Dear all,
The San Francisco get together to celebrate Wikipedia's 10th anniversary is
finally coming together! Please join us for the (1st?) West Coast Wiki
Conference, on January 15, 2011 -- "Wikipedia Day". We'll have a
participant-created conference schedule all day, and will have some very
special guests and speakers including Ward Cunningham, developer of wiki
technology. We will celebrate wikis and Wikipedia, brainstorm on topics of
participant interest, and talk about what we imagine for the next 10 years
of Wikipedia and the collaborative web.
The conference will be in San Francisco, at the HUB SoMa: an art and
technology co-working space that features lots of reconfigurable space and
is very easily accessible by public transit. In the evening, we'll finish up
with a very special 10th anniversary party hosted by the Wikimedia
Foundation (details coming soon).
Tickets are $25, which covers lunch and morning snacks and the rent on the
conference space. You can reserve a spot through
EventBrite:http://wcwc2011.eventbrite.com/
<%20http://wcwc2011.eventbrite.com/%20>
There's only room for about 100 people, so please register today.
For more on the event, to volunteer (we need help!), or to start
brainstorming about program topics, please visit our wiki at
http://2011.westcoastwikicon.org.
This event is a volunteer-led, participant created effort brought to you by
members of the informal San Francisco Wikimedia meetup group. To get
involved in the meetup group, you can join our mailing list at:

Hi all,
Below are notes from the last West Coast Wikiconference Planning meeting.
Our next meeting is *tomorrow, Saturday 3rd, 11am, IRC*:
freenode#wikimedia-sf. Join us!
*Venue: *
We are running short on time and so decided to go for the HUB,
http://bayarea.the-hub.net/public/space__Hub%20SoMa.html which is an easier
and cheaper space to manage, and is close to the office. Eugene has now
reserved this space for us, and will confirm this with the HUB.
We also decided to go for a one day conference: any objections to this plan?
If a lot of people sign up we could go for two days instead.
*Party*
If we want a party on the evening of the 15th, we need a separate space to
hold this in. The WMF is going to help with this as well. The HUB is
available on the evening of the 16th if we'd rather have a party then
instead.
*Swag *
Steven Walling confirms that the WMF will be supplying boxes of 10th
anniversary swag, including t-shirts. (We should consider whether to put our
own t-shirts together as well).
*Money*
We need money for the venue, for food and a facilitator. Estimated cost is
$3K, without a party. We agreed to charge for tickets and to ask for
sponsors at a tiered rate: $1K, $500, $300. We are not going to bother with
a fiscal sponsor given the short notice; Phoebe offered to front the deposit
money.
We agreed to use Eventbrite to sell tickets. A ticket site is now set up:
http://wcwc2011.eventbrite.com/
We can change the cost if needed. If we all agree $25 seems reasonable (will
cover food and most of the venue costs) let's leave it as is, and people can
go ahead and register. Please speak up if you think $25 is too high/too
low/not the right amount.
*Speaker*
We talked about having a keynote speaker to kick things off. Suggestions
made:
* stewart brand
* ward cunningham
* john perry barlow
* joi ito (if he's in town)
* erin mckean
Please add to this list.
*To do: *
* Eugene to reserve HUB -- DONE; also confirm that we don't still have the
women's center reserved
* Phoebe to look into finances -- partially done (set up tickets site)
* Steven to talk to WMF people about a party
* Eugene to ask Stewart Brand if he's available
Next meeting: tomorrow, Saturday. Please join us!
-- Phoebe
In our Wikipedia 10th anniversary planning meeting this morning, we
decided to do a one day event rather than two. I checked to see if the
Hub was still available for either January 15 or 16. They're available
on both days. However, they're currently unavailable on the evening of
the 15th, although that event is not confirmed, so it may open up if
we want to do a party there. They're free on the evening of the 16th.
I'll put a hold on the space for now, so we should be good to go until
we figure out everything else. I'm also going to see if they'll be
willing to cut us a break as sponsors of the event. In the meantime, I
recommend that we seek an alternative site for the party (we discussed
some possibilities today).
Let me know if you have any thoughts. Phoebe will be sending out some
other notes on our meeting in the next few days.
