Hi, MediaWiki Group San Francisco is continuing its process to get
officially recognized:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Groups/Proposals/San_Francisco
I was wondering about communication channels, and whether it would be
fine to use this list. I don't expect much MediaWiki Group related
traffic anyway. Note that only topics specific to MediaWiki in SF Bay
Area would be acceptable. For the rest there is a bunch of MediaWiki
lists out there.
What do you think?

> In the past, I have informally asked Chapter Committee members about the possibility of a chapter like this. I was told with no equivocation that chapters which officially spanned multiple municipalities were forbidden, and that we could have a Wikimedia Oregon, Washington, or California only because we would have to pick a state in which to become officially incorporated in and be responsible for.
I have to say, this is the kind of nonsense that has personally caused me to reduce my participation in Wikipedia and gives the organization an unfriendly reputation on the Net and discourages new members.
Why on earth should there be arbitrary and restrictive rules about the geographical composition of local chapters of an informal volunteer organization? There are no legal or financial stakes, the issue of "municipalities" is an irrelevant triviality, and it just serves to annoy people.

Hello!
I'm a Bay Area Wikipedian and volunteer with the Oakland Wiki <
oaklandwiki.org>, a hyperlocal and volunteer-run wiki modeled after the
Davis Wiki <daviswiki.org>. My fellow volunteers and I are starting a
weekly history research meetup at the Oakland History Room in the main
branch of the Oakland Public Library, and you're all invited! (
The Oakland History Room, by the way, is a historian's treasure trove for
anything related to Oakland's history.)
I would love for this event to have the dual purpose of adding
well-researched content on local history to both Wikipedia and the Oakland
Wiki. Please spread the word far and wide!
*
Below is a copypaste of my general announcement.
Cheers!
Vicky
Dear Oakland history buffs and other historico-curious people,
Come hang in the Oakland History Room (quietly...shhh) with your fellow
local history nuts as we research and add interesting and insightful
historical content to the Oakland Wiki. The Oakland Wiki, a public wiki
based on the wildly popular Davis Wiki, is a community-created effort that
aims to compile into one place everything and anything about our unique and
fascinating city. Come be a part of this historic event and help write the
story of Oakland!
WHERE/WHEN: Sundays, starting January 13th, 2013
12-1p: Meet-n-greet and intro to editing at Brown Couch Cafe (340 14th St.)
1-5p: Quiet research session at the Oakland History Room (2nd floor of main
branch of the Oakland Public Library, 14th and Oak St.). Oakland Wiki
volunteers will be available at this time to show you how to edit the wiki.
BRING: Your curiosity, and a computer and/or note-taking materials. Some
paper and pencils will be provided.
QUESTIONS?
