Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photo contest for monuments,
organized by Wikimedia Communities across the world around September each
year. This year Ghana joins the world to organize the contest that seeks to
preserve Cultural Heritage through pictures, which is an important part of
the knowledge Wikipedia collects and disseminates.
Everybody can contribute images as well as write articles. An image is
worth a thousand words and this is universal irrespective of where you are
geo-located. This is an opportunity for indigenes, local enthusiasts,
tourists, etc. to (re)discover the cultural, historical, or scientific
significance of these monuments in their communities or country.
This year, the contest spans* 1st - 30th September, 2016*. There will be a
series of activities, including* individual uploading to the contest *(spanning
the duration of the campaign), *three (3) photo-expeditions* and* 2 upload
session/edit-a-thon* scheduled for *3rd, 10th, 17th, 21st & 24th*. The
three photo-expeditions will cover the regions that has most of their
monuments uncovered and the upload/edit-a-thons session will afford many
the opportunity to upload the pictures taken while we try to put articles
or improve already existing articles about the various scenery visited.
Below is the schedule;
- *Photo-expedition to the Greater Accra Region (3rd)*
- *Photo-expedition to the Western Region (10th)*
- *Photo-expedition to the Ashanti Region (17th)*
- *Edit-a-thon
(21st)*
- *Upload Session
(24th)*
Will send further arrangements plans for each activity by the weekend and
please be informed that space is limited for each trip so it will be on a
first come first serve basis.

Hello
While the international community, the African community and even
individually led projects are ongoing please also consider that the group
is embarking on a second election project concerning our upcoming elections
in December.
That is what I suggest should be our main focus now. We need to make sure
that the articles or pages concerning our elections are in good shape and
well catalogued to be a good point of reference for people looking for
information.
I will be creating a meta page shortly where interested persons can join
this general editathon which will run till January probably.
Regards,

The internet ecosystem in Nigeria isn’t much unlike that of Ghana. Some here might find this New Readers from Nigeria report interesting.
Excerpt
“As a brand, Wikipedia is not widely recognized or understood. People are Wikipedia readers without realizing it.
Brand: Few respondents recognized the Wikipedia visual brand (the name was more widely known), or could accurately describe what Wikipedia was.
Mission: Other than expert respondents, virtually no one seemed aware of Wikipedia’s mission or that the larger Wikimedia movement.
Content: Only a few respondents understood how content creation and editing worked. Most either had never considered the topic, or thought that editing was done by those paid or otherwise assigned to do so (e.g. Wikipedia staff or foreign students working on assignments). “
