Hi all!
A quick reminder our monthly WikiSalon takes place this Thursday April 9th at 6.30pm at The Fold. (3359 26th St). [Please register](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:Bay_Area_Meetup_April_2026) so we have an accurate headcount for food!
Alongside pizza, cake, and good company, we will have two lightning talks:
- Taking Pictures for the Commons, highlighting the work of volunteer photographers;
- Local Pages: a dedicated search engine for the Bay Area, presenting a tool to support our work in creating and maintaining local pages.
Feel free also to take the mic for up to 5 minutes to share what you have been nerding about and working on this month.
At our [March WikiSalon](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1JpBX6XDR-bD4ymvcqwzp4PLK…, we heard from Pi.1415926535 about Commons Categories, which led DynamicWebPaige to make [a tool helping to add categories to orphan pictures](https://bit.ly/wikicommons-category-suggester). Dreamyshade shared her notes about improving reliability, and great discussions were had.
See you Thursday!

Hi all,
[Wikiportraits](https://wikiportaits.org) has reached out in search of a volunteer photographer for this Saturday 3/14 afternoon at the movie festival [Cinequest](https://www.cinequest.org/) in San Jose. This is the[list of portraits](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x_5qXGDRZV-caWznxKzhnNlPKgbQ… they are hoping to add to Wikipedia. A Wikimedian had to cancel, which is why this is a last minute ask.
Volunteers get a press pass. We can also cover travel costs (within reason). Volunteer would need to bring their camera (although I should be able to lend one if your own is unavailable). No previous experience of uploading on Commons necessary.
Email bayareawikipedians(a)proton.me and we'll put you in touch.
Cheers,

Hi Atul,
I'm not sure if I replied to your email, I thought I did, but I don't see
my reply anywhere. Maybe it got lost in the proton.me versus my personal
account
Anyways, you're more than welcome to give a 3 minute talk at the open mic,
we'll be having open signups for that the night of the event.
However, if you have a more developed idea and would like to give a more
substantial talk (5-10 minutes, I know that's perhaps a questionable use of
the word "substantial"), I want to personally invite you to do so! Just
send us your slides (if you plan on having any) before around 5 PM Friday.
Then just make yourself known to myself or any of the volunteers and we'll
get you on stage when the time comes.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Cheers,
-Travis

Hi folks,
In case you hadn't heard, or forgot, BAWUG is hosting Wikigamejam SF (
https://wikigamejam.org/sf-2026/) next weekend, *Friday Mar 13 - Sunday Mar
15*. We have the venue, we have the food, we have the sponsors (include a
grant from WMF) and speakers and we have the hackathon participants! But to
make this event go really well, *it would be awesome if some of you all
could sign up for volunteer slots.*
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d-NgsUZxt9UxdkNzNh7Pob2w-9bO-E4VjZl…
We're trying to build things that are fun, educational, or just plain
weird. And there are some ideas of how to build wikigames that escape from
the quiz/trivia mould (wikiracing is already being recognized by GamesRadar
as a full-fledged subgenre!). It's a full weekend, and there are many
opportunities to volunteer where you could also be a part of the hackathon,
including just speaking your mind for 1-3 minutes in the "Game Jam Open
Mic" on Friday night.
If you'd like to help, please *sign up in the spreadsheet above!* And if
you have ideas on how you could help beyond what's listed, I'd love to
discuss. Just email me back directly.
Thanks,
-Travis
