Hi,
8 people showed up to for this first event and we discussed our ideas and
plans for the future series of events. We agreed that while we want these
to have an informal interactive feel much of the time, we should start off
and mix in formal program with a speaker or a panel to gather interest. We
also want these programs to be inclusive and interesting to newcomers.
Topic ideas for the first event include ocean conservation, San Francisco
and its history, local edit-a-thon experiences and open-source
intelligence. Right now we're trying to look for speakers, so if you know
someone or have an exciting idea, please share at

We set a deadline of next week to make a decision on the details so stay
tuned for another announcement. We plan to have the event the last
Wednesday of the month.

Francisco!
We're using the name "WikiSalon," which has been used by groups in NYC and
Washington DC. There's a planning doc on Meta Wiki:

I have confirmation that we have a room at the Wikimedia Foundation this
Wednedsay evening at 6:00pm. The office is at 149 New Montgomery Street.
I'm not sure how late the front desk is open, so in case the security guard
leaves at 6:00, you might want to arrive a few minutes early; or if you
can't get in, feel free to text or call me at 503-383-9454.
George: Any way I can assist in getting to the office? I don't have a car,
but if a walking companion would make it easier I'd be happy to meet you
ahead of time.
J: No strong idea about scope or length of time; we just want to chat about
the idea of having a recurring monthly get-together, brainstorm ideas, and
hang out. Probably an hour or two.
Merrilee, Asaf, Neil: Glad to know you're interested! We'll definitely
report back to the list. I'm pretty sure we will be planning the first
meeting for a Wednesday in late April; if there are strong preferences,
please make them known!

bring Bassel in to the *Pwning Tomorrow: Today* event taking place there

Hi SF Wikimedians!
At previous events I've mentioned to a few of you that I'm working on an
idea to teach a "Wiki Law School" advanced editing workshop primarily for
people underrepresented among Wikipedia editors, which would be focused on
how to successfully make higher-impact potentially-disputed edits. I'll be
trying a first iteration of this on Tuesday March 22 as part of an intro +
advanced editing evening at my women-centered makerspace in Lower Potrero
Hill (

If you're interested in learning these kinds of editing skills, feel free
to come! It'll probably be less exciting if you're already an experienced
editor, but you can also just come by and work on articles if you like.

Regarding OSM US conference in Seattle this year, I'd like to encourage
those who would like to travel to the conference from SF, which I hope will
include one or more WMF staff, to think about traveling as a group. Group
travel and/or lodging may reduce the total costs for the group, which I
hope would make WMF budget managers and the TPS Grant program staff be more
likely to approve financial support for your visit.

now seems like a good time to start thinking about possible presentations.
Staff from the Wikimedia Foundation, and/or Wikimedia volunteers from
around the US outside of the Seattle area, may want to start thinking about
travel plans.
For Wikimedia volunteers outside of Cascadia Wikimedians territory, you
might consider applying for WMF Travel and Participation Support grants [1].
If you're inside of Cascadia Wikimedians territory and would like to attend
the conference, we may have funds in our budget that can support your

I am excited to announce that Seattle was chosen to host the OpenStreetMap
2016 State of the Map US Conference. The conference will take place July
23-25 on SeattleU's campus. We chose SeattleU for their low cost, proximity
to Seattle and access to public transit. The food trucks near by didn't
hurt either.
We are looking for help! Let us know if you want to help. Request for
presentation proposals should be coming fairly soon. Start thinking about
what you want to present or teach.
