Hello Historico-curious,
*Do you often wonder what historical precedents have contributed to the
current housing crisis? How do World War II-era booms weave into current
displacement trends? What can the housing overcrowding, racism and
displacement of yesterday tell us about today’s realities?*
We’re excited to announce that the Prelinger Library has invited us to join
them at the end of July for an editathon on gentrification in San
Francisco! The *Prelinger Library* <http://www.prelingerlibrary.org/home/>
is a private collection of rare books, maps, zines and other ephemera held
by Rick and Megan Prelinger, both “appropriation-friendly” librarians.
*Rick* <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Prelinger> is well known in the
film archive world for his fascinating collections of American home movies
and for his work with the Internet Archive. *Megan*
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megan_Prelinger> is a cultural historian,
whose research and writing has ranged from artificial intelligence and
information design to city planning and social theory. Megan will be
curating a personalized collection of books and ephemera for us to use in
our research.
*RSVP*
Since the library study area is rather small, they have asked that we limit
participant numbers. We’ve been hearing a lot of strong interest in this
editathon, so in order to accommodate as many people as we can, we will be
splitting research times into three groups:
- Wednesday, July 23rd, 5-8:30 pm (6 spaces)
- Saturday, July 26th, noon-3pm (12 spaces)
- Saturday, July 26th, 3-6 pm (12 spaces)
Please RSVP either by emailing me privately or by adding your name to the
wiki event page: <*http://localwiki.net/sf/Gentrification_editathon
<http://localwiki.net/sf/Gentrification_editathon>*>. *Sign up for as many
times as you'd like to attend, but if the slots get filled you may be asked
to go to a less-popular time. Sorry! *:P
*LOCATION*
301 8th Street (near Folsom Street)
Room 215
San Francisco, CA
*FUN FACT*The library collection is organized in order of proximity,
starting with San Francisco and extending into outer space. :]
*Let me know if you have any questions!*
Take care,
Vicky
There is a new service developed by Ed Summers (@edsu) that tweets edits
made anonymously from the US Congress' IP range. The twitter handle is
@congressedits -- and it is very interesting! Especially from the point
of view of potential conflict of interest. But it also may give, over
time, a picture of how Washington-related information gets updated in WP.

Hi Bay Area wikifolk!
Please join us for a "Wikipedia Barn Raising" event focusing on Open
Educational Resources (OER). The Barn Raising will happen on Saturday July
19th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time, at the Oakland Impact Hub, at
2323 Broadway (near the 19th St. BART station). Lunch and refreshments will
be provided.
Since 2012, we've been working to strengthen Wikipedia's coverage of OER
and related topics. We've worked to build an international community around
this goal at conferences, through our online "Writing Wikipedia Articles"
(WIKISOO) course, and through the formation of WikiProject Open.
At the Barn Raising, we will focus on improving high-priority Wikipedia
articles, and consider ways to strengthen WikiProject Open as a resource
for staying connected, learning, and working together. We'll also welcome
online participants from around the world, with collaboration tools and
scheduled video check-ins.

OK I am convinced and will be happy if the crowd gets large enough to
make your concerns valid.
Conservatory sounds great can anyone change it to that? Only concern is
it takes quite a while to get to GGPark by public transit. But this is
OK I would have driven most probably anyway. Anyone want a ride from the
east bay? What about the Starting time?
FYI:There is a Lottery because the tables are mainly there for the
people who donate and only a small portion goes into the lottery or even
only the once which are not reserved by donors.

Knowledge should be free!
Hi all,
I made an attempt to get this going again by choosing a location this
way one does not have to choose between two awesome events. Although
some concerns have been risen since then that this could create more
trouble than its worth. I just want this to be an event to be enjoyable
for as many Wikimedians as possible. Please change the location and or
sign up with what you will be bringing.
Looking forward to next Sunday
