Thanks for all the comments so far - really energising.
Here is a second draft into which I have tried to incorporate your comments.
This is an all encompassing plan which will in its implementation need
to be prioritised of course.

I'm really pleased to announce that our first World War I - themed
Editathon will be held on June 16th.
We're running this event in partnership with JISC, the UK Government's expert
body on digital technologies for education and research. It will be a great
opportunity to work closely with experts on military history from academia
to improve Wikipedia articles on this really important topic, and I hope it
will be a really successful start to Wikimedia UK's World War I Centenary
outreach work.
I'd encourage anyone with an interest in World War I and military history
in general to sign up, and please spread the word to anyone you know who's
interested in the subject!
Find out more, and sign up, here:

Not discussed in London last weekend!
I just wanted to note that although some of us are fanatical about
Wikimedia, there are other soap brands that wash just as white, if not
whiter. We had a discussion about this (a little) at the training event
on Friday 30th at The Geological Society. I recall that I made the case
for considering alternatives to Wikimedia Commons, as did at least one
participant.
Access to Archives http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/
ARCHON Directory http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archon/default.htm
Gordo
I've just noticed the list archives for this list (accessible via the link
in the footer) are restricted to subscribers only (although there is no
restriction on who can subscribe). Is that intentional and, if so, why?
I was talking earlier to the National Maritime Museum about organising an
editathon. They wanted to see what use we thought we could make of the
material in the archive collection, and whether Wikipedians would be up for
coming and making use of it. I am anticipating that this could prove very
popular, but if any of you are naval/maritime/biography/astronomy editors,
it would be really handy to have some specific examples of things we might
do to build the case for this event taking place. (And to answer the most
obvious question, we're currently discussing how much latitude we'd have to
digitise things there and then.)
Their archive catalogue is available here:
http://collections.rmg.co.uk/archive.html#!asearch - obviously we would
have access to the museum and its library as well.
Regards,
Chris
Just a note for the World War I buffs amongst you - there's quite an
interesting plan by Oxford University to crowdsource a livetweet of the
Battle of Arras. More info here: http://ww1centenary.oucs.ox.ac.uk/?p=253
I'm planning to take part and other Wikimedians would be very welcome.
You might notice that the organisers have taken a licensing approach of
putting the eventual resource they are creating from this initiative under
CC-BY-NC, but nevertheless encouraging participants to digitise their own
materials and put them on Commons. So that's 50% right ;-)
Chris
Please see the below if of interest to you UK-based Wikimedians.

Dear all,
Following up on the Wikimedia Foundation's Board resolution on Funds

work ahead, we are creating an Advisory Group which will begin work
very soon.
Information on the nomination process for the formation of the

(Starting a new thread separate from Chris's, to make clear that this
is a call to Wikimedia UK volunteers).
Hi all,
I've put up an explanation about our plans for a trainer-training event:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Train_the_Trainers_event
If you deliver training for Wikimedia UK, or are interested in doing
so in future, please read the above page *and sign up* for the
forthcoming weekend event. We haven't a specific date set yet: we'll
have a date and programme by the end of this month, so it would be
good to have a list of attendees by then as well.
If you're already an experienced trainer, please don't ignore this: we
need your expertise, and this is a way to get your skills officially
recognised.
Thanks,
