Dear all,
I've just posted some thoughts on our wiki about how we can update some of
our policies around Wikimedians in Residence and circumstances where we
might need volunteers to make declarations of interest. Do let me know what
you think, preferably on-wiki.

Dear Andreas
Francis Ingham is DG of the PRCA. Its fee-paying members include RLM
Finsbury (among other WPP companies), so, ultimately, it contributes to his
salary. Possible COI?

Note that per the linked page the session takes place in Oxford, on
Thursday 6 December, 2pm-5:30pm, though anyone assisting training would
need be there rather earlier, & there is talk of lunch.
John
Dear all,
Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research based in *Oxford* has contacted
Wikimedia UK with a request to have a introductory Wikipedia training run
for them on Thursday* 6 December*, 10am-4pm, London. After Doug Taylor's
presentation during AMRC workshop on 30 October 2012, one of the
participants approached us with an interest in Wikipedia training. The
staff most interested in participating in this training is the research
scientists from the organisation. There are about 10-15 people from the
charity that are interested in taking part in the event, most/all of these
would be newcomers to Wikipedia.
I have created a simple page with the details:

If you would like to help run this session, please do sign up on the page
or let me know. Especially local volunteers are encouraged to get involved.
You can also get in touch if you have any questions.
Many thanks

Over the last day or so, I've been working on putting together a new event in London, Operation Cowboy. The plan is for it to be the weekend after next, which is very soon, I know.
http://lanyrd.com/2012/cowboy-london/https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/London_OPC2012
Operation Cowboy is a plan for an all-night OpenStreetMap editathon (mapathon!) focussed around improving OpenStreetMap for the United States, an area OpenStreetMap is known to be not quite so good (compare San Francisco with London: on OpenStreetMap, damn near every pub, bar and shop in central London is on the map, in San Francisco, it's not nearly as good).
Though the best mapping we can do generally involves getting a GPS out and walking or cycling the streets yourself, there's plenty of work that can be done to improve OSM from your armchair.
You can read more about Operation Cowboy at:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Operation_Cowboy
Part of the point of the Operation Cowboy event is to be a place where Wikimedians and others who haven't played around with OpenStreetMap and want to learn can come along, learn how to set up an account and start editing. Though we'll use the US as the focus of the event, the skills people learn improving the US map will be applicable to improving the map for their local area in the UK.

All,
Andrew Gray and I met with the Imperial War Museum in London earlier this
week. They're the lead organisation for marking the 2014 WWI anniversary in
the UK, and they're very interested in cooperating with Wikimedia UK as
part of the program.
The main part of the discussion was their plans for a Wikipedian in
Residence - we're still working out the details (funding, reporting,
management etc), but they're planning to employ a Wikipedian in Residence
during 2013 or 2014, probably full-time for six months. They are keen to
treat it as an interpretative role - rather than focusing on working with
the collections, they really want to have someone content-oriented who'll
spend the time looking at WWI content on Wikipedia, seeing where it lacks,
and trying to organise ways to improve it, fill in gaps and draw together
duplicated topics. The post will hopefully also involve outreach to the
various (academic and non-academic) communities researching the war,
helping them collaborate with Wikipedia, and working to support the
existing community by providing sources, supporting material, etc. for
articles.
On the whole, it's a promising project - in many ways, almost a "historian
in residence on Wikipedia". As I say, the details are a bit fluid (notably
dates) but me and Andrew will try and keep you all informed of what's
happening as it goes forward. If you've any comments or suggestions, do let
me know!

I absolutely agree with Harry and Andreas that the newsletter should
reach beyond the chapter & list communities to the much larger group of
UK-based editors and readers. And donors, though they are supposed to
be getting their own version. We should always bear this in mind, and
encourage contributions from outside the existing r-l community, but
probably early numbers will concentrate UK news on chapter & meetup
affairs, as well as wider issues like the internet bill thingy. But the
main thing is to get one going. Obviously, from the chapter POV, the
newsletter should be a prime means of reaching out to the wider
community and recruiting active volunteers.
John
I this thats a very good idea :)
Its simple enough that even I could set up something to do that and if there is a desire to I would be happy to do the delivery.
