I confess I know only the barest of details regarding the various idioms spoken along the Dutch/German border. But I have always thought that the people that live either side of that border understood each other far better than say a speaker of "hollands" and say "twents" of "gelders-overijssels". I therefore agree that political borders, often nothing more than quirks of history, cannot be viewed as representing linguistic borders. That's my two bob's worth.

Is there anybody who happens to participate in both communities? If so,
they might be best placed to explain the situation.

Hi all,
I would like to announce that 4 new Wikipedias have just been created
by Tim Starling (thanks!)
They are:
http://pam.wikipedia.org/ Kapampangan Wikipedia
http://ceb.wikipedia.org/ Cebuano Wikipedia
http://sco.wikipedia.org/ Scots Wikipedia
http://fiu-vro.wikipedia.org/ Võro Wikipedia
I also hope that in the near future we may add additional Philippines
languages to our repertoire (many have millions of speakers, for
example Illocano, Bicolano, Hilgaynon, Samaran, Pangasinan...)
Cheers
Mark
Guys,
How are chapters of the Wikimedia Foundation created?
I hope we Cebuanos could organize one after we have
made our Wikipedia active.

Today for the first time I read a request on OpenSource terminology
(Firebird and Opera) on the Italian translator's list. Really it has
been quite a long time now that I was considering to create these
glossaries within wiktionary since I believe they will become
fundamental during the following years. More and more people work with
OpenSource software and so it is only a question of time when people
will start to look for this terminology.
Do we have people within our group who already have such glossaries or
have contacts to the right people?
I believe it is time to talk about such things - I am posting this to
the wikipedia-l as well, as it is likely that contributors of wikipedia
have the right contacts. Please from now on use the wiktionary-l for
this disucssion to avoid cross postings or write me by private mail.
Thank you!!
Ciao, Sabine

hello world,
I want to start new language (Samogitian) in wikipedia. Where are
about 0.5 million samogitians in west Lithuania and about another 0.5
million understand. The 3 letter language code for Samogitian could be
"smg" so the URL should be http://smg.wikipedia.org. I am a native
speaker and know the requirement for samogitian in web. It would be
good start for computerisation this language :-D

On behalf of my fellow Kapampangans, I wish to thank the people from Wikimedia, and others who have lent their support, for making the Kapampangan Wikipedia a reality . This is an important milestone for our language, in the continuing quest to revitalize it and make it responsive to the needs of the 21st century. Its fortuitous appearance in the wake of the re-introduction of the language to schools in the Kapampangan capital means that schoolchildren, who are increasingly familiar with the Internet, will have a reliable reference in the native tongue easily accessible to them.
A Wikipedia in our beloved mother tongue is a precious and beautiful thing, and we will do our best to take care of it.
Thank you too, for giving our Cebuano brothers their Wikipedia. They deserve it richly. Congratulations to them. Congratulations, too, to our friends who speak Scots and Võro, who now also have Wikipedias of their own. And I appreciate Mark's statement that the other major Philippine languages not yet represented so far should also have their own Wikipedias. That is something to look forward to.
I do not understand why some people say that language is a source of division. If you give people their own voice, in their own tongue (as opposed to suppressing it), then you are actually promoting world understanding. More power to Wikipedia for the great work that it is doing.

That's real good news. Thanks to Tim Starling and everyone else involved in preparing the new Wikipedias from me, too. And good luck to our new Cebuano, Kapampangan, Scots and Võro editors!
I believe all of these four Wikipedias will soon prove to be successful (even though they will probably grow at differnent speeds). The reason I'm sure of this that each of them had a number of people interested in contributing even before they were created. And that separates them from a lot of Wikipedias created in the past which are inactive now. Like Mark, I hope a lot more editions will follow. But I think we should always keep in mind that it takes a minimum number of commited people right from the start. Otherwise there is no point in creating a Wikipedia for a certain language, no matter how many people speak it. That's a lesson we had to learn and if we keep it in mind many more successful Wikipedias will follow.
