Dear All,
Today the second Wikimedia UK Intern has started working in our office.
Hasina will be joining us for the next 6-7 weeks. She is just getting her
email and account set up (hasina.khatun(a)wikimedia.org.uk), but in the
meantime here is a hello message from her:
*
My first day at Wikimedia and i have to say i am very excited. I have just
finished my role as a Gamesmaker during the Paralympics, which was a truely
amazing experience. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to be involved
in such a big event. I am now ready to be in work mode and keen to start my
internship with Wikimedia. *
*
I have just graduated this summer, I studied Politics at Middlesex
University and have had experience in many political institues such as
Parliament, The London Assembly and a Think Tank Called Demos. Having
experience from my past internships, I am really interested to see how
Wikimedia function as a charity and still have such a big impact on
spreading information just as successfully. I am looking forward to meeting
as many of you as possible - just this week I am planning to attend the
GLAMcamp in London. *
Best,
Daria

Was anyone approached to give the other side of the story? The article
lacks any explanation of our policy on reliable sources. It sounds like our
policy was followed correctly - the author's statement was accepted as
reliable only one it was published - but the BBC don't seem to have asked
what the policy is.
Dear all,
Just to let you know that Joscelyn has stepped down as a Trustee. We have
just put the following statement on the blog. Many thanks, Chris.
--
Wikimedia UK is sad to announce that Joscelyn Upendran has stepped down as
a Trustee.
"It is with great regret that I have accepted Joscelyn's resignation," said
Chris Keating, Chair of the Wikimedia UK Board of Trustees. "I would like
to thank her for her important contributions on the Board and look forward
to her continued involvement as a member of the charity.”
The constitution of Wikimedia UK allows the Board to co-opt a Trustee to
fill Joscelyn's place until the next AGM, when an election for 3 trustees
will be held. The Board will make a decision about how to proceed at its
next meeting on September 9th.
Having failed to find someone full time as a developer we are licking our
wounds and thinking of a plan 'c'.
Plan 'b' ,in the meantime, is to offer the support work for the fundraiser
as a tender to an individual or individuals who would like to take on the
work.
Our deadlines are super tight so expressions of interest by 5pm on the 14th
of September.
Please pass this around to anyone you know, mailing lists etc. I have
tried to post to wikitech-l but am not subscribed. Can someone make sure
this happens?

Many thanks

Hello Wikimedians,
I've bid a stall on behalf of the newly founded Cambridge University
Wikipedia Society [1][2] at the Cambridge University fresher's fair, 2-3
October. If you are around the area, it would be great if you can come and
help by staffing the stall for a few hours, especially if you're affiliated
to Cambridge University in some way!
The fair will run, roughly, from 9am to 7pm on the 2nd, and 9am to 4pm on
the 3rd; details are yet to be confirmed.[3] You certainly won't be
expected to stay the whole day unless you really want to! It'll be a
sign-up stall for the campus Wikipedia Society, and we'll give out
Wikimedia freebies at the event to promote awareness for Wikipedia-editing
and Wikimedia UK.
Please contact me if you're interested in helping, even if it's just a few
hours. Thanks! More details in the links below.

I recently raised this Commons page as an idea for Wikimedia UK to
support modest costs of international postage for items of obvious
benefit (and of reasonable quality) to the open knowledge projects.
This could be an interesting and relatively simple way for
inter-chapter collaboration to work at the small scale. See
<https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/2013_Activity_Plan/Ideas#International_Camera…>
for the UK proposal. I would encourage representatives from other
Chapters to make a comment on that ideas page, if you can imagine this
being a practical thing to get working.
Cheers,
Fae

Subject: Context A2 scanner for sale
To: MCG(a)jiscmail.ac.uk
The National Portrait Gallery have recently installed a brand new
photographic studio and no longer have use for their Contex CopyMate18 A2
scanner.
Rather than send the still working scanner for disposal we'd like to invite
offers from institutions who might be able to make use of it. Recommended
use would be digitising newspapers or other large documents. Monochrome
photographs required quite a bit of post-scanning processing in Photoshop
although full colour photographs were quite successful. The scanner did not
replace our A4 or A3 scanning equipment but was purchased to allow us to
digitise works larger than A3.
We are offering the CopyMate 18 scanner, usb & power cables, calibration
chart, all the scanner software (original cds and more recent downloads),
third party software and dongle from Colorado (this give us more accurate
colour output than the Contex software), plus electronic copies of
instruction manuals from Contex and basic installation, common errors and
maintenance instructions written in-house). The software is Windows only and
requires a PC with at least 3GB of RAM. The scanner was purchased in 2006
and used approximately once a week. It was last serviced, including new
lamps in April 2009 and has not been used for the last 4 months.
It measures approximately 130 x 65 x 20 cm and at least two people will be
needed to move it. It will need to be collected from the National Portrait
Gallery's administration building in Central London by the end of September.
The scanner will be sold as seen, no guarantee is given or implied. It will
be possible to view the scanner in action at the Gallery at the time of
collection. The contact details of the maintenance company we used for
servicing can be provided and we recommend that the scanner is serviced
after installing it in its final location.
Please email Emma Cavalier if you are interested.
Best regards
