I writing to you by recoomendation of Andre Klapper https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:AKlapper_(WMF) about the issue, and he said that I should ask The Language Engineering team about the issue I wrote about.
I am writing as a bureaucrat of mk.wiki on the suggestion of other active editors and admins who feel that there is one issue that needs addressing on our wiki. Namely, that is the italics, whenever we use them. Unicode automatically shows the East Slavic italics, where several letters are different than in our own (and Serbian) alphabet. See the heading Differences from other Cyrillic alphabets https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_Cyrillic_alphabet#Differences_from_other_Cyrillic_alphabets in the Serbian alphabet article (the image to the right shows the differences.. The correct ones for Macedonian and Serbian are i in the rightmost, yellow column). Same applies to Macedonian, i.e. it is the same letters that are different. In the text further near the end of the section, it mentions OpenType and things I don't udnerstand.
Our question, as a wiki-community is: is it possible to have something done on our wiki (something to be installed) or elsewhere, so that we will get the proper letters? I know that some free fonts support this, but I am not sure which. I am sure the Serbians will also be interested to implement this on their wiki (although their case is somewhat more complicated by the fact they use dual script on all pages).
We, as a community, use different operating systems and browsers, but everyone sees the Russian-Bulgarian italics, not the Macedonian/Serbian ones.
Below I have a screenshot of a test I just made for each of the letters. Here is again the table of differences https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Serbian_Cyrillic_Italic.svg. The ones we want are in the rightmost (yellow) column. We are asking if it is possible for all italics to be displayed this way on the wiki. This will need some special intervention (I assume) as currently we don't have them, but the Russo-Bulgarian in stead. (See screenshot below)
This applies to every OS and browser, because it is a standard by Unicode that hasn't been modified yet to introduce our letters, and so it is, by definition, impossible for us to get Maced./Serb. italics without tweaks in the wiki. Our question is: are those tweaks possible, so our italics will look like that in the yellow column.
I hope there may be a solution for our community.

Testcases are generally welcome. A testcase to compare to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_Cyrillic_alphabet#Differences_from_oth... can be found at https://mk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D0%B0%D0%B7%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE%D1%...

Hoi, The obvious solution is in using fonts that work properly for a language as it is possible to use a font based on the language code used for a text (standard MediaWiki functionality).
It is therefore only a matter of using the right font and almost everything will be good.
The obvious question is, is there a freely licensed font that can be used. Thanks, GerardM

Hello.
Thanks for looking into the matter. We will now contact the leading font designer in Macedonia, and will consult him about a free font that is suitable visually, i.e.that does not look that different from the present italics.
By the way, can we make only the italics use this font, or is it a technical necessity that it must affect all text on the wiki?
Thanks a lot again Bojan

Hoi, You can use an existing freely licensed font as a base and only change the characters that need to differ. This is a better approach as it allows for the use of the font in other circumstances as well. Thanks, GerardM

That would be our last resort. More likely, we'll find suitable uniform ones.
May I ask if it will be possible to display them everywhere when using Macedonian as interface language, or just on our wiki?
Cheers, Bojan

That will be great, if the system (on any wiki) knows to use that font whenever the alphabet is being used in its Italic form.
Once we get hold of the most suitable font, I'll attach it here, together with any technical specifications the typographer may include (I also think he'll be able to answer any questions himself). Then we hope that you'll take matters in your expert hands, and/or guide us as to what we need to submit where.

ULS fonts are applied on any MediaWiki wiki which uses ULS, but settings may differ on the exact circumstances.

Please remember that in addition of technical details, the copyright/licensing is also important for us. A font with restrictive terms would not be distributed by Wikimedia (even if it had an explicit grant).
Is the issue Wikipedia-only or does it affecet every page/every software? If its effect is beyond Wikipedia, then it'd probably be better to ask producers for different OS to integrate a suitable font and ask different browsers provider to pick the font if the webpage specify its content is in Macedonian. 2016/01/29 23:29 "Bojan Jankuloski" bojan.jankuloski@gmail.com:

Hello all,
You will recall that we wanted to change the italics on mk.wiki to show proper Macedonian letters. We found a suitable free font and then, our community voted unanimously for the proposed change https://mk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%B8%D1%98%D0%B0:%D0%A1%D0%B5%D0%BB%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B0_%D1%87%D0%B5%D1%88%D0%BC%D0%B0#.D0.9D.D0.BE.D0.B2.D0.B8_.D0.B7.D0.B0.D0.BA.D0.BE.D1.81.D0.B5.D0.BD.D0.B8_.D0.B1.D1.83.D0.BA.D0.B2.D0.B8. The font is *Skola Serif Condensed Italic*, whose free status was confirmed by the author himself, Lasko Džurovski. The available here http://www.mio.gov.mk/?q=node/2182 and in other places, and here is the proposed look https://mk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BA%D0%B0:%D0%98%D0%B7%D0%B3%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%B4_%D0%BD%D0%B0_%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8_%D0%B7%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%BE%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8_%D0%B1%D1%83%D0%BA%D0%B2%D0%B8.jpg, compared to the current one. I did notice that when I tried to use it in Microsoft Word, it did not show properly, but less legible and rather ugly. I hope that this will not happen on the wiki.
Since none of us know about the process of getting the font installed, our community would like to ask you to do it for us, if possible. We are at your disposal for any questions and things that we can assist with on our behalf. As discussed before, we would like the font to apply only when italics are used, and across all wikis, if that isn't too complicated.
Thank you a lot from myself and our community,
Bojan Jankuloski

Is the issue Wikipedia-only or does it affecet every page/every software? If its effect is beyond Wikipedia, then it'd probably be better to ask producers for different OS to integrate a suitable font and ask different browsers provider to pick the font if the webpage specify its content is in Macedonian. 2016/01/29 23:29 "Bojan Jankuloski" bojan.jankuloski@gmail.com:
That will be great, if the system (on any wiki) knows to use that font
whenever the alphabet is being used in its Italic form.
Once we get hold of the most suitable font, I'll attach it here, together with any technical specifications the typographer may include (I also think he'll be able to answer any questions himself). Then we hope that you'll take matters in your expert hands, and/or guide us as to what we need to submit where.
Thanks a lot! Bojan

May I ask if it will be possible to display them everywhere when using Macedonian as interface language, or just on our wiki?
ULS fonts are applied on any MediaWiki wiki which uses ULS, but settings may differ on the exact circumstances.

The font is *Skola Serif Condensed Italic*, whose free status was confirmed by the author himself, Lasko Džurovski.
I've downloaded the font at http://www.mio.gov.mk/?q=download/SKOLA_font_family.zip and the file doesn't contain any license statement.
Please tell the author to include an OFL statement in the download page or files: http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=OFL_web&...

Hello guys,
Is it ok if the font is free for use, but not open-source? Is it acceptable?
Cheers, Bojan
