Dear translators.
For those of you who are using Betawiki, please update your bookmarks. Betawiki is on http://translatewiki.net now and it's performance has improved dramatically.
Betawiki can be used to translate all core messages of MediaWiki (~1900) and the messages of about 85 extensions for MediaWiki (~1100) without requiring any technical knowledge. Developers commit the work of the translators to MediaWiki so it is available in the product.
In October 2007 we have committed changes to 71 languages from Betawiki. We expect this number to grow to over 100 before Q2-2007.
Please check http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Localisation_statistics and try to get translators to Betawiki for those languages with poor support in MediaWiki.
You continuing support for MediaWiki localisation in Betawiki (http://translatewiki.net) is highly appreciated.
Cheers!
Siebrand
P.s. I would appreciate it of you forwarded this mail in some form to any appropriate mailing list. _______________________________________________ Translators-l mailing list Translators-l@lists.wikimedia.org http://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/translators-l
Cool. I haven't tried Betawiki yet, but signed up today.
I was reading this: http://translatewiki.net/wiki/User_talk:Nike#section-3699a5e2e7eccb996bd8d87...
Where Nike writes: "As far as I know there is no active message documentation project. There's been some in the past, but nothing comprehensive. Best place to ask about context is probably on irc at #mediawiki-i18n or #mediawiki."
Does anyone know about a list of the most often asked about contexts? Then I don't have to go on IRC and ask if "talkpagelinktext" is supposed to be a noun or a verb. There's quite a lot of these kinds of messages where it is unclear if they are supposed to be nouns or verbs (given all those zero-derivation verbs in English)...
Thanks! .s
Another question related with context. Are there guidelines for developers regarding system message creation? Some messages seem really silly to me. Take for instance "whitelistedittext". The English is written as "You have to $1 to edit pages." What is $1? Will it seriously ever be anything other than "login"? If so then I need to use the grammar function, but if not I can just translate it without the variable. Yes? No?

This is a link with the caption of the message "loginreqlink", which is "login". It should be a parameter since this is an unusual link, and the parameter should be preserved.
You are welcome to write here or in #mediawiki-i18n about such concerns.
