Hello all,
I see from the 2012 activity plan that there's a budget for a World
Wars project [1]. Is there a leader for this? An online presence?
I'd like to keep in touch with the project with focus on WWI so as to
get stuff done before the centenary. I actually read a heap of WWI
articles last year and no doubt did some wikignome-like edits along
the way. I'm not inclined to do social things like leaving the house
and talking to people, but anything that's computer-based I may be
persuaded to attend to for two or three hours a week. I can be
persuaded to invest in and read some books, although if the books were
to come out of the budget and then be placed in Wikimedia UKs hands
afterwards that would be preferable.
There is, of course, a MILHIST task force for each war. [2] [3]
If anyone's in charge of this, make yourself known and I shall follow
you for a bit and see what's up. I suggest whoever takes the lead
brings MILHIST on board as they are (I believe) a very successful
wikiproject with tons of experience and many featured and other high
quality articles to their name.

Just an FYI:
We have a Liverpool meetup in November, but it's currently only got one
attendee! For those of you nearby, the details are at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetup/Liverpool. Please sign up if you can!
The pub itself is in rather a fantastic building, and there are likely to
be some 'new wiki-recruits' turning up, as there's a WMUK event being held
during the day at the local University. I may make an appearance myself,
even though it's a bit of a distance to travel.
All the best,
Richard

Administrative activities
Board activities
We held an In-person executive board meeting on 18 September in Derby. Discussions focused on plans for our upcoming EGM (see below) and on the induction process for our new chief exec.
Draft reports from board members on their recent activities are available on the WMUK wiki in preparation for the next board meeting on 11 October.
Charitable status
Our application to be recognised as a charity by the UK's Charity Commission was significantly progressed this month. We will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting on 16 October 2011 to pass a special resolution to change our Objects to bring them in line with the Charity Commission's view of what a charity is. See our blog post on this subject for more information.
Fundraising
In preparation for the upcoming fundraiser, we have run a series of fundraising tests this month. The tests and their outcomes are described on meta.
We received £3624.73 in paypal donations from 272 donors this month - more than twice what we received in August. We have also started accepting monthly and quarterly Direct Debits: this month we recieved eight new Direct Debit instructions, averaging £22/month. All but one of these came in during the hour-long fundraising test on 28 September.
For more information please see our monthly fundraising report at Fundraising Report - Monthly Totals 2011.

I can understand the need for wiggle room in the next few months in order to
achieve charitable status. But I would suggest following this up at the next
AGM with a resolution that restricted subsequent changes to a General
meeting.
WSC
There is no need for this. As explained on the EGM talk page, the "wriggle room" is, and under the Companies Act only can be, just for this one occasion and covering only "such minor amendments to this Article as the Charity Commission may require for the purposes of registering Wiki UK Ltd as a charity". It has no ongoing effect. Furthermore the Companies Act does not allow any company to alter its constitution other than by a Special Resolution passed at a General Meeting or in written form.
To use the inevitable "blank cheque" metaphor, Sunday's resolution is a cheque that has an "up to" figure rather than being blank, and is a single cheque, not a chequebook.
In fact, as we had hoped, during the compulsory notice period for the Meeting we have received verbal agreement from the CC that the exact form of the clauses set out in the resolution will be ok with them, assuming their decision is to give us registered charity status. So no "minor changes" will be needed. But, again because of the Companies Act, we cannot change the text of the resolution to remove the "minor changes" bit. But once we are registered, which should certainly be before the next AGM, the "minor changes" power has lapsed, and in any case any different changes to the constitution (other articles for example) are not covered by it at any time.
I'll copy this exchange to the WMUK EGM talk page.

Hi,
If you have been involved in the UK GLAM programme and are committed
to helping in the future, the GLAMcamp Amsterdam workshop should be of
interest if you would like to learn from the experience of Wikimedians
from other countries delivering their own GLAM initiatives and have
the opportunity to share your own UK experience.
In the UK we have our own in-residence projects, negotiated new
partnerships, held workshops and edit-a-thons, run multilingual
challenges and experimented with QR codes. Don't think our work has
been unnoticed by our fellow Chapters, and this event is a chance to
use our bragging rights.
At the moment myself, Leutha and Rock Drum have added our names as
wishing to attend, please add yours so that Liam and WM-NL can start
adding you to their plans. Accommodation costs will be covered by
WM-NL and for suitable attendees travelling from the UK, reasonable
economy travel costs (such as the train) and some subsistence costs
will be reimbursed by WM-UK.
In terms of suitability, the event is targeted at those currently
involved in our GLAM programme with a story to share. We may limit
numbers depending on the level of response and may have to reject
applications from those without suitable experience. Drop me a note if
you have any questions.
Cheers,
Fae

Just a reminder about the EGM on Sunday;
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/EGM_2011
If everyone who's signed up comes along then we will (just) be quorate - so
if you've signed up, please do come - if you haven't then please either
appoint a proxy, or just turn up ;)
There was some debate over the fact that the resolution allows "minor
changes" to the proposed Object without a further EGM. We are now confident
that no such "minor changes" will be necessary - I'll leave others to go
into that in more depth though - and there will be a full update on the
progress of the charity application at the EGM, along with news from Jon
about our office :-)

Just read this BBC article
<http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15216513> where the correspondent
wanders around a Paris cemetery, smartphone in hand, searching the
internet for information about the people buried there. How much more
convenient if the graves of notable people were tastefully and
discretely marked with QRpedia codes. A Wikimedia UK collaboration
with Highgate Cemetery maybe?
