I've just noticed the list archives for this list (accessible via the link
in the footer) are restricted to subscribers only (although there is no
restriction on who can subscribe). Is that intentional and, if so, why?
I was talking earlier to the National Maritime Museum about organising an
editathon. They wanted to see what use we thought we could make of the
material in the archive collection, and whether Wikipedians would be up for
coming and making use of it. I am anticipating that this could prove very
popular, but if any of you are naval/maritime/biography/astronomy editors,
it would be really handy to have some specific examples of things we might
do to build the case for this event taking place. (And to answer the most
obvious question, we're currently discussing how much latitude we'd have to
digitise things there and then.)
Their archive catalogue is available here:
http://collections.rmg.co.uk/archive.html#!asearch - obviously we would
have access to the museum and its library as well.
Regards,
Chris
Just a note for the World War I buffs amongst you - there's quite an
interesting plan by Oxford University to crowdsource a livetweet of the
Battle of Arras. More info here: http://ww1centenary.oucs.ox.ac.uk/?p=253
I'm planning to take part and other Wikimedians would be very welcome.
You might notice that the organisers have taken a licensing approach of
putting the eventual resource they are creating from this initiative under
CC-BY-NC, but nevertheless encouraging participants to digitise their own
materials and put them on Commons. So that's 50% right ;-)

Those of you not on Foundation-l might be interested to see this post from

implications for the development of Wikimedia UK in future.

Subject: [Foundation-l] Board Resolutions from March 30th 2012
To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear members of the community,
After having discussed the final aspects of this today I would like to
announce the following three resolutions
1) Board of Trustees Voting Transparency: http://wikimediafoundation.**
org/wiki/Resolution:Board_of_**Trustees_Voting_Transparency<http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Board_of_Trustees_Voting_Tra…>
1) Fundraising 2012: http://wikimediafoundation.**org/wiki/Resolution:**

2) Funds Dissemination Committee: http://wikimediafoundation.**
org/wiki/Funds_Dissemination_**Committee<http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Funds_Dissemination_Committee>
For those of you who are currently in Berlin, we will have a 2 hour window
tomorrow to discuss this together, we invite you to send questions for this
session to Harel Cain (<harel.cain(a)gmail.com <mailto:harel.cain@gmail.com>>*
*) He will be moderating tomorrow's session which will be similar to the
Q&A session we had in Paris.
We are currently working on a Question and Answer document which we will
publish as soon as possible.
Although the decision has now been made, we have a large number of
challenges ahead of us and I hope that we as a movement will come together
to make the Funds Dissemination Committee a success by working with us to
come up with answers tot the questions that we still have and helping to
make it work!

Howdy y'all,
Would anyone be interested in helping out with our bid to hold Wikimania in
London in 2013?
We've got a couple of weeks to refine the bid page, and there's lots of
little areas that need attention... a fuller description of the venue, more
accommodation options, more information on travel in London, a section on
GLAM in London, things like that, and I'd be very grateful for any time you
might be able to put towards it. We have all the main things in place for
the conference, just a question of writing it all up now!
Here's the bid as it stands:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2013_bids/London
Here's some suggestions for things to do here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimania_2013_bids/London
Or another good way is to look at how things have been written up in the
competing bids, e.g.:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2013_bids/Hong_Kong
If you're interested, feel free to dive straight in or email
me<edsaperia(a)gmail.com>if you'd like to discuss the bid. I should also
be in #wikimania2013
tonight and tomorrow.

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and
registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with
hotel/hostel, just mention it in the registration form.
https://wmberlin.eventbrite.com/
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical
community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily
talking about Gadgets, the switch to Lua, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, with
lots of people who have not attended such events before. User
scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile,
structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we
want you to come!
Details: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Berlin_Hackathon_2012
Thanks to Wikimedia Germany for hosting and coordinating this event.
(Venue still to be determined.)

Dear all,
Wikimedia UK is planning to run the GLAM-WIKI Conference on Friday 14 - Saturday 15 September at the British Library in London. This is a global GLAM conference hosted by the UK chapter. We are linking with the British Library with the support of other chapters and the WMF in terms of volunteer support and scholarships. The intention is to attract Wikimedians to share their GLAM related experience and professionals to address the GLAM community. The idea of the day will be similar to the 2010 event (http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI_2010).
It would be great if you could join the discussions on how to shape the event. To get involved, please visit
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI-2012
Please have a look at the page and feel free to add your ideas! It's early stages of the planning and we are open to creative solutions.
You can also get in touch with us if you have any questions - please email fae(a)wikimedia.org.uk or daria.cybulska(a)wikimedia.org.uk. You can also reach the Wikimedia UK office on 0207 065 0990.

Hey all,
Some of you may be aware of the CREWE Facebook
group<https://www.facebook.com/groups/crewe.group/>;
which is a group of PR types interested in opening a dialogue with
Wikipedia over the current issues of COI and paid editing. There has been
interest in having a session for CREWE members to meet some Wikipedians,
discuss the issues, and learn about Wikipedia (and hopefully we could learn
something too).
The idea is very early stage at the moment; guaging interest from both
communities. I sent an email to Daria last night to see if the WMUK office
could assist.
But what sort of interest is there within the rest of the Chapter?
We are aiming for around May - probably a small group of representatives,
presentations from us and them, a Q&A/round table and probably a practical
session.
- Are there any dates in May to avoid?
- Anyone interested in attending/engaging?
- Venue ideas?
- Format ideas?
- Anything else I missed?
I'd love to have a broad spectrum of editors involved - perhaps 5 or so
(we're likely to have ~20 from CREWE) - so we can have a proper discussion.
I know even within the community there is disagreement on some of the
issues, and representing all of those (constructively) would be good.
Cheers,
Tom
