Hi all,
San Francisco has filled the slots, tentatively, for the 25 minute talks on
January 16
However, we still need lightning talks! Pharos has proposed that
Wikimedians introduce themselves and their proudest article:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Events/Hello_Wikipedia_-_My_Pr…
My guess is that these introductions will take less than a full hour, so if
you are interested in a lightning talk (roughly 2 to 5 minutes in length),
please sign up at the bottom of this page so that we can have lightning
talks as time allows:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Events/West_Coast
Suggestions for topics:
1. Your personal goals for 2016
2. What do you like about Wikipedia?
3. How can Wikipedia be better?
4. Wikipedia's relationship with ___
5. Successful projects
6. Current or recent research, technical developments, or outreach
activities
Thanks,
Pine
Hi SF Wikimedia folks,
Would you be interested in having a joint unconference with your northern
neighbors via video to celebrate Wikipedia Day weekend? We could have the
event on Saturday, January 16th or Sunday, January 17th.
This would be a nice opportunity for lightning talks as well as discussions
about software, Labs, GLAM, education, public policy, community health, and
everything else under the sun.
Please let me know if you're interested.

Subject: [Analytics] What Wikimedia Research is up to in the next quarter
To: Research into Wikimedia content and communities <
wiki-research-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, Wikimedia developers <
wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org, "A
mailing list for the Analytics Team at WMF and everybody who has an
interest in Wikipedia and analytics." <analytics(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hey all,
I’m glad to announce that the Wikimedia Research team’s goals
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Research/Goals#January_-_March_201…>
for
the next quarter (January - March 2016) are up on wiki.
The Research and Data
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Research#Research_and_Data> team
will continue to work with our volunteers and collaborators on revision
scoring as a service <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/R:Revscoring> adding
support for 5 new languages and prototyping new models (including an edit
type classifier
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Automated_classification_of_edit_t…>).
We will also continue to iterate on the design of article creation
recommendations
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Increasing_article_coverage>,
running a dedicated campaign in coordination with existing editathons to
improve the quality of these recommendations. Finally, we will extend a
research project we started in November aimed at understanding the behavior
of Wikipedia readers
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Characterizing_Wikipedia_Reader_Be…>
, by combining qualitative survey data with behavioral analysis from our
HTTP request logs.
The Design Research
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Research#Design_Research> team
will conduct an in-depth study of user needs (particularly readers) on the
ground in February. We will continue to work with other Wikimedia
Engineering teams throughout the quarter to ensure the adoption of
human-centered design principles and pragmatic personas
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Personas_for_product_development> in our
product development cycle. We’re also excited to start a collaboration
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Publicly_available_online_learning…>
with
students at the University of Washington to understand what free online
information resources (including, but not limited to, Wikimedia projects)
students use.
I am also glad to report that two papers on link and article
recommendations (the result of a formal collaboration with a team at
Stanford) were accepted for presentation at WSDM '16 and WWW ’16 (preprints
will be made available shortly). An overview on revision scoring as a
service
<http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/11/30/artificial-intelligence-x-ray-specs/> was
published a few weeks ago on the Wikimedia blog, and got some good media
coverage
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Revision_scoring_as_a_service/Media>
.
We're constantly looking for contributors and as usual we welcome feedback
on these projects via the corresponding talk pages on Meta. You can contact
us for any question on IRC via the #wikimedia-research channel and follow
@WikiResearch <https://twitter.com/WikiResearch> on Twitter for the latest
Wikipedia and Wikimedia research updates hot off the press.
Wishing you all happy holidays,
Dario and Abbey on behalf of the team

Hi all,
Update on Wikipedia 15 events:
* WMF is planning an event on Friday, January 15.
* The community event will very likely be on Saturday, January 16. The
current thinking goes something like this:
12:15 - 1 PM: optional potluck lunch and introductions
1 PM - 2 PM: lightning talks, possibly synced with Wikimedia New York City
and Wikimedia UK.
2 PM - 4 PM: longer talks
4 PM - 4:30 PM: discussion of planning of future west coast activities
4:30 - 5 PM: video off; local discussions and socializing.
The situation is still fluid, but please do mark your calendars for the
afternoon of Saturday, January 16.
Those of us in Seattle will meet at the University of Washington in
Communications 126. I believe that those in SF will meet in the Wikimedia
Foundation offices. Portland and Vancouver are still TBD.
Regards,
Pine
Nice.
Sorry that I could not attend. I would have enjoyed these opportunities to see these films

6:30 pm Reception
7:30 pm Interactive Film Program
at the
Internet Archive
300 Funston Ave.
San Francisco, CA 94118
Get tickets here!
As usual, the audience creates the soundtrack — you’ll
be asked to identify places and events, share your thoughts,
and create an unruly interactive symphony of speculation
about the city we’ve lost and the city we’d like to live
in.
The film begins at 7:30 pm and is preceded by an informal
reception that begins at 6:30 pm. Light concessions will
be available for purchase. Although capacity is limited,
no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
Home Movie Day–A Celebration of Amateur Films and
Filmmaking
December 12
Do you have a much loved home movie sitting in the back of
your closet? Something you would love to screen but don’t
have the means to project anymore? Then Home Movie Day is
for you. The Internet Archive will be hosting Home Movie
Day for the San Francisco Bay Area on Saturday, December
12, 2015 starting at 3 p.m. The event is free and open
to the public.
Get tickets here!
Home Movie Day provides an opportunity for individuals and
families to see and share their own home movies with an
audience from their own community, and to see their
neighbors’ in turn. It’s a chance to discover why these
films are important and learn how best to care for them. We
will have the film projectors, you are encouraged to bring
your own home movies on 8mm, 16mm, or Super 8 to project on
our big screen.

and future. By supporting the Internet Archive, you are
