Huge dents have been made in the Geograph backlog since last year, thanks mainly to changes in HotCat and Cat-a-lot on Commons and the dedication of WereSpielChequers and others. Geograph is fantastic, but it has surprising gaps and the images are all low-res, so there's definitely room for Geogrpah and WLM to peacefully co-exist.

Hello everyone,
We don't often get to shout about the work of Wicipedia Cymraeg but today
is something of an exception. There's lots happening in Wales right now, so
with some help from Robin Owain, a prominent Wicipedian, we've put together
a blog post bringing you up to date with some of the excellent projects in
Wales.
You can read the blog post here <http://bit.ly/10Ep8zw>, in English and en

Hi Everyone,
As you may have noted, I am one of the two consultants WMUK took on to
manage their technical infrastructure. Over the last few months myself and
Emmanuel have been busy migrating to a new set of servers (see the progress
& details <http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/IT_Development>).
This weekend will be one of the final stages in the migration; moving email
and mailing lists to the new server.
If you have an @wikimedia.org.uk email address you may not be able to
access it for brief periods on Sunday the 20th. From Monday service will be
fully restored using the same details you have previously used.
* If you have email redirected to a third party/ personal account then
nothing will change, you may receive one or two duplicate emails
* If you use the WMUK webmail interface; the URL you use will not change,
however the client has been upgraded (hopefully you prefer it!) and will
look different. Your login details will not change. An additional webmail
option may be deployed in the coming weeks if there is demand.
* If you connect to email using POP3 or IMAP (e.g. via your phone or
desktop email client) these details will not change, although you may have
periods of not receiving mail on Sunday.
No email will be lost during this transition, though it may take a couple
of hours to synchronize the two servers.
At the same time I will also be migrating the Mailing lists - including
this one. Warning will be sent to this list an hour or so before the
migration begins. On Sunday you may experience periods of outage, or emails
that disappear never to reappear :)
*I recommend that you do not use the mailing list on Sunday.*
*
*
I am sorry for this in advance; I've taken over a month to design a process
which will cause the least disruption, however cannot guarantee 100%
disruption free.
If you have any questions, or are seeing difficulties in the next week or
so PLEASE GET IN TOUCH. I am available all day Sunday by email (
morton.thomas(a)googlemail.com) while I conduct the migration, and will be in
the office on Monday (so you can get me via phone there if it is urgent).
Regards,
Tom (ErrantX)
Hi all,
So, I'd like to put together a pack for new members, and I'd appreciate
your thoughts.

the UK Wiki - no time limit on comments yet. Please get involved - in
particular with writing an introduction for new members (many of you having
been so at one point) and a FAQ section.
Thanks all!

I remember the discussion (though I didn't remember the mention of the EH list).
I suppose we could try asking them nicely to give us the list in a more useful format, but even if we could import just the name of the building, it would be a start.

Harry,
I’m not so sure it would be easy to import the EH list by bot (particularly if you want to include location data etc). If you take a look at a previous discussion re WikiLovesMonuments last year (see http://wikimedia.7.n6.nabble.com/Why-is-UK-not-part-of-Wiki-loves-monuments… )I found some issues with the EH Spatial Data page which uses the ESRI format. Unless someone has cracked that it could be difficult.

Indeed (I'm responsible for the Grade Is, Grade II*s and Scheduled Monuments in Coventry). I was under the impression that some of the Grade Is by county were created by a bot or script, but (not knowing much about such things), I imagine it would be reasonably easy to import English Heritage's lists by bot.

There are twice as many Grade II* listed building as there are Grade I (around 20,000 and 10,000 respectively). Though each county has a list of Grade I listed buildings, corresponding lists for Grade II* are rare. Part of the issue may be because the lists can be very long and unwieldy. If this could be automated it would be very useful as the lists take a huge amount of time to put together by hand. Just ask Peter I. Vardy who wrote a few of the lists.

WMUK were ready to support WLM last year (I was the speaker at the last AGM) but the main problem was that no one stepped up to run it. To answer Harry's question on how much work is needed, & talked about it with several from the Netherlands & elsewhere, & had meetings about doing it in the UK, I'm pretty sure the short answer is - a lot! There is the possibility this year that the expanded office staff would be able to do much or nearly all of this (which we have not discussed), but otherwise we remain where we were a year ago. The Geograph issue has probably reduced the motivation for many, but is not an obstacle as such. The talks we had showed there were things Geograph is very good at (broad exterior shots) but others it was not (interiors, details of various kinds, special sorts of buildings ....) and we could skew the competition towards those. This year the AGM will be I think too late to start the process though, but if it is underway, then a progress report at the AGM would certainly be a good idea.

Morning Everyone,
As you might know, the 2013 conference will be in Lincoln, organised by the
Conference Committee with support from the office.
With the venue chosen, we now need to figure out an exciting programme. A
lot of this is in the planning stage and we will be releasing more
information later, however one of the first thing we need to do is figure
out some keynote speakers.
Later in the year we will be calling for papers and speakers from within
the community, right now we are focusing on finding one or two "big names"
who have something relevant to say.
As this is your concert we need to know who you want to hear from!
It could be anyone; from celerities, to politicians, to activists. We're
looking for intriguing suggestions, people with a unique perspective.
Some initial suggestions have been made, please please do suggest further
ideas here on the mailing list, by emailing myself or posting on this page:

Tom
Hello everyone,
I hope you're well.
I thought you might like to know that the Wikimedia Foundation has today
officially launched Wikivoyage, the free worldwide travel guide that anyone
can edit. It's the 12th official Wikimedia project and it's fittingly been
launched on Wikipedia's 12th birthday.
You can look at the site for yourself and get involved at
www.wikivoyage.organd you can see the WMF's blog post, republished on
our blog, at
