- *First ever gathering in the sub-Saharan African region will be held
in Cape Town, bringing together more than 700 people to discuss how to
improve the diversity of knowledge represented on Wikipedia and Wikimedia
sites*
- *Key participants include Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director
Katherine Maher, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, as well as notable thought
leaders from across the African continent and the world*
*Cape Town, South Africa - 31 May 2018:* Cape Town has won the bid to host
the 14th annual Wikimania 2018 conference, the annual gathering of
volunteers from around the world to celebrate Wikipedia and the Wikimedia
projects, from 18-22 of July. More than 700 volunteers from around the
world will come together to discuss and share ideas around the future of
Wikipedia and free knowledge globally.
Attendees will be made up of members of the global Wikimedia movement,
including those who volunteer their time to edit and improve Wikipedia
articles, create bots, or organise events and projects to draw more content
onto Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. Other open knowledge advocates
will also attend, along with local academics, teachers, heritage
specialists, and interested stakeholders.
Across more than 70 sessions, attendees will work to bring the conference
theme: Bridging knowledge gaps; the Ubuntu way forward, to life by ensuring
that some of the fundamental principles of the Wikimedia movement are
contextualised within the rapidly evolving internet narrative.
Confirmed speakers include internet geographist Dr. Martin Dittus
<https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/martin-dittus/>, who will be speaking on
economic development, labour, power, participation, and representation. Joy
Buolamwini <https://www.media.mit.edu/people/joyab/overview/>, a noted
female Artificial Intelligence expert fighting to remove bias in machine
learning, and Prof. Sean Jacobs
<https://www.newschool.edu/public-engagement/milano-school-faculty/?id=4e7a-…>
whose focus areas includes trends in digital culture are also invited
thought leaders at the conference.
“Our vision is a world in which every single person can freely share in the
sum of all knowledge. We believe that knowledge belongs to everyone, and
that people from diverse backgrounds should be empowered to participate in
the collaborative creation of knowledge,” said Katherine Maher, Executive
Director, Wikimedia Foundation.
Wikimedia is also looking to expand its non-Western topics, where there is
still not enough locally relevant content
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Sources/Ne…>
about Africa, particularly that which is gathered from African
perspectives or shared in African languages. The same could be said for
indigenous knowledge and local knowledge from many places outside the
Global North, much of which is still missing. South Africa has active
Afrikaans <https://af.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuisblad> and isiXhosa
<https://xh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iphepha_Elingundoqo> Wikipedia editions, but
most of the other indigenous languages from the continent are either
missing or do not have regular contributions
<http://www.greenman.co.za/blog/?p=2082> on Wikipedia.
Challenges with software localisation, the structure of data, and even the
forms of knowledge that Wikimedia has defined as “verifiable” (text-based,
rather than oral, for example) are some of the issues the movement is
grappling with as it moves actively towards incorporating more diverse
kinds of knowledge within Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects.
This year’s Wikimania conference will take place at the Southern Sun, Cape
Sun Hotel. Wikimania 2018 is co-organised by Wikimedia South Africa
<http://wikimedia.org.za/wiki/Main_Page>, the local Wikimedia affiliate
organisation of South Africa, and the Wikimedia Foundation
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Home>, the non-profit that supports
the Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects.
Wikipedia is a collaborative collection of knowledge that is open for
anyone to edit. Today Wikipedia is available in more than 45 million across
nearly 300 languages, and is read more than 15 billion times every month.
Volunteer editors from around the world, or Wikipedians, come together to
write and update Wikipedia articles in real time, collaborating to ensure
that information is neutral and based in reliable sources. Each month, more
than 200,000 people edit Wikipedia.
The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organisation that supports
Wikipedia, the Wikimedia free knowledge projects, and its mission of free
knowledge for every single person.

free knowledge movement. Wikimedia ZA is the local host of Wikimania 2018.
*About Wikimania*
Wikimania is an annual conference centered on the Wikimedia projects
(Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge websites) and the

aspects which relate to these topics. Wikimania 2018 marks the 14th year of
the conference.
*About Wikipedia*
Wikipedia is the world’s free knowledge resource. It is a collaborative
creation that has been added to and edited by millions of people from

46 million articles, and viewed more than 15 billion times every month. It
is the largest, collaborative collection of free knowledge in human
history, and today its content is contributed and edited by a community of
more than 200,000 volunteer editors each month.

Hello guys,
Asaf Bartov, the Senior Program Officer, Emerging Wikimedia Communities,
Wikimedia Foundation will be visiting Ghana from the 18th – 23rd May 2018.
We have a set of events around his visit from Friday 18 – Tuesday 22 May
2018.
He’ll be handling Wikimedia Ghana User Group and OFWA but the announcements
here apply to Wikimedia Ghana User Group members. The events include
Wikidata editing, licenses, capacity building and a group dinner.
Per his request which we also agree with, the meetings and training's are
restricted to active members only.
Active here means regular editors and Members here means – of course, you
have to be a registered member of the user group.
Anyone whether in Accra or elsewhere can attend. If you live outside, we
can arrange for accommodation from Friday to Sunday and flights for you but
it will be subject to Asaf’s approval.
You book it yourself, and you’ll get reimbursed upon submission of a
receipt.
Regarding food, the event will provide two tea breaks and lunch. The event
ends at 5 pm or 6 pm, so dinner will not be provided, nor funded.
To participate register here; https://goo.gl/forms/QKBtJz82JTcC7rkk2.
Best,

FYI.
Hello,
Many of you may have been receiving emails in the last 24 hours warning you
of "Multiple failed attempts to log in" with your account. I wanted to let
you know that the Wikimedia Foundation's Security team is aware of the
situation, and working with others in the organization on steps to decrease
the success of attacks like these.
The exact source is not yet known, but it is not originating from our
systems. That means it is an external effort to gain unauthorized access to
random accounts. These types of efforts are increasingly common for
websites of our reach. A vast majority of these attempts have been
unsuccessful, and we are reaching out personally to the small number of
accounts which we believe have been compromised.
While we are constantly looking at improvements to our security systems and
processes to offset the impact of malicious efforts such as these, the best
method of prevention continues to be the steps each of you take to
safeguard your accounts. Because of this, we have taken steps in the past
to support things like stronger password requirements,[1] and we continue
to encourage everyone to take some routine steps to maintain a secure
computer and account. That includes regularly changing your passwords,[2]
actively running antivirus software on your systems, and keeping your
system software up to date.
My team will continue to investigate this incident, and report back if we
notice any concerning changes. If you have any questions, please contact
the Support and Safety team (susa{{(a)}}wikimedia.org).
John Bennett
Director of Security, Wikimedia Foundation
Hi everyone,
I'm announcing a proposal I posted about improving Wikipedia content related to corruption, and an opportunity to experiment with direct mentorship of less experience Wikipedia editors.
Please see the proposal here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Masssly/Wikimedia_Ghan…
Feel free to askquestions. Feedback and comments are welcome.
Thanks
