WMF will be conducting research in Ghana between April 22 to May 3. The
research focuses on movement organizers.
*Movement organizers* here mean those who organize activities, bring people
together and form communities to teach others how to meaningfully
contribute their knowledge to the Wikimedia projects and participate in the
larger movement (whether as readers, editors, or allies).
The group's contact persons were asked to give names of people who fit
specific descriptions and have served as organizers. We have submitted
about 14 names.
An email will be sent to those WMF choose.
Dumisane of Monitoring & Evaluation/Affcom made the team aware of the
different actors in the Ghanaian space. This list includes those who
organize for Wikimedia Ghana only. This is to avoid any overlap.
I'll keep you updated.
All questions are welcome.

Hi,
I currently volunteer as your Strategy Liason for the Wikimedia Movement
Strategy Process
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20>. In
this role I would play a vital role in bringing the perspective of our
community into global conversations about how we need to grow and change in
order to advance in our Wikimedia 2030
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CKFKyc7We4>direction.
*"In 2017
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Direction>,
our community set a bold direction: By 2030, Wikimedia will become the
essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who
shares our vision will be able to join us. From there, we began the first
steps toward deciding what structural changes within our movement were
required to get there. Since July 2018, working groups
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Working…>
have identified key guiding questions within nine thematic areas relevant
to the movement. Now it’s your turn to take them back to your organized
group or community, and share their feedback back at the global level. *
*Our first big milestone on the community conversation timeline is the 2019
Wikimedia Summit <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Summit_2019>,
which many of you will be attending in Berlin, Germany from March
29th-31st. We'll be discussing the questions the working groups have
defined around how to make our movement more future ready and take some
early steps toward answering them. For those in attendance, your
perspective is crucial, and we want to make sure you have had a chance to
gather initial thoughts from the organized groups you represent. *
*To kick-start these efforts, we are pleased to be able to release the
Scoping Documents
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Partici…>
from our 9 working groups. Each document outlines key questions under a
different theme that relate to structural challenges in the movement. These
documents are available in multiple languages so that as many people as
possible can have a voice in answering them."*
>From now till March 28th I would be soliciting your views on certain key
questions and any other view you have about the Wikimedia 2030 agenda.
Have any difficult getting some of the documents in this email please let
me know. Find additional material below.
Regards,
Justice.

Hello everyone,
It is a fact that for many African countries especially, a common
thing like a selfie with a national statue can be copyright infringement.
For some time now Wikimedia Ghana UG <https://wmghug.wordpress.com/>has
been learning what it needs to do to have Freedom of Panorama introduced in
Ghana.
Today we are happy to announce that following a session
<https://accra18.re-publica.com/en/session/freedom-panorama-why-free-knowled…>
on Freedom of Panorama with Douglas Scott of Wikipedia ZA at re:publica Accra
conference <https://accra18.re-publica.com/en>, we have put up a petition
on change.org for the President of Ghana to put his weight behind this.
Before you sign the petition you'll need to know this:
*Problem:*
Ghana's Copyright Act of 2003, Act 690 at the moment restricts Freedom of
Panorama.
Because of the restriction of Freedom of Panorama taking a photo or video,
or creating images or copies of monuments, buildings, sculptures and other
permanently public artwork including those belonging to the state could be
a crime.
*Our Request *
We are petitioning his excellency and our minister for the arts to have
Parliament revisit our Copyright Act of 2003, Act 690 and grant Freedom of
Panorama.
*About Fair Dealing In Ghana*
We have put a preamble to our FOP research as adviced by a lawyer here
<http://bit.ly/FOPPreamble> to explain the status quo in Ghana.
*Why the president?*
Though it is Ghana's Parliament that would amend the act, the lawyer and
the presidential staffer who is our liaison has recommended we channel this
through the presidency instead.
The Chief of Staff is ready to receive this on the president's behalf
Sign the petition here
<https://www.change.org/p/h-e-nana-akufo-addo-please-introduce-freedom-of-pa…>
.
And while you are there, if you have questions, suggestions, concerns, even
typos to report, I'll gladly handle them before we print it out for
delivery.
