Dear all,
In January it was announced that Wikimedia UK had reached an agreement with
Roger Bamkin and Terence Eden to accept the donation of the intellectual
property rights of QRpedia to Wikimedia UK. WMUK are choosing to do this
via a company called Cultural Outreach limited.
This will mean that in future the site qrpedia.org will be managed by
Cultural Outreach Ltd and governed by the Wikimedia UK Website Privacy
Policy.
Both the domains qrpedia.org and qrwp.org were transferred to the registrar
maintained by Cultural Outreach Ltd today. This is a notice that the server
hosting for the sites will be changed at 22:00 on Sunday 22nd December.
Users should not notice any difference, however there is the very slight
chance that in some cases QR codes may not work for short periods during
the switch.
If you experience a problem you can report it by emailing
Tech(a)wikimedia.org.uk or by logging a bug at the Wikimedia UK install of
bugzilla (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org.uk/)

Hi,
I think this is very interesting.
Based in Tower Hamlets we have in mind the effects of the air raids here:
http://www.ideastore.co.uk/local-history-online-exhibitions-upper-north-str…
Not so much on Wikipedia yet. See:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_strategic_bombing_during_World_War_I
I looked at the historical material about the bombing of Poplar some time
ago, it is clear there were quite divergent views about it locally, re the
deaths of our children locally:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poplar_Memorial.jpg
Certainly the views of Sylvia Pankhurst were quite distinct from that of
the local bishop, but this was a bit later in the war.
Perhaps you could share an outline of the project here (or perhaps it
would work better on wiki) as regards what is envisaged and how it can
link with other WWI experiences such as:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Yarmouthhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardment_of_Yarmouth_and_Lowestoft
and also in the context of:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._occupation_of_Veracruz_(1914)
I think if we are to live up to the conception of a NPOV we need to ensure
that any accessing of local material is put in the broader context of the
entire global context of the First World War.
I think this is a great opportunity to develop international links and to
create opportunities to examine differing experiences in different
contexts.
all the best
Fabian

Public domain day is coming up
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Domain_Day
Probably not that significant from our POV since the gap between 1923 and
1943 is large enough that quite a lot of stuff won't be PD in the US. There
are also some slightly unfortunate cases.
Sergei Rachmaninoff and George Washington Carver are safe enough but Kermit
Roosevelt killed himself and I'm not sure we want to being up the case of
Richard Hillary.
Georges Dufrénoy and Camille Claudel were both natural causes but in
occupied France. No idea how Kristjan Raud died although age suggests
natural causes. Julius Brammer looks to have been natural causes but well
as a jew in Vichy France....
Cuthbert Bradley was probably natural causes and a fair amount of his work
is PD in the US so stand by for mass transfer to commons. James Clark
painted some stuff on the subject of WW1 so might be worth highlighting.
Forrest Crissey, Frederick Gordon Crosby, Tom Clough and Charles N.
Daniels are others worth looking into.
I guess we could try focusing on south America and neutral countries.
Teresa Brayton's (ROI) stuff hits the public domain this year.

Could any local Wikimedians get to this event, at Horsmonden, TN12, on
4 Jan, with a view to photographing/ scanning the objects presented?
Probably best to liaise with the organisers,of so.

Wikimedia UK is committed to supporting our volunteers and to encourage
them to teach others how to edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, we
are running a weekend training workshop. This will take place on the
weekend of 1—2 February 2014 in Cardiff. This session is targeted at
volunteers in Wales and the immediate surrounding areas. We are especially
interested in editors of Wicipedia Cymraeg who work through the Welsh
language. However, both English and Welsh language editors on all Wikimedia
projects will be welcomed. The workshop itself will be delivered in English.
The workshop will be delivered by a professional training company and aims
to improve delegates’ abilities to deliver any training workshop. It’s
especially relevant to anybody who already runs Wikimedia-related training,
or is very interested in doing so in near future.
The workshop is a chance to:
- Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and
training skills
- Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when delivering
specific Wikipedia workshops
- Share your skills with others
- Help design a training programme that serves Wikimedia UK in the long
term.
The course will run from 9:30 am—6:30pm on Saturday and 9am—5pm on Sunday.
A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. We should also be able to
cover travel and accommodation if you let us know in advance.
If you are interested in attending, please indicate your commitment by
signing up on <
https://wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Training_the_Trainers/February_2014_event>.
Spaces are limited to 12 places.
If you are not able to attend this time but would like to take part in the
future, please add it to the event page or let me know by email to <
katie.chan(a)wikimedia.org.uk> — we will be offering more sessions in the
future.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I can also put you
in touch with past participants who will be able to share their experiences
with you.
Regards,
Katie

Hi all,
Further to previous, I am proud to announce that we UK Wikimedians now
have a 'Wikimedia in the UK' themed blog planet (aggregator), live at
[1].
One small issue: at the moment, we don't have many blogs aggregated on
it. So if you're British based, blog in any of the UK's many
languages, and have a blog category/tag (or the whole blog) dedicated
to your Wikimedia or Open Content activities, I'd love to hear from
you. It's a great way to make sure what you write gets the biggest
possible audience :)
Everyone else, why not bookmark the page or consolidate your existing
RSS subscriptions into one easy Planet subscription?
Best,
Harry

Hello everyone,
As you may have seen the board discussed the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group
EU at their meeting the weekend past.
The Group is a collection of Wikimedia chapters which is looking at ways to
improve the regulations regarding copyright in the EU. They have
provisionally agreed to sign a collective statement of intent which sets
out how the group will work. This is subject to a community discussion
period. Please do take a look at the statement
here<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Free_Knowledge_Advocacy_Group_EU_statement_of…>
and
get involved in the discussion
here<https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Talk:Free_Knowledge_Advocacy_Group_EU_stateme…>
.
So far the statement has been signed by WMFR, WMNL, WMSE and WMAT. It is
before the board of WMDE and other chapters are also currently discussing
the statement.
Thank you,
Stevie
