Hi,
I've been working with colleagues at the San Francisco public library on a Pride editathon. June 11, 1-5 at the main branch. I've done my usual lame job of creating the meetup page, but for now put this on your calendars and please plan to come and help support! The library staff are super excited about library resources being used to improve Wikipedia and giving you all the low down on their collections. They also forward to developing a partnership with the local Wiki community and hope that this can be the first in a series.
We'll be adding articles that need improvement and creation that relate to SF LGBTQI etc people, places, events and organizations but please add your own!

Thank you!

Subject: May online meeting of US Wikimedians
To: "Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS)" <
wikimediaus-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi folks,
Please participate in this Doodle poll
<http://doodle.com/poll/2nd38gbhp6n4m672> to indicate your availability for
the May meeting of US Wikimedians. (Canadians are welcome to join if they
wish!)
An early version of the agenda is here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WALRUS/May_2016>. Some of these items will
be discussed in greater detail than others. You can add items to the
agenda, and if you do this then please sign your name by the added item.
The Zoom <http://www.zoom.us> meeting platform got a favorable reception
when we tried it last month, so we'll use it again. We'll aim to keep the
meeting to 40 minutes in length.
Thanks!

Hi folks,
We'll meet on Thursday, April 28 at 5 PM Pacific / 8 PM Eastern.
* We will try a meeting tool called Zoom instead of Google Hangouts. The
participant cap will be 50 people (: Please sign up for an account on
www.zoom.us and then take a look at
https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362033-Getting-Started-on-PC-a…
* We'll use the Zoom time limit of 40 minutes to encourage ourselves to be
efficient with time. With that goal in mind, here's our tentative agenda:
5:00-5:15: Introductions and reports from chapters and groups. We'll divide
the time evenly. Please plan to have 1 minute per group, and please prepare
your intro and report ahead of time. :) If there is extra time then we can
have Q&A and discussion.
5:15-5:20: Discussion of possible Wiki Loves Earth campaign in the United
States See http://wikilovesearth.org.
5:20-5:30: WikiConference USA 2016 planning. See

Hi folks,
In an effort to make scheduling easier for everyone, I set up an unofficial
public calendar for US Wikimedia events:
http://localendar.com/public/Wikimedia_US
Nice features:
* You can add events as you wish, which will appear on the public calendar
once an admin approves the posts. Feel free to add events from local
affiliates. Please note the location of each event *in the name of the
event*. If an event is online/virtual, you can say "online".
* You can click on an event, which will create a popup that will let you
export the event to your choice of calendar formats.
There's no obligation to post events here, but I hope that this tool will
be convenient for everyone. This is an experiment and comments are welcome.

Hello Bay Area Wiki People! I'm excited to announce a new series of
WikiSalons, which several of us have been cooking up. The last Wednesday
evening of every month,we'll gather wiki enthusiasts to collaborate,
mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. Sometimes we plan a formal
program, but not always. Some events will help orient those new to the wiki
world, others will speak more to experienced wiki editors.
Our first event is Wednesday, April 27 at 6pm, at the Wikimedia Foundation
offices in downtown SF.
We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event: one about
the first-ever high school Wikipedia Edi-a-thon (at least, as far as we
know :), and one about the experience of transgendered women at the San
Quentin (male) prison.
We'll also have time for informal conversation and working on
articles.Newcomers are encouraged to attend. Bring a friend! We will have
beverages and light snacks, provided by Wiki Strategies, Ben Creasy, and
Wayne Calhoon.
*Please note: You must register here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1cjLRrSTlEkGOPTQ-h6A0WvSFI4ZmIUl6jEHp_RYas-…>,
and bring a photo ID* that matches your registration name. The building
policy is strict on this point.
All the details are here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bay_Area_WikiSalon,_April_2016
We look forward to seeing you there -- and until then, happy editing!
-Pete (and fellow organizers Ben and Wayne)
p.s. Any help spreading the word is most welcome! I plan to post on various
sites and invite various groups; if you'd like to join in, check out this
list, and feel free to note any you are inviting:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Monthly_WikiSalon_in_San_Francisco#Announce…
Hi Ben, thanks for the suggestion. Zoom looks promising. I'm also looking
into Bluejeans because I think that WMF may already have a license for it.

Why not just plan to have more than 10 people potentially? There are better
videoconferencing solutions such as zoom.us.

Hi US Wikimedians,
If you're interested in joining the April 2016 meeting of the US Wikimedia
Consortium, please go here to indicate your scheduling availability:
http://doodle.com/poll/eawc29nn2cfy6age
The meeting will likely be between 30 and 60 minutes long.
We meet via Google Hangouts video. Please note that Google will
automatically limit attendance to the first 10 people to join the meeting.
If this becomes a problem then we can talk with WMF about alternate
solutions for video meetings.
Notes from the meeting will be published for everyone to view afterwards.
Notes from our previous meeting are at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WALRUS/March_2016 and
https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/walrus
Feel free to forward this email to anyone who might want to attend!

Hi,
8 people showed up to for this first event and we discussed our ideas and
plans for the future series of events. We agreed that while we want these
to have an informal interactive feel much of the time, we should start off
and mix in formal program with a speaker or a panel to gather interest. We
also want these programs to be inclusive and interesting to newcomers.
Topic ideas for the first event include ocean conservation, San Francisco
and its history, local edit-a-thon experiences and open-source
intelligence. Right now we're trying to look for speakers, so if you know
someone or have an exciting idea, please share at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Monthly_WikiSalon_in_San_Francisco.
We set a deadline of next week to make a decision on the details so stay
tuned for another announcement. We plan to have the event the last
Wednesday of the month.
