So. Everyone is back from Wikimania and hopefully had a good time. Now... What about our next Meetup? We only need to figure out two things, this shouldn't take an act of Congress....
Date: I personally recommend the 23rd of August, which is exactly 1 month from today. We probably can't do any sooner. The 30th of August is out as that is a holiday weekend. After that we are in September. Maybe Sept 6th, if we can't do August? As noted before, we're never going to find a time that _everyone_ can make. HOPEFULLY, we can manage to make these meet ups more regular so it won't be such a big deal if someone can't make one. I'd really like to arrange for one every 2 months. We are in the tech capital of the world, we should be able to manage that little.
Location: There were previous mentions of the possibility of an office hosting us. Awesome if that can be done (But we'd need a set date). In the mean time, What other options do we have? It seems that we're more or less limited to anything within 1 mile (walk distance?) of BART.

Freebase (aka Metaweb) are happy to offer our space, but the later the date the better for us. We're having office renovations Aug 15-24 and we're not entirely convinced they won't run overtime, so if we went for Sep 6th we could do that. Otherwise, those dates probably wouldn't work for us.
K.
There is no requirement for the Meetup to be in August, other than my pushing for it. If you guys are willing to offer us a space provided we delay till Sept 6th (or later), Lets do it!

Either of those dates should work for me (Aug 23 or Sep 6).

I'm good with either date as well. September 6 seems like it would be a good opportunity for Freebase to show off their space to local Wikimedians. (Of course, this should not detract from regular meetup events).

Confirmed. September 6th at Freebase is cool.

Awesome! This may just work out for once!
Anyone have votes on the time? Just after lunch? just before dinner?
I say 1pm.

I have no problem with it being on Sept. 6. I think the best time to get it started is at 3p. Not too early or not too late.

Sounds good to me! I'll get things in order wrt the space.
A related question, since I haven't actually been to a previous Wikimedia meetup: are there presenters/talks/structured discussion, or is it unstructured? If structured, would people be interested in hearing about how Freebase uses Wikipedia? I know some of our guys have given talks about that before and might be interested in repeating them.

They've generally been very unstructured, but it might be nice to have at least a little structure. :)
A presentation to kick things off would I think be welcome.

Indeed. Generally all we do is introduce ourselves and then things devolve into chatter amongst one another. I'm all for adding a tiny bit of structure (by that I mean preplan some topics to talk about). If there is a short presentation, cool. Maybe talk about the next meetup and any other events going on in the Bay that might be of interest.
If anyone else has anything they'd like to suggest talking about. Lets hear it!

There was a very interesting lightning presentation at Wikimania about wikimeetups by Elke Weitzig. One of the points she put forth was the idea to elect the next meetup organizer at that meetup. Apparently it's been working quite well in Frankfurt :)

Interesting concept. Sounds like a good idea to me. For some reason these meetups have been next to impossible to get together without someone taking charge. People don't want consensus in their meetups, they want orders ^_^

On some future occasion, it would be fun to get an improvisational theater instructor in and run through some basic improv exercises.
Aside from being entertaining, I think they are a great small-scale demonstration of how order can spontaneously emerge through peer collaboration, with no central control or direction. Wikipedia obviously does quite a lot of that, but seeing it happen in person in minutes can give a different perspective.
If people are interested, let me know, and I'll ask my theater pals for recommendations. Getting somebody good might cost a bit, but I'd be glad to spring for that myself.

I promise, no singing.
The basic exercises are all incredibly easy and unthreatening, and involve no real performance as such. Anybody who's uncomfortable with them in the slightest can happily sit them out, but I expect that's unlikely.

Pat,
Presumably you subscribed yourself to the mailing list. You can unsubscribe anytime at: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-sf
This list is for people in the SF Bay area who edit Wikipedia or another Wikimedia project, or are otherwise involved with Wikimedia Foundation projects. We have meetups occasionally: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco
But unless you are involved in Wikipedia in some way, you will probably find them rather dull :)
