Hi all,
The current leaflet design for BLW is at:
http://www.mikepeel.net/temp/blwleaflet.pdf
The V&A version of this (the first 2 pages) needs to go to the
printers tomorrow morning, so any last-minute corrections/changes
sent to me in the next ~ 8 hours would be welcome...
Thanks,
Mike
Hi all,
I've just started the press release page for the Britain Loves
Wikipedia event at:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Press_releases/Britain_Loves_Wikipedia
This includes a whole host of cool information (at least in my
opinion) about the event - including a few details about the events
that will be happening next month, and the prizes that will be up for
grabs.
The release includes text written by myself and Steve Virgin. Any
help improving the release would be gratefully received. It will
hopefully go out on Sunday the 24th January.
The museums and events listed are confirmed: there are a number of
others that I'm waiting for confirmation on before adding to the
list. However, please don't spread the word too much about this press
release yet, as it needs to be checked by the museums involved before
it goes live fully.
If anyone is willing and able to help with Britain Loves Wikipedia,
please let me know. Specifically:
- We have a website in development - a wiki with some custom coding
for entering the competition - which needs text improving and
information adding, however it's currently password protected due to
some confidential information. I should be able to give access to
this to a few people, but the information cannot be distributed yet.
- A leaflet is also currently under development, but could do with
work on the design and the text. If anyone's interested in helping, I
can share the current design with them.
- We are also in need of more sponsors for prizes - we have a limited
number at the moment, but more is always better.
- From Sunday onwards we will also need help spreading the word about
the events.
If you can help with any of this, please get in touch with me as soon
as possible.
Thanks,
Mike
Apologies for the cross posting.
Wikimedia UK, the
UK chapter, is organising an event called Britan Loves Wikipedia
Britain Loves Wikipedia is a cultural event bring organised in
partnership between Wikimedia UK, the Collections Trust and the MLA
(Museums, Libraries, Archives Partnership) starting on January 31 which
will encourage members of the public to visit certain participating
museums around the UK and photograph certain exhibits and make those
photos available for use on Wikipedia, and other projects, through
Wikimedia Commons. There will then be various prizes given out based on
the pictures people produce. For this event, we need a logo. While we
are getting quotes to have a professionally produced logo made, we
would much prefer one produced by a member of the community. The
community has produced excellent logos in the past and we are sure it
will be able to provide us with one that is just as professional
looking as what we could get by paying an enormous amount for it. If
you would like to have a go, the brief is as follows:
* The logo must include the words ‘Britain Loves Wikipedia’
* The logo does not necessarily need to feature the Wikipedia globe
* The logo must work in black and white and colour
* The logo must not be year-specific
Unfortunately we have very limited time so deadlines for this project are as follows:
* Expression of Interest (and, ideally, a first draft of your idea or ideas) -- 12:00 midday UTC Thursday, January 21 2010
* Final Logo -- 23:59 UTC Sunday, January 24 2010
We
understand that that doesn't give you much time, and we're sorry we
didn't organise this sooner. Hopefully a few people can knock something
up in that time! If you want to have a go, please let us know by
following the link.

We are happy to announce that the board has decided to co-opt Thomas Dalton onto the board of trustees to replace Paul Williams who recently resigned. I'm sure Tom needs no introduction here: he currently serves as our Head of Fundraising and has been involved in the setting up of Wikimedia UK "v2" from the start. Tom, like the rest of the Board, will serve until the AGM in April when a new election will be held.
Regards,
Andrew Turvey
Secretary

Hi all,
The next board meeting, and the last of 2009, will be this evening
(Tuesday 29 December 2009) at 8.30-10.30pm GMT. The meeting will
primarily be via Skype, but we'll also be in #wikimedia-uk on IRC.
Everyone is more than welcome to attend the IRC session, and
participate in the discussion there. If you don't have an IRC client,
then you can connect using http://webchat.freenode.net/ .
The agenda is at http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetings/2009-12-29/Agenda
Board members + Tango: please post whether you can attend, and your
reports, to the agenda page. My thanks to those that have already
given their attendance and started their reports.
We're still trying to figure out the best way to hold board meetings
so that you all can be involved also; suggestions on how we could go
about this would be greatly appreciated. Note that you can always add
items to the agenda if you want them discussing, and we can also
connect you to the Skype conference for appropriate segments of the
meeting if you want.
Thanks,
Mike Peel
The fundraiser has now finished, so I thought I would let people know
how it went: Wikimedia UK raised a total of just over £85,000 (we may
have a little more from cheques and bank transfers that have yet to
arrive and/or be processed, but that won't be more than a few grand
tops). I consider that a complete success and am very pleased about
how our first ever fundraiser went. There were plenty of problems, as
one would expect, but they didn't get in the way of raising lots of
money. Most donations are being split with the Foundation, so we can
expect about £43,000 of unrestricted funds for Wikimedia UK to spend.
What happens with the WMF's share has yet to be determined. I intend
to write a full report on the fundraiser over the next few days (I aim
to have to finished in time to submit it to the board meeting on
Tuesday), that report will be made available on the chapter wiki. Just
to remind people - there is a page on the wiki for discussion of our
budget for this year, please do contribute there with thoughts about
how we should spend this money:

My thanks to everyone that donated and to everyone that helped me run
the fundraiser!

"The country’s 4,000 schools are to get free access to online
versions of the popular Encyclopedia Britannica and World Book as
part of an e-Learning initiative announced today."
... do you think we should offer to generously let them access
Wikipedia for free as well? We can even throw in the native language
version. ;-)
