Hi everyone,
This Thursday's office hours will feature Mike Godwin, the Wikimedia
Foundation's Legal Counsel. If you don't know Mike Godwin, you can
read about him at <http://enwp.org/Mike_Godwin>.
Office hours this Thursday are from 1600 to 1700 UTC (9:00AM to 10:00PM
PDT).
The IRC channel that will be hosting Mike's conversation will be
#wikimedia-office on the Freenode network.
If you do not have an IRC client, there are two ways you can come chat
using a web browser: First is using the Wikizine chat gateway at
<http://chatwikizine.memebot.com/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi>. Type a
nickname, select irc.freenode.net from the top menu and
#wikimedia-office from the following menu, then login to join.
Also, you can access Freenode by going to http://webchat.freenode.net/,
typing in the nickname of your choice and choosing wikimedia-office as
the channel. You may be prompted to click through a security warning.
It should be all right.
Please feel free to forward (and translate!) this email to any other
relevant email lists you happen to be on.

Hi all,
Would anyone be interested in trying a different type of wikimeet?
The idea would be to meet at a museum (presuming that I can get one
interested in hosting this), and have a meet-up with both wikimedians
and also museum people present. People would bring along laptops (or
use provided computers) to collaboratively work on articles related
to the museum or its collections, potentially with the aim of getting
at least one of them to GA quality (possibly FA quality?) by the end
of the day. It's a way of bringing experts on the objects, and
experts on Wikipedia (who also have an interest in the objects),
together and doing something very constructive.
It wouldn't be necessary to be a member - it would be open to all -
although people would probably need to sign up beforehand, and it
would likely be restricted to a certain number of people depending on
the capacity of the location (hence members would have priority).
This would be similar to the Backstage Pass that WMAU have done with
the PowerHouse Museum. I guess that the most appropriate place to try
this would be a museum in London on a different weekend from the
regular Wikimeets. I mooted the idea with a couple of people
yesterday at the London wikimeet, and the response seemed positive.
Obviously, before I start asking museums if they're interested, I
need to know whether sufficient numbers of people would be
interested. So please, reply to this email if you're interested
(either on the mailing list, or just to me if you want).
Thanks,
Mike

We have been approached by Wikimedia France who are organising, with the Wikimedia Foundation, a project meeting for the Usability Project in early November - see email below.
They have offered to fund the travel and accommodation of a UK-based person who is active in Wikimedia technology.
Is anyone on this list interested in attending? If so, please could you email me offlist with brief details of your technical experience on Wikimedia.
Many thanks

Subject: [Chapters] Multimedia Usability Project Meeting in France - Call for participation
Dear fellow chapter people,
Wikimedia France and the Wikimedia Foundation are organizing a meeting
in Paris on November 6-8, which is meant to find its place within the
Ford Grant about usability on Commons.
We have already about 25 participants confirmed, and we potentially
have a few spaces left. I would like to ask you if you knew of anyone
within the community who would be interested and useful to participate
in the meeting. Some of the chapters are already participating by
sending people, from the chapter and/or community (Wikimedia
Nederland, Wikimedia Polska, Wikimedia Australia, Wikimedia
Deutschland) and maybe we've missed people who are within your
"community of choice" and who would bring lots to the meeting.
...
You will find more info about the meeting here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Usability_Project_Meeting_France
Thank you for your help,
Best,
Delphine
Hi all,
The next WMUK board meeting will be at the London Wikimeet, at
Pendrel's Oak in Holborn, on the 11th October. You can find
information about the wikimeet at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/London_26
and the agenda for the board meeting is being developed at:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetings/2009-10-11/Agenda
The aim is to have a fairly informal meeting of the board - more of
an away day than a board meeting - to focus on the broad overview
rather than the day-to-day details, and also so that we can all get
to know each other better (IRC is very impersonal).
I'm not sure what the interaction will be with the wikimeet - whether
the two are effectively merged together, or completely seperate, or
somewhere in between. We (i.e., anyone that is present) will probably
decide on what's most suitable on the day. Thoughts/comments on this
would be greatly appreciated.
Board members: please confirm whether or not you'll be attending on
the agenda. Please also add points as you want to the agenda (that
applies generally, not just to board members).
The next IRC-based meeting will be on the 20th October, and will
focus on initiatives; the agenda for this is at:
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetings/2009-10-20/Agenda
Thanks,
Mike
Wikimedia Poland has just published their latest chapter report which contains two interesting ideas:
a) A "Wikicontest"micro grants scheme
b) A workshop for "strategy planning"
Could/should we do something similar for WMUK?
