automated upload tool to work properly, and also for the WLM international team to ensure that the data gets correctly harvested and copied into the worldwide Wiki Monuments Database.
After the competition has finished, at the end of September, would be a good time for the community to discuss - if desired - any possible template improvements to the way in which the UK data is standardized and displayed.
Thanks for bearing with us and for helping out if you can.
Michael

I'm concerned that good-faith edits (hundreds of them) by one user,
relating to WikiLovesMonumnts in the UK, have i) used date templates
where they're not appropriate and ii) lost lots of existing wikilinks,
including disambiguation, which other editors are now being asked to
replace. Please see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:UK_Wikipedians%27_notice_board#…
for examples and discussion.
We may need a mass revert (after which the edits can be reinstated in
better shape); or a bot to do cleanup.

EduWiki Conference 2013 - Call for proposals
==============================================*
*Wikimedia UK's second annual EduWiki conference will take place in Cardiff
on 1 and 2 November 2013. *
A recent white paper from TurnItIn, the online plagiarism-prevention
service used widely across higher education in the UK, claims that
"Wikipedia has an outsized presence as a content source for student
writing". [1] This study is based on an analysis of over 112 million
content matches from 28 million student papers submitted to TurnItIn
between July 2011 and June 2012. 11% of these content matches are from
Wikipedia. However, the same report is quick to explain that Wikipedia has
academic merit in terms of educational value. TurnItIn's recommendation is
to "educate students that the true value of Wikipedia is to provide a
curated summary on a topic, and that they should follow the sources and
citations at the bottom of Wikipedia entries to verify the accuracy of the
information and to uncover primary source material" [2].
Wikmedia UK is now inviting proposals for papers, presentation,
provocations and/or posters, especially ones addressing the Wikipedia
problem highlighted by the TurnItIn white paper. Proposal for panels and
roundtable discussions from groups of three or four participants are also
welcome.
Indicative topics include, but are not limited to:
* Wikipedia belongs in Education, including Higher Education
* Wikipedia's academic merit and educational value
* Examples of using Wikipedia in the high school, college or university
classroom
* Ways to deter university students from plagiarizing Wikipedia
* Going beyond Wikipedia by engaging with any of the other major Wikimedia
projects: Wikibooks, Wikispecies, Wikiquote, Wikinews, Wikisource,
Wikiversity, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons, among others.
*Email your proposal (including an abstract of up to 200 words) to
education(a)wikimedia.org.uk by Monday 26 August 2013. All proposals should
also include a brief bio (around 50 words).
Queries about the conference or any other aspect of Wikimedia UK's
Education activities can be sent directly to WMUK's Education Organiser
