Hello all. I mentioned earlier that the user group will be seeking
incorporation to become a non profit.
Drafting bylaws, considering leadership etc are all things that require
members’ input to be able to take the next step.
NB PLEASE WRITE YOUR NAME FOR 2017 MEMBERSHIP
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Ghana_User_Group_/_Members>
Secondly to start drafting our constitution/bylaws please participate in
creating them: Go here to start
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Ghana/Proposed_by-laws>.
We already have a bylaws document, by-laws by other groups, and a couple of
decisions the usergroup made earlier on that we can remix to what will suit
us.
Please forward this message to all persons you know as members whom you
haven't heard from in a while.

Subject: [African Wikimedians] Turkish Government Blocked Access to
Wikipedia

Greetings,
Today, a court sitting in Ankara banned access to Wikipedia. The reason for
the ban is not clear but a statement credited to Turkey's communications
ministry said " Wikipedia was attempting to run a smear campaign against
Turkey ". Well, its seems the ban was imposed following a failed attempt by
the government to control Wikipedia's contents.[1]
You may want to contribute to a proposed community's response to the ban. I
have provided a link to the draft below.

Hello all, you know we have been working with the GIMPA Law School on the
Wikipedia Education Program (WEP). Ours involves students receiving grades
for editing/creating Wikipedia articles. GIMPA WEP is being led by Justice
Okai-Allotey.
This has been/will be the journey (so far):
– The students were first trained to edit Wikipedia.
– Their tutor has now instructed them to draft a Wikipedia article for
which they’ll receive grades
– They’ll also upload the articles online for which they’ll receive grades
– We will pay them a visit and help them draft and upload. On this visit
the lead volunteer of the Wikipedia Club GIJ will come with us so he can
help and also learn about WEP. This visit will be funded by a grant to the
user group.
– Students will be graded by teacher and later we will collect information
and share with the WEP team our report.
Find the link to grant proposal and add your endorsements. Grants Proposal

Also if you have any feedback and comments just contact us.
Best Regards,
Justice Okai-Allotey.

Just a heads up,
Felix is no longer a wikimedia-gh mailing list admin. He opted out of being
an admin to the mailing list, and only as admin. He's still a part of the
mailing list..
If anyone wants to become admin, let us know, and I'll add you.
But, I'm still an admin, so happy to assist if any.
rex
Representatives to the meeting are to share what they learned also I am
supposed to coordinate a discussion about the 2030 strategy. Now I am aware
we have members all around the country.
I wish that at least one active editor from each region attends this
meeting. You can apply for your transportation costs to handled by a travel
grant (TPS).
We will hold it on a weekend so everyone can make it.
Please go here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Ghana_User_Group_/_Post-WMCon_17_…>
to register your interest. Please know that it will have to be a weekend.

Hello all, these are your 2030 theme-like statements you submitted after I
placed a call via the mailing list and our WhatsApp chat group.
*Physical spaces*
Paicy Debzie and Ebenezer Gasonoo say that as a user group, we should have
a physical space within which we operate. We should adopt the model of the
hubs that allow people to walk in, even if it’s just to make enquiries
about our community. The online based community is limited.
*Wikipedia Education Program*
Ato Ulzen Appiah says Wikipedia Education Program is our best to get
academic community to buy into Wikipedia and the efforts. WEP efforts
should be intensified.
*Wikipedia Zero*
Randy Baah says Wikipedia Zero should be extended to be on all networks.
*User Groups & Emerging communities*
Justice Alottey says WMF should strengthen user groups in emerging
communities in terms of logistics to undertake programs that can impact the
community and in turn Wikipedia as well.
He also added WMF should be much more interested in helping the emerging
communities where there’s a rise in internet penetration, get to the
standards of the well-established communities.

Hello all,
It has come to the attention of the Wikimedia Ghana user group that people
are still charging for the creation of articles after we issued our first
alert somewhere last year advising against this. As such we have decided to
embark on a full scale campaign through social media and channels we get by
engaging our community, partners and the public about not charging for
articles on Wikipedia.
A social media campaign has also been launched through the hashtag
#DontPay4WikipediaEdits which we entreat all members to engage with to help
create the awareness. We have been informed of a possible support on radio
tomorrow on the tech and social media trends segment of the #CitiCBS by our
colleague Sandister Tei.
Find below our official statement on why people should not pay for
Wikipedia Articles. Please do well to share widely so everyone know about
it and engage the hashtag as well.
Thank You.
Do not pay for a Wikipedia article
Wikipedia is a free and open knowledge based website and as such you do not
have to pay for an article to be created or edited for you.
There are rules governing how articles are created, the most important one
is “NOTABILITY”.
If a person, place, event, phenomenon, organisation or topic meets this
criteria, the next step is for a Wikipedia editor who has interest in that
section of editing to pick it up and volunteer to work on it since all
editors are of diverse interest. Moreover it's not a rule of thumb that
when you meet or something meets the notability rule that definitely has to
be picked up by an editor. Wikipedia editing is a voluntary work you don’t
have to pay for an article to be created for you, provided your notability
is traceable online and easily verifiable.
Please note that once an article is created it becomes subject to vetting
by other Wikipedia editors across the globe and based on its quality, an
article could be allowed to stay or be removed per Wikipedia guidelines.
Paying for an article doesn't guarantee it will stay on the wiki.
Spread the news.
