(e.g. textbooks?). Apply to attend OpenCon 2017

Subject: Update on the L2K ahead of Wikimania
To: wiki-indaba-17-participants(a)googlegroups.com, Mailing list for African
Wikimedians <african-wikimedians(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear fellow Wikimedians,
It has been a remarkable six months since WikiIndaba, and three months
since the Wikimedia Conference. I am so excited by what the African
community has accomplished during this period, and what we have yet to
achieve!
I am so grateful for the L2K and how it has inspired the movement and
Foundation. We have referred back to it on so many occasions through the
global strategy process. And of course, it inspired the Latin American
community with their own post-Iberoconf letter, the Carta de Buenos Aires
[1].
In order to properly recognize the L2K, and the importance of the African
community, I would like to acknowledge both it and the Carta with a formal
response while we are at Wikimania. The response will be timed to accompany
the presentation that I intend to give along with Christophe Henner, our
Wikimedia Foundation Board Chair.
In the meantime, I know that you have been in close coordination with Jack
and other Foundation colleagues through the office hours and other
collaborations. Internally within the Foundation, the themes of the L2K
have been present in our conversations around strategy, program, and
community planning.
I am so grateful for your voice, and the representation of Africa in the
community, and your continued work on behalf of our movement.
Yours,
Katherine

Hi everyone,
As many are already aware, the Africa Open Data conference is around the corner. I’m happy to mention that Adele Vrana from the Foundation will be in attendance, and will be speaking on the panel as well.
I’m thinking the usergroup should arrange to sit down and have a chat with Adele perhaps on the last day of the conference. I don’t have an agenda in mind but I’m sure others can chip in with interesting ideas.
Welcome in advance Adele :-)

Dear all
We would like to inform you that the Wiki Loves Africa 2017 grant request
has been accepted !
Yeah !
La demande de subvention pour WLAf 2017 a été acceptée
THE THEME
*People at Work*
*Competition scope:* The theme calls for photographs, videos and audio
files that document all manner of occupations undertake across the
continent - formal and informal, contemporary and ancient,
business-oriented and creative. There will be a special prize that will be
concentrated on visually capturing women working, and another that
illustrates rare, fading or threatened traditional craft, style or way of
working.
LE THEME
Les gens au travail (traduction à préciser)
Il y aura un prix spécial pour l'illustration des femmes au travail. Et un
spécial pour les métiers menacés d'extinction.
WHEN
The contest will run October-November
There will be a dedicated drive after the event to better use and integrate
pictures
QUAND
Le concours se déroulera en Octobre et Novembre
Il y aura aussi un effort particulier après le concours pour mieux intégrer
et réutiliser les photos
*************
A few things to note though...
1. This year, per request from WMF, only 13 countries will be allowed to
request funding to participate with local events. That list covers any
country which has already participated to WLAf at least once.
Moreover, amongst those 13 countries, some will be covered by the WLAf
Project Grant in the same way than in 2014-2015-2016, whilst some will have
to request a Rapid Grant to WMF.
This is the list of countries who should ask a Rapid Grant if they want to
join in
* 1. Egypt 2. Tunisia 3. Cameroon 4. Nigeria 5. Ghana 6. Côte d’Ivoire 7.
Algeria 8. South Africa *
*Of course, we would support those asking for the rapid grant as needed.
The main benefit is... that local budget can potentially increase given
that max budget for a Rapid Grant is 2000 dollars. *
*We will reach out to all groups individually anyway to discuss this. *
This is the list of countries who should follow the same process than last
year if they want to join in
* 1. Ethiopia 2. Uganda 3. Tanzania 4. Malawi 5. Zimbabwe 2. The contest is
moving towards incorporating more volunteer positions. So if you want to
get involved in organizing the contest at the global level, please get in
touch with us asap so that we can integrate you from the start in the whole
organization and planning. Project will start with evaluation planning, in
consultation with and supported by WMF, to improve documentation and
reporting of impact. We will probably launch an easy going group list to
better coordinate this and involve people. So please, if you want to be
part of it... jump in (<evil look>we will contact some of you privately
anyway. The african developer group is on target for example</evil look> *
I hope this is clear. Contact me if not.
* Contactez moi si ce qui est expliqué ci dessus n'est pas clair. *

The group will be resuming its monthly ( or even weekly) meetings soon.
Hopefully, the others regions will be joining us in the activities.
Last year, the workshops were dedicated to recruiting Wikipedia editors.
This year we are dedicating it to content / knowledge gaps – issues which
haven't been properly covered on the wikis. In the process, if we recruit
new editors, that will be a plus.
Every now and then I post edit suggestions in the mailing list and Whatsapp
group. It is an extension of that but this time, we are having events to
fix these articles.
You can check out the little info I have put out. Also, help select our
hashtag: #NoGapProject / #KnowGapProject / #TheKnowProject
#TheGapProject has already been taken. I advise we avoid it.

Thank you to all who made it to the event.
For the influencers who attended, kindly let me have your receipts. You can
photograph it from a top angle and send it.
If you didn't use all the funds, please make it a point to contact me so it
can be returned to Wikimedia.
Influencers should also draw up a plan for their first events and let me
have it by Sunday. Check the project goals and project plan here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Wikimedia_Ghana_User_G…>.
You can send it to me in an email text.
Everyone should also confirm if you have arrived safely. Please confirm
again.
